S59 SMJHL PT #4 - Pre-game playlist
#1

At this point in the season, you should be starting to get into the groove with your teammates. But it's not all about the chemistry when you're on the ice - it's the tunes you listen to in the locker room before you get out there that really help you bond.

Written Task: List 5 songs that are on your team's pre-game playlist, and tell us why they're played (150 word min.)
Graphic Task: Design the album cover for a CD-version of your team's pre-game playlist. Has to include at least the team name and logo.

Reward
3 TPE for doing the thing. (Just one of the things, not both.)

Only S59 SMJHL Rookies (S60 SHL Draftees) are eligible for this PT.
Link PBE or NSFL submissions here to get credit for affiliate claims.

Do not claim this TPE until a post is made in the claim thread.

Deadline: Sunday, May 9th @ 11:59pm EST

The Vancouver Whaler's locker room is full of antics, trash talk, and competitive spirit. But, where the locker room really shines is in the pre-game Jams. The music is as diverse as the roster is and each player brings their own hits to the mix.

1. Starting with team captain Sven Svechnikov the team is brought to life with the heavy metal hit "Awaken" By Metalocalypse-Dethklok. The team is brought to life and energy soars as Sven cranks the volume, his handlebar mustache crooked with a sly smile.
2. Next up we change the pace with Robot Sunfish and Robot Sailfish taking over the aux with their favorite tune "Electric Feel" By MGMT. Their gears turn and the wires connect as the rest of the locker room buzzes with electricity.
3. Third on the line we pass the torch to Makrus "The Tater" Jager who brings the heat with the classic "Legend Has It" By Run the Jewels. The deep base and the famous bars echo throughout the locker room.
4. The penultimate tune on our pregame playlist is given to Alexis Saint-Michel who follows the deep bass of RTJ with "Devil Eyes" By Hippie Sabotage.
5. Lastly, the final song is always stolen by non-other than Narboza Manyhands who really alters the mood with his favorite hit "E.T." By Katy Perry. This hit is lost on many of us in the locker room but its worth it to get Manyhands in the zone.

The first song that we play is Out Of Exile by Audioslave. A classic pump up song- the intro is badass and basically dueling music. If you can't get excited after that you're off the team.

This I'd followed by Helicopter by Bloc Party. The it's got a wicked beat and a great intro. If that guitar doesn't want to make you score, I don't know what will.

You know my name - Chris Cornell. It was the theme for one of the bond movies, Casino Royale. Gets you pumped up and ready to go to war.

The hockey song - when you play the good old hockey game, the best game you can name, you gotta play the hockey song. Obviously.

Last but not least, Never gonna give you up. Cause, we're never gonna let you down, Whalers fans. We'll never turn around and hurt you. Gotta have some fun in the pre game, you know?

As some of you might know, I am a bit older than many on these forums so I kind of like a lot of retro stuff, but overall my tastes are pretty eclectic..  The tunes that I will review will reflect that I like ballads that have meaning, or remind me of a person or time in my life.  I also like the drive and energy of metal and punk.  So, for your entertainment, I encourage you to take a listen to some of the following.  Listed in no particular order:

Drunken Lullabies

This punk song is about the violence Ireland and Northern Ireland dealt with in the 1960’s. I think it is about how ridiculous it is for the Catholic and Protestants to continue to use violence against one another. The drunken lullabies are the songs each side sings to itself to justify perpetuating the violence against each other, but they are each singing the same drunken lullaby.  A similar message can be found in Brothers In Arms, a Dire Straits tune that says “Why should we make war on our Brothers in Arms?”

Girl From The North Country

My rock roots show in this selection.  The Lions cover of this Bob Dylan tune is a departure from the folk song original.  This song is one of my favourites because it reminds me of the love of my life, Nikki (Starr).    She is also from the North as am I.  We both still live up here and have no regrets of having spent our lives here thus far.

Sultans of Swing (Cover by Leo Moracchioli and Mary Spender)

I neglected to mention in my intro that I very much enjoy iconic guitar solos.  Mark Knopfler’s solo in the original version is one of these.  However, I found the solos performed by Leo and Mary equally entertaining as they incorporate an element of Heavy Metal.  Also, watch the dynamic between Leo and Mary in the video…...pretty funny.

From Red Deer to Margaree

I first heard this tune performed by the Grievous Angels.  I am not sure as to whether I like their version or the one done by the Skydiggers.  Both are kind of folky and easy listening.  The lyrics remind me of a time in one of the iterations of my life when I was travelling from place to place taking courses, giving presentations and doing contract work for the Ontario Government.  I didn’t think the incessant travelling would ever end.  Nikki was travelling with me and when I heard theses words:

As sunlight rises on a distant sky
and says good morning to our tired eyes.
You look to me and I know that its alright.

I was right back behind the wheel of my old pickup bangin’ on down the highway.  Like I said if you like the Skydiggers version it would be worth  listening to the original by the Grievous Angels.

Peggy Sue(ft. Cobra Starship)

Before you ask, “No, I don’t remember Buddy Holly”.  Buddy Holly was a pioneer of rock and roll.  He died tragically in a plane crash at the age of 22, only two short years after recording his second  major hit Peggy Sue.  I like this modernized version of the iconic tune played by Cobra Starship.  The introduction of a female vocal is a refreshing twist.

  1. PA PA YA (BABYMETAL) - No Japanese metal head like Seteki can have a playlist without BABYMETAL on it.  As the first to always arrive in the locker room, the team is always greeted with some screaming Japanese girls while Seteki puts on his pads.
  2. Angus Mcfife (Gloryhammer) - As the previous song ends, the second assistant captain has a smile on his face as he knows his theme song is about to start up.  Everyone's mood increases as they hear the Mcfife anthem build up.
  3. Laser Raptor 3D (Grailknights) - Now begins the traditional Colorado Raptors' pump up songs.  Laser Raptor 3D is a tradition that has lasted seasons and is not about to stop now.
  4. La Raptor Alterada (Erik Estrada) - Because the Raptors are cultured, no pre-game playlist is complete without some Hispanic fire.  This tradition is as old as the Laser Raptor 3D tradition and is also still going strong.
  5. Drink (Alestorm) - Finally, the pre-game hits are concluded with some old-fashioned pirate metal.  The team uses this to get them in an aggressive mind-set and to help encourage them to earn their after-game party.

1. For Whom the Bell Tolls, Metallica: Anaheim players get hyped for the coming game with this classic, chosen for its fast paced beat and ability to drive the boys to be ready to run through a wall and get a big win
2. Enter Sandman, Metallica: The walkout song for the players, Enter Sandman is chosen for the same reason Mariano Rivera entered games for the Yankees to it - it lets everyone know that the best have arrived, and it's time for domination
3. Purple Lamborghini, Skrillex & Rick Ross: This song gets everyone fired up with its incredible beat. Requested specifically by the rookies of the Outlaws, it's their contribution to the pregame ritual
4. Hot N*gga, Bobby Shmurda: A more relaxed but still upbeat song, this song was chosen for its ability to relax, but also get everyone pumped
5. Master of Puppets, Metallica: Another Metallica song, this is a choice from the coaching staff, as its incredibly fast paced chords gets everyone ready for war

I normally listen to my own music it gets me hyped and ready to go. Number one my go to sos by the glorious sons a fun song with a lot of beat and a lot of head banging. Number 2 I go to is legendary by skillet very uplifting and inspirational and very good tune. Number 3 tune is Brilliant by shinedown a very interesting tune that is full of ups and downs and lows and highs with again a nice beat to shake your head to. Number 4 is Hit the Ground Running  I like this song because it is upbeat and it talks to me because it's like my life in a song really it's very fun to listen to. Number 5 is of course legends because that it what I want to be in this league at this point and it is very uplifting and talks to me on a personal level because I want to be a legend. That is usually top 5 on my list to listen a lot of rock pop songs that I have grown to love and to listen to get me hype every day. I can say that you will enjoy and like all of these songs and the artists. I think that you will like them to jam out to as well.

Alright, this is one I've been waiting for, and I didn't even know it was coming:

Breaking Benjamin - Breath: This one hits home because it's difficult to play a lot of minutes, and it can take the breath right out of you, and so can our gameplay take the breath right out of our opponents. It's important to remember that we can recover and keep our opponents down by punishing them through gameplay and our own physical conditioning.

Zero 9:36 - Adrenaline: All about getting that adrenaline high wearing off and having your teammates help you back onto your skates, getting back up, and going hard through the exhaustion and pain.

Offspring - Let the Bad Time Roll: This one is more because it's a newer song, but also a reminder that we can't win them all, and to enjoy our profession as much as we can, when we can.

Seether - Beg: What we're gonna make our opponents do when we beat the crap out of them and win the game, they gonna Beg us to stop!

Kesha- TiK ToK: Cause someone has to play some good Kesha around here, and Maine sure as hell ain't doing it!

Finally a PT I can get behind. Let’s get this party started.

#1- “Coffin” by The Amity Affliction
- The beginning of any playlist is extremely important, you need a song that will set the tone for what’s to become and get your mind in the right place. “Coffin” is a 2 minute long “intro” song, and normally I skip right past intro songs, they never do much for me, but this one is built different. With a slow, chilling start that gradually climbs into an epic, anthemic second half that will put chills down your spine, it perfectly rolls us into the rest of the playlist.

#2- “Cutthroat” by Blessthefall
- At this point, it’s well known that the Anaheim Outlaws are the bad boys of the SMJHL, a fact they love and embrace, and with that comes a lot of hate from opponents, which is why the opening lyrics of this song are directed directly towards the haters: ”You can’t say say shit, you little pale bastard..fuck all ya’ll, suck my dick”. This song is starts hard and stays hard, blistering your ear canals and revving you up to cheap shot your opponents into the boards.

#3- “Your Betrayal” by Bullet For My Valentine
- I’ll be honest if you don’t know this song, I can’t say much else, this song needs no Introduction, it’s an absolute banger and never ceases to hit all the right chords to cause an eargasmic finish.

#4- “Antivist” by Bring Me The Horizon
- As we near the end of the pregame playlist, it’s time to ramp up the ante and quit with the foreplay. ”Middle fingers up, if you don’t give a fuck” rips into your skull as the song begins, setting the tone for blistering song from start to finish, perfectly setting up the closing song.

#5- “Dethrone” by Bad Omens
- At this point, your blood is pretty pumped and your ready to run through a motherfucking wall for your teammates, and this song will have you going down to hell to curb stomp Satan for the fun of it. With lyrics like “You thought you could dig deep enough to bury me?” Bad Omens brings things to a head and will you send into the ice ready for a bloodbath.

When thinking about the job that our General Manager Gabe has done the locker room likes to listen to the song Mad World by Gary Jules as we truly embrace the downward spiral he has taken us upon.
To get over the melancholy left from thinking about how terrible of a job Gabe does we listen to The Only Thing They Fear Is You by Mick Gordon to really get ourselves pumped up.
In honor of our new goalie we listen to the Simpsons theme song and try not to look up his kilt.
IN honor of myself, Guy Fieri, we listen to the Diners Drive-ins and Dives theme song and think about the awesome trip to flavortown we are going to make after the game as I whip up a feast for the boys].
Finally we listen to Scoring by KALAN.FRFR because it was the only song about scoring I could find.

See what I say here is actually law with the team now, so I have to think long and hard. I really need to decide if im going to pick decent answers or annoy my team, but why not both?
1) Iron Maiden -The Trooper - Name a better start than Iron fucking Maiden, especially a song like "The Trooper". Fast paced, and a good way to start hyping yourself or the crowd up for a game, especially in the Battle Born State.

2) AC/DC - Long Way to the Top - This is actually the song played in arena right before the team comes out onto the ice. who doesnt love some AC/DC and the message is as true to rock and roll as it is to the SMJHL, Its a long way to the top.

3)  Rob Zombie - Dragula - Hard rock, fast paced, catchy. If this song is good enough for me to blast while cleaning my house, its good enough for the team to do their skate around to, and the man directed the most horrifying Halloween movies to ever be released, respect.

4) Darude - Sandstorm - Any player that doesnt put this on their list is lying or an idiot. This might be one of the most iconic hockey songs ever to exist and if you disagree, go to an OHL game and tell me if you hear it played over the PA system. There is no more reason than that.

5) Monster Truck - The Enforcer - This is the song the team come onto the ice to, fast paced, hard instrumentals, literally about a hockey enforcer. This might be the most hockey song to exist whether it gets the respect its due or not. Canadian band based out of Hamilton, im even going to link it so that people might listen to it. If i could this song would play during the entire game.

On my team, we don't normally listen to music as a whole, but that doesn't mean that I am not in love with music myself. Fair warning, I listen to a lot of music, and a lot of weird music in some eyes, so watch out.

1. Music For 18 Musicians - Steve Reich

This piece may seem quite simple to the more ignorant of music theory, but this piece is particularly interesting, as there are no defined places where the ensemble moves forward in the music. The musicians direct the piece. It is effectively a chord cycle with the same rhythmic narrative and motive, with complex chords pulsating over a simple melodic structure. So good.

2. The New Moon in the Old Moons Arms - Michael Kamen

I listen to a lot of classical, but this piece is one of my favorites. It is an epic tone ballad involving Native American mythology, a dance between two creatures, and an epic ending that has left me emotional many times. This piece is great.

3. Gorgon - Christopher Rouse

This piece is not for the faint of heart. This piece is almost a direct contrast to the previous piece I mentioned, as it represents the brutality of the Three Gorgons in Greek Mythology. Loud and crass are the two words that describe it best, but the carnal energy it gives off always brings me back.

4. Platinum Rows - Tyondai Braxton

Really the whole album (Central Market) rules, but this piece is a piece that stands out as its semi-chaotic nature, combined with some kinda odd instrumentation, brings me to always figure out what the piece actually means, whether it be an experience itself, or have an underlying meaning.

5. Petrouchka - Igor Stravinsky

Sensing a theme here? Who needs rock and roll, and metal music, when you got classical music that may have the same feeling in you. This piece is a ballet made for the Ballet Russes in 1911, its impact is still around, and is being observed by many people. Stravinsky has also released other music that has the same impact as this piece, but another piece that has the same impact as Rouse's Gorgon, which is the Rite of Spring. Another one not for the faint of heart, but still intersting. Overall, Stravinksy is a great composer and this piece is no exception.
