Dirty Boots comes from a small town in Newfoundland. It had just enough kids to get outside after school and drop a hockey ball. There was no big mall or department stores or even a large hospital with a parking lot to put two nets. But not to far from the bog, just down the trail from the post office, down the very beaten path, there was a clearing. Not a blade of grass was to be seen, but instead you'd find dust and dirt. And in that dirt you'd find the footprints of boots, sneakers, dress shoes, sandals and whatever was worn as the kids gathered with their hockey sticks and made the most of what they had. Some kids played casually, but others took it very seriously and those were the ones that hopped in the van to get to the next town over where they were able to take off those boots and sneakers to be able to lace up in ice skates at the rink.
Boots was one of those players. Faithfully he was there, at the clearing to drop a hockey ball and make prints in the dirt and never missing a chance to get to the ice rink. He skated with the others from his town initially but started to get noticed by rink staff. Next thing Boots knew he was on the towns team. The town had never accomplished much in the past but suddenly with Boots on the team everything started going their way. Somehow his team mates always had the puck on their stick. So long as Boots was on the ice he was able to get it to them. His team managed to get further in the local championship than they had ever gone before. Something no one had ever expected from them.
Boots showed up to the rink every day to get better and more people started showing up to watch him play. Next thing he knew he was getting scouted for a chance to enter the SMJHL. Boots spoke with many teams, even the local Newfoundland Berserkers. Some teams got him in on the excitement of where the team was at, others didn't seem as interested but Boots really just wanted to play hockey on a team that would have him and let him play his style of hockey, to find his teammates on the ice.
On August 22nd, it was draft day for the SMJHL. Boots waited patiently alongside the rest of his hometown for his name to show up on the screen. They watched the first overalls get taken and teams Boots had talked to take their picks. It was the 19th overall pick, the Detroit Falcons selected Dirty Boots. The town erupted with excitement.
Boots is now in Detroit waiting for preseason to start, already anxious to get on the ice and start helping out his team. Although he's away from home, the locker room is already filling the home town feeling of closeness and positivity. Another place where many foot steps had already been, but now with the addition of two more boots.
