SMJHL Team History

The first few seasons are a bit iffy due to lack of data, but here is a visualization of how the SMJHL has morphed over the years:

The Vancouver Whalers are the only team to exist in their current state from S1 through S61. Kelowna is right behind them, joining in S2.

There are four instances where a city lost their team for a few seasons and had one return. Lethbridge had a team from S1 - S4 and then lost them to Chicago. Lethbridge then had an expansion team in S45. Regina had a team from S18 - S24, and now has a team again starting in S61. Chicago had a team in S5 - S6 and again in S9 - S12. Prince George is the only city to have the same franchise return after a stint in another city. Prince George has the Firebirds from S1 - S41, except for a time in S18 - S24 when they left for Regina. Seattle and Montreal both went through rebranding, but the franchise never left the city.

The current Carolina franchise has been all over and hold the record for the amount of host cities. (Actually tied with Anchorage)

The teams have been fairly distributed across the United States and Canada over the years.

In S6, the Seattle Stingrays won the Four-Star Cup. This is the only instance of a now defunct franchise winning a cup. Every other cup was won by a franchise that currently exists.

I'm sure a lot of you know a lot more about all this than I do. Apologies if there is false data.

This is really cool! Just curious if I'm understanding the chart correctly, but wouldn't the Anchorage franchise and Carolina franchise be tied with 3 host cities?

You're right - I was just looking at the lines and counting Montreal twice since there were two different brands. Good eye!
