First Article Bonus - Trying to be the best

I've always liked hockey. I've found it to be a thrilling sport, one that I simply can't get enough of. Being born in Great Britain, I, Uhtred, son of Uhtred, grew up learning how to fight. And yet, despite my father trying to teach me the ways of Bebbanburg, I yearned to play the sport of the common man. Hockey.

Anybody can play sports, but playing sports on skates? On Ice? Impossible. I knew I was up for the challenge.

I had to be the center of attention, of course, which is what drew me, naturally, to the center position. The game starts, with a focus on faceoffs, and I wanted to be the reason my team got the puck. When my team needs a big goal, I want all of my teammates eyes flying, looking for me to come out of nowhere to snipe another goal. Because there is no doubt in my mind, that I want to be a leader on our team. I want to be the reason opponents fear facing us - my slapshots, my batting the puck out lacrosse style. I want the goalie to blink when I shoot it, worried I might decoy and pass, or float one in off my backhand.

I  tried being a defenceman, but it didn't work out well for me. I don't like going back and waiting for the action. I want to be the one driving the action. And same with being a goalie - I don't want to be the last line of defence, having 100 MPH slapshots sent into my blocker. I have a complete and total respect for my keeper, and I'll block a shot for him, but I want to be the one making that awesome slapshot.

Centers, I know, are typically passers. I mean, sure, I pass every now and then. But I practiced shooting into my net alone, thousands of times a day. So my skill has and always will be my shot. If I'm lucky enough to be drafted, it'll be my shot that gets me there. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to win though - I'll play on the damn penalty kill if I have to, if it means we can win a championship!

I grew up learning about advanced stats in hockey - so checking, fighting, these things don't come naturally to me. I developed a knack for handling the puck and being a breakout expert, I don't want to be stripped of the puck. I want to be a 200 foot player, poking the puck away, doing a give and go, and firing it in the back of the net. My hand slamming down like the ref, signalling a goal has been scored.

I grew up wanting to play hockey for my team, for my country, and for myself. It's quite an honour to be here. One day I know I'll be remembered, but my career is just starting out, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
