Taking a look at Thomas Vanice's career so far

I hear there is a double media going on so please double it up!
When I created my player Thomas Vanice, I wasn't sure what this career would look like for me. I was pretty motivated to earn well here and have a good career, despite genuinely not enjoying this league most of the time, but I wanted to one day become a GM here to accomplish my goal of winning a title in the big three leagues as a GM. Plus I guess MVP would be another goal to do in this league. That being said, I kind of expected my earning would taper off eventually and I just never earned enough money to really have a great career. That being said, I am pretty happy with how my career has gone so far and I think I have had a quiet, solid career for a semi-earner and want to look at my career a bit so far and what is to come going forward a bit. I remember I did not create at the perfect time, so even at the draft I was already behind a little bit in TPE. That being said, it still shocked me to see how far I fell in that draft. I had kind of built up a reputation in sim leagues as a max earner and as a dedicated member, creating very highly respected players in both the ISFL and PBE, hall of famers even and was also a GM. I felt like there would be a decent amount of interest in me in a lower round perhaps, though perhaps not as low as I ended up. I fell quite hard in the draft. Further than I even remembered now. I was somehow taken in the fourth round, at 51st overall, by the New Orleans Specters. It was kind of where I expected to end up, though like I said, not that late. Ironically, and insultingly, four teams actually passed before I was drafted. Four teams would rather just not have my player than pick me. That definitely was a wake up call and definitely felt very insulting and upsetting at the time, and it did definitely give me a chip on my shoulder. Now, how has my career turned out? Well, I will say, like above, that I was not a max earner. Money was always the biggest issue for me, as I stopped buying equipment pretty much right away and in the later seasons have even stopped buying training weekly just to save money for my eventual recreate. I am currently at 1427 TPE, which is not perfect for S50 players. In comparison, the leader of my draft class currently has 2201 TPE. Obviously I didn't earn great if I am 800 TPE behind, but 1400 TPE is still a decent amount of TPE I think. And compared to my draft position, I have actually outperformed others by quite a bit. Drafted 51st overall, I now find myself in 21st place of those that are left in our draft class. A nice jump of 30 spots, pretty excited and happy with that. After being called up in S53, I joined the majors roster for New Orleans and started on their lowest line, on a team that was very good at the time. I didn't mind this really and enjoyed three wonderful seasons on that team with a few of my close friends, it was a fun experience and a good time. Statistically I never really did well, but at the time that didn't really matter much to me yet. After that, I was left unprotected (completely correctly) in an expansion draft. I actually had a very strong sense that I would not get picked and was also told so by my GMs at the time, but lo and behold, once the draft started, I actually felt like I would be picked up pretty early even. Ironically, I thought I would end up on the other team, due to hotdog being the GM there and we worked together in the PBE on the history team, so I felt like he might pick me up. Instead, I landed in Seattle and admittedly, I have been less involved in the team than I had intended to be, in terms of behind the scenes work, war room etc. I am mostly just quiet and occasionally recommend a player I know from another league. That being said, I have enjoyed my time on Seattle quite a bit and I actually started doing better with my player, now suddenly on a bad team where I would be more of a focus on offense. In the first few seasons I even played on the first line, though as I said, the team usually was pretty bad, so my stats, while improved, were still kind of underwhelming. Obviously the lack of top TPE and the switch to the new sim didn't help this, but it ended up alright for me. I have now played four seasons for Seattle and just finished my most successful season in terms of statistics, despite now playing on the 2nd line of the team, but the team around me has gotten much more successful and better. Due to being here since the start, I enjoy some decent spots in career leadership positions with the team, which, as anyone who has followed my articles in the ISFL of NOLA top ten lists will know, I care about quite a lot in these leagues. I love league history and love statistics and seeing where I rank with my player compared to others. I always knew I wouldn't break league records or fight for awards with this player, so at least I am able to have some decent results with the team and maybe I can become a somewhat recognizable figure in Seattle history. My player will hit regression after this season (I believe?) and so the eventual decline will start, though I know regression starts slowly here. Sadly, we are faced with yet another expansion and so my player may once again be on the move. Given my motivating factors, I don't think I will be protected and I actually don't necessarily think I will get picked either. My main motivation with Vanice now is the team history spreadsheet for Seattle and if that is gone, I would likely retire my player and start over. So hopefully I can stay here a bit longer and get some more stats, but if not, that's totally okay too. So how has Vanice done year to year, has there been improvement? How does he compare to teammates or players from his own regression class? Let's take a look. First off, let me say that the first four seasons we only played 50 games and now we play 66 so some of the stats increase just comes from more games played. That being said, I will only compare stats as they are and not per game. Team GP G A P S53 NOL 50 11 7 18 S54 NOL 50 9 6 15 S55 NOL 50 8 13 21 S56 SEA 50 9 25 34 S57 SEA 66 16 26 42 S58 SEA 66 12 31 43 S59 SEA 66 20 32 52 Goals: S53: 11 S54: 9 S55: 8 S56: 9 S57: 16 S58: 12 S59: 20 Obviously the goals improved a lot with more games, but also just the team getting better. I finally had a 20 goal season this year and definitely improved a lot. Clearly my best season in goals came this year. Assists: S53: 7 S54: 6 S55: 13 S56: 25 S57: 26 S58: 31 S59: 32 Assists end up a bit more consistent, with each season in the last four season being 25+ assist seasons. There was not as much improvement from last season to this one, but I still did reach my best season in assists this year. Proud of that! Points: S53: 18 S54: 15 S55: 21 S56: 34 S57: 42 S58: 43 S59: 52 Same story here, obviously as this combines goals and assists. But still great to see the improvement in basically every season. The jump from 43 last year to now 52 is a great sight to see, especially with less minutes and playing on the second line. I love that I finally had a 50 point season as well. Definitely a great feeling! Plus / Minus: S53: -5 S54: 1 S55: 15 S56: -9 S57: -1 S58: -35 S59: 13 Plus minus is an interesting statistic. It definitely shows that Seattle wasn't necessarily a great team for a while but the jump from last season to this one is insane. I guess a part of that is playing on less power plays now, but still. What a change! That is a 48 point swing. Crazy! Penalty minutes: S53: 26 S54: 10 S55: 38 S56: 10 S57: 20 S58: 28 S59: 4 I don't really think penalty minutes is an important statistic to highlight normally, but I know this season was a huge outlier. I actually didn't have my first penalty minutes until really late in the season, so it looked like maybe I would be able to do an entire season without a penalty. Crazy stuff. Even 4 seems really low and cool though! Shots on goal and shot percentage: S53: 82, 13.42% S54: 120, 7.50% S55: 128, 6.25% S56: 147, 6.12% S57: 148, 10.81% S58: 204, 5.88% S59: 180, 11.11% Very interesting this one. I obviously like that over time my shots on goal increased, but I think the percentage is especially fascinating. Obviously a great season this year, one of my best percentages. But it feels like the percentage is all over the place. 6 to 11 percent is a huge difference, almost double in a way. I wonder if my build changed or if this is just pure sim luck? Hits: S53: 36 S54: 60 S55: 67 S56: 96 S57: 108 S58: 138 S59: 117 Great to see my hits improving most seasons (except this one) as well! I guess especially when you think about the penalty minutes, I am proud of how many hits I am still able to get with that. Shots blocked: S53: 18 S54: 50 S55: 30 S56: 58 S57: 91 S58: 67 S59: 43 What happened in S57?! That's what I want to know haha. Suddenly I was the shot blocker extraordinaire. I had no idea. Sadly, this one has gone down now. I am not sure why. Perhaps also a random one? Or I am not sure. Grade, offensive grade, defensive grade: S53: 55, 57, 50 S54: 57, 58, 52 S55: 56, 60, 50 S56: 61, 68, 52 S57: 63, 67, 57 S58: 63, 71, 53 S59: 65, 73, 54 This really shows the great progress that gaining TPE really has on your statistics. Clearly shows that slowly every season I got better. Defensively, things didn't change as much, but offensively I have just been getting better and better, so my overall grade also got a lot better. I am really happy with this improvement. Time on ice: S53: 15:22 S54: 17:02 S55: 17:01 S56: 22:12 S57: 21:28 S58: 22:38 S59: 20:55 This makes a lot of sense with what happened in my career. The first three seasons at a better team where I played on a lower line, then lots of ice time in the first line and power plays and now a bit lower again on the second line and less power play time. I want to now compare myself with my teammates. I described above that my player has been with Seattle since the start and so I enjoy looking at the franchise records and seeing where my player ranks. Goals: While Kane is the obvious leader in goals with 103, leading by quite a lot, I am actually 2nd in goals on the team in the history. I have 57 goals in my four seasons, ahead of other big goal scorers like Darzins and Wanesly. Kane had an insane year every team, basically getting 25 or 26 goals every season. It looks like my 20 goals this season were the only other team any player on Seattle had 20 goals in a season other than him. His first season is especially crazy where he had 26 goals and the next best Seattle player had 11. That's crazy. Assists: Hilariously, I once created this player to be a goal scorer and to be a selfish player. Well that worked out. Somehow I find myself in first place with assists. My 114 assists are ahead of Kane and Kanoff at 102 and 101. I really love that I am able to lead a category like this one. Very fun! Though it is unlikely that I will keep the lead here long term obviously. Points: As should be obviously by the two points above, I am in second place with points behind Kane. Kane has 205 and I have 171. No one else is close to us, with Kanoff in third place at 137 points. Pretty nice gap and so I feel pretty good about this category! Hits: Weirdly, my player is pretty good in this category. My 459 hits are 2nd on the team behind Darrow's 500. Consistency is key here it seems! Shots on goal: Vanice is third in this category, though it is very close. Kane has 515, Darrow has 509 and Vanice has 499. 4th place is behind by over 100 shots, at 367 is Kanoff. Huge gap at that point really. Blocks: Obviously my player is no defender but I am doing alright here with my consistency. 259 blocks are 4th on the team, far behind the top three but still cool to lead the best of the rest. Plus / Minus: Admittedly, I am not really good here, though no one on the team really is. My -32 rank me 13th on the team. Though of those that were on the team all four years it seems I am a bit better, ranking 2nd, if I am reading the chart right. When comparing myself with other players of my draft class, I found some interesting results too. I obviously already compared myself in TPE above, but TPE doesn't necessarily show how well you play. Obviously it is hard to compare with goalies though I have only found 3 people in my draft class that saw ice time as goalies. Some also never reached the majors, so that is also a good sign they weren't any good. Finally, comparing between forwards and defenders with goals and assists isn't necessarily fair, but this purpose, I am doing it anyway. So of the S50 draft class, here they are ranked by goals scored in their career so far: 1) Phineas Gold 173 2) Bobby Lane 167 3) Karl Krashwagen 135 4) Joseph Weston 132 5) Aron Hernadivic 120 6) Ryan Shepard 114 7) James Ronlain 114 8) Vorian Atreides 106 9) Augustus Wang 89 10) Ivan Maximus 89 11) Adam Barron 88 12) Michael Fitted 88 13) Henrik Lekberg Osterman 85 14) Thomas Vanice 85 15) First-Name Last-Name 85 16) Alex Rykov 75 17) Tom Fiddler 74 18) Samuel Michaud 68 19) Bjorn Leppanen 67 20) Akira Ren 63 21) Disisde Dayudie 50 22) Rintarou Okabe 46 23) Ursin Zimmermann 45 24) Sasha Dangelchek 37 25) Daniel Bischoff 35 26) Kalevolaripaavo Käspertommevisnapuu 29 27) Luca Veccelli 28 28) Jakob Hamr 27 29) Ricky Bobby 24 30) Andrey Barbashev II 22 31) Andre Petrikov 21 32) Jack Wilson 16 33) Daniel Kuster 10 34) Kevin Robinson 8 35) Gylfi Eriksson 5 36) Francois Breton 3 37) Flash Gordon 1 38) Johnny Patey 0 39) Mitchell Maverick 0 And here they are ranked by assists: 1) Samuel Michaud 251 2) Bobby Lane 220 3) Vorian Atreides 212 4) Augustus Wang 205 5) Ryan Shepard 199 6) Adam Barron 191 7) Henrik Lekberg Osterman 182 8) Aron Hernadivic 177 9) Joseph Weston 176 10) Tom Fiddler 170 11) Ivan Maximus 169 12) Phineas Gold 168 13) Disisde Dayudie 164 14) Akira Ren 156 15) Karl Krashwagen 150 16) Ursin Zimmermann 146 17) Michael Fitted 140 18) Thomas Vanice 140 19) Rintarou Okabe 140 20) Bjorn Leppanen 139 21) First-Name Last-Name 127 22) James Ronlain 100 23) Jakob Hamr 90 24) Alex Rykov 87 25) Luca Veccelli 62 26) Sasha Dangelchek 57 27) Andrey Barbashev II 44 28) Jack Wilson 37 29) Ricky Bobby 32 30) Daniel Bischoff 27 31) Daniel Kuster 27 32) Kalevolaripaavo Käspertommevisnapuu 19 33) Andre Petrikov 13 34) Kevin Robinson 11 35) Flash Gordon 11 36) Francois Breton 5 37) Gylfi Eriksson 4 38) Johnny Patey 1 39) Mitchell Maverick 1 And finally in points: 1) Bobby Lane 387 2) Phineas Gold 341 3) Samuel Michaud 319 4) Vorian Atreides 318 5) Ryan Shepard 313 6) Joseph Weston 308 7) Aron Hernadivic 297 8) Augustus Wang 294 9) Karl Krashwagen 285 10) Adam Barron 279 11) Henrik Lekberg Osterman 267 12) Ivan Maximus 258 13) Tom Fiddler 244 14) Michael Fitted 228 15) Thomas Vanice 225 16) Akira Ren 219 17) Disisde Dayudie 214 18) James Ronlain 214 19) First-Name Last-Name 212 20) Bjorn Leppanen 206 21) Ursin Zimmermann 191 22) Rintarou Okabe 186 23) Alex Rykov 162 24) Jakob Hamr 117 25) Sasha Dangelchek 94 26) Luca Veccelli 90 27) Andrey Barbashev II 66 28) Daniel Bischoff 62 29) Ricky Bobby 56 30) Jack Wilson 53 31) Kalevolaripaavo Käspertommevisnapuu 48 32) Daniel Kuster 37 33) Andre Petrikov 34 34) Kevin Robinson 19 35) Flash Gordon 12 36) Gylfi Eriksson 9 37) Francois Breton 8 38) Johnny Patey 1 39) Mitchell Maverick 1 So there you have it. All in all, I am 15th in points, quite a bit above the 51st spot that I was drafted in. I am quite happy being 15th in points, honestly. That seems like a decent enough career for a semi earner and I even outplayed my TPE position a little as well. How do the top 20 look compared to their draft position: 1) Bobby Lane - 4th overall pick 2) Phineas Gold - 14th overall pick 3) Samuel Michaud - 18th overall pick 4) Vorian Atreides - 8th overall pick 5) Ryan Shepard - 5th overall pick 6) Joseph Weston - 11th overall pick 7) Aron Hernadivic - 21st overall pick 8) Augustus Wang - 6th overall pick 9) Karl Krashwagen - 23rd overall pick 10) Adam Barron - 1st overall pick 11) Henrik Lekberg Osterman - 3rd overall pick 12) Ivan Maximus - 2nd overall pick 13) Tom Fiddler - 24th overall pick 14) Michael Fitted - 39th overall pick 15) Thomas Vanice - 51st overall pick 16) Akira Ren - 69th overall pick 17) Disisde Dayudie - 7th overall pick 18) James Ronlain - 20th overall pick 19) First-Name Last-Name - 43rd overall pick 20) Bjorn Leppanen - 31st overall pick Honestly, looking at that list, I feel like maybe this was not a great year for GMs and the draft. There were clearly a lot of misses, lots of high draftees in the top 20 here, not just me. Guys like Akira Ten who was drafted even behind me and such. Also even at the top, you have two guys in the late 1st or early 2nd round in the top 3. I feel like there really wasn't a very accurate situation for GMs here. Perhaps the next few seasons will still change this, but I feel like this is definitely a sign that this was a weak draft in terms of how GMs performed. I will say that looking at the TPE in comparison sort of can change the feeling a bit further. While we see someone like Adam Barron, the first overall pick, only at 10th in points, he is in fact #1 in TPE, so it seems like less bad of a choice suddenly. Still, the misses are still as blatant, with Akira Ren even higher in TPE than in points, at 3rd overall in TPE in this class. Phineas Gold is perfectly placed at 14th overall in TPE as the 14th overall pick, yet outperforming his TPE and 2nd in points. I guess the TPE are fairly close together at the top honestly, with many people max earning in this class it seems. Between 1st and 16th there are exactly 300 TPE difference, which I imagine at 2201 to 1901 TPE makes not a ton of difference anymore. But who knows! But yeah, I think that's about it with my brief look at my career and my comparison to other players of the same regression class to see how I have done. All in all, I am pretty happy with it so far and I am curious to see how expansion turns out and whether I will get to spend some more seasons in Seattle adding some stats or whether I end up somewhere else and start my next career sooner than later with a new player. I have no idea what my next player might look like yet, I may have to talk to some of my friends in the league and figure out what suits me best and what the league needs most in terms of players and what I can do to make my next career more interesting still. I definitely plan on earning money better this time around and making sure I can stay with the top of the class in TPE a bit better, so that I can have some more success and maybe even have a chance at a decent career for once here as well. And who knows maybe it is a pathway to an MVP trophy or a GM job in the future down the line. I think the chances are extremely low sadly, but I will never give up haha. ![]() ![]() Graphic Graders Killing you slowly ![]() IIHF Federation Head Toast's Idiot of the Year 2021 ![]() SHL GM siMp |
