It was only a matter of time, but with the S59 SMJHL draft class (S60 SHL class) finally in their third years, it's as good a time as any to see the steals and busts of the draft, and where they might go if the draft were to happen again today. I am mainly going to be looking at TPE, but in the cases of ties or differences of a single point, stats may be used as well. I also might just decide someone should've gone there anyway, like I'm about to with the 1OA selection, despite them being 5th in class TPE. I will also only be looking at the first two rounds.
Round 1 1. Stan Din'desque, F - Actual Selection: 1OA - TPE: 605 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 20 G, 33 A, 53 P Remaining at first overall is Stan Din'desque, as I feel that Anaheim would not change their selection of the center at first overall, not just because he's an invaluable asset, but because they spent a lot of money on that cameo, so who cares about a little bit of TPE? Din'desque performed well in his two seasons for Anaheim before being traded, and looks poised to do even better in his final season in the SMJHL. 2. High Haschdi, F - Actual Selection: 15OA - TPE: 632 Career Numbers: 152 GP, 24 G, 49 A, 73 P There's no way that Haschdi would fall as far as he did in a re-draft, as the German winger was an absolute stud for Anaheim over his only two SMJHL seasons before being called up by Texas. He is his class' TPE leader, 6 ahead of Gonzo Goobledygook, and has the numbers to back up his selection being moved up to 2nd overall. 3. Greyson Cooper, F - Actual Selection: 3OA - TPE: 614 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 43 G, 36 A, 79 P Coming in at third is Greyson Cooper, and the main reason I have him going here and not Goobledygook, is that it was clear at the time of the draft that Quebec wanted Cooper here, and he has backed up that want and confidence by being rock solid for the Citadelles. There's no reason to think that Quebec changes their mind here, especially with him being an elite goal scorer. 4. Maxwell Carrigan, D - Actual Selection: 4OA - TPE: 591 Career Numbers: 153 GP, 14 G, 32 A, 46 P Okay, for the third time in the top 4 this is happening, but Jax is literally the GM of Nevada now, so Nevada changing this pick would not make the least bit of sense, especially given that Carrigan has turned into one of there core defenders over the previous two seasons. 5. Gonzo Gobbledygook, F - Actual Selection: 7OA - TPE: 626 Career Numbers: 156 GP, 33 G, 45 A, 78 P Gobbledygook finally moves up in the draft to Vancouver. Second in his draft class, he boasts solid numbers over the course of his career in Colorado, and there's absolutely no way that Vancouver pass up on him this time around with their back to back picks. 6. Zak Wilson, D - Actual Selection: 9OA - TPE: 610 Career Numbers: 152 GP, 12 G, 29 A, 41 P The leading defender of the class by TPE, Wilson would get snapped up by his current team of Vancouver, in place of teammate NeverBrokeAgain YoungBoy, as opposed to dropped down to Detroit at 9th and eventually being traded to Vancouver. Wilson has been a solid option at defense for the Falcons the previous two seasons, and looks poised to be on the top pairing with his new team in Vancouver. 7. Evil AllBran, F - Actual Selection: 34 OA - TPE: 604 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 43 G, 30 A, 73 P The first steal of this draft is Evil AllBran, who went in the third round to Newfoundland, but has proven to be a top earner in his class, and a key part of the Newfoundland team, especially in his sophomore season. He would not be allowed to fall in this redraft, with Colorado snagging him instead at 7th. 8. Marcel Beck, D - Actual Selection: 8OA - TPE: 600 Career Numbers: 156 GP, 13 G, 40 A, 53 P St. Louis gets their man again in the redraft, as he comes right back to them at 8th. Beck is the second-highest defenseman in his draft class, and has been invaluable for St. Louis, so it works out perfectly for the Scarecrows that he is able to come right back to them this time around. 9. Jonathon Hagan, D - Actual Selection: 37OA - TPE: 596 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 17 G, 38 A, 55 P Detroit might have lost Wilson in the redraft, but get yet another steal of the original draft in Jonathon Hagan. Hagan went in the fourth round to Anaheim, and has made himself into a top pairing defenseman over his previous two seasons. In his two seasons for Anaheim before being traded, he showed off a solid two-way game, and would not be allowed to fall as he did originally. 10. Olof Karsikko, G - Actual Selection: 29 OA - TPE: 592 Career Numbers: 92 GP, .915 SV%, 2.57 GAA, 10 Shutouts The first goalie taken in the redraft, Olof leads his class among goaltenders in development. While he has been a mainstay in Vancouver for his first two seasons, instead he is taken early by Kelowna to give them their future starter. 11. Senji Seteki, G - Actual Selection: Undrafted - TPE: 587 Career Numbers: 72 GP, .905 SV%, 2.88 GAA, 4 Shutouts The former Colorado netminder went undrafted originally, but not this time. St. Louis would snap him up in a heartbeat, given his rate of development and career numbers over his time in Colorado. 12. Lucas Raymond, F - Actual Selection: 18OA - TPE: 585 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 28 G, 45 A, 73 P Raymond fell all the way to Carolina's three picks in a row during the original draft, but he would surely not have a chance to escape the 1st round undrafted this time. The forward has shown his development into a playmaking center well for Carolina, and features heavily in their top 6. Round 2 13. Zhen Roza, G - Actual Selection: 24OA - TPE: 582 Career Numbers: 81 GP, .907 SV%, 3.30 GAA, 5 Shutouts Roza found his name called by Anaheim at the tail end of the second round originally, but would be picked up by Maine here. The netminder was solid as a backup in his rookie year for Anaheim, then even better in his second year as the starter, and would do well for Maine now. 14. Lev Lebedev, F - Actual Selection: Undrafted - TPE: 572 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 48 G, 45 A, 93 P Lev was undrafted to start his SMJHL Career, but picked up by Vancouver, and been tearing up the league ever since as a highly offensive weapon for the Whalers. Would he go undrafted again? Absolutely not. 15. Daniel Merica Jr., F - Actual Selection: 22OA - TPE: 567 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 23 G, 22 A, 45 P Anaheim would have to settle on taking Merica Jr. at a higher spot than being able to take the steal in Haschdi at 15. Merica Jr. was absolutely filthy for the Outlaws over his two seasons in Anaheim, finding the back of the net on a regular basis, though not as often as he would've liked. 16. Roderic Banes, F - Actual Selection: 25OA - TPE: 567 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 21 G, 30 A, 51 P Carolina would take Banes here at 16, instead of waiting until the third round to pick up their man. Banes has been a solid two-way forward for the Kraken, with a nice goal-scoring touch, and is poised to continue to improve this season for the team. 17. Ty Murphy, F - Actual Selection: Undrafted - TPE: 552 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 12 G, 44 A, 56 P Detroit center Ty Murphy gets drafted this go around, and he brings his playmaking abilities to a solid Carolina top 6, feeding their goal-scorers and tuning up their offense. 18. Bjorn Bjorn, F - Actual Selection: 16OA - TPE: 533 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 28 G, 35 A, 63 P Carolina get to keep Bjorny, as he remains in their 3 pick window, but falls to 18th instead of being picked up at 16. Not that it particularly matters when the Kraken had three picks in a row, but it does for the purposes of this redraft. 19. Jimmy Larkin-Conway, F - Actual Selection: 19OA - TPE: 527 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 40 G, 34 A, 74 P It works out perfectly for Nevada, as they get to grab Jimmy at the exact same spot they did originally, 19th overall. Larkin-Conway has been a solid offensive winger for the Battleborn, contributing with both goals and assists for the team as they come out of their rebuild. 20. Ryan Gardner, D - Actual Selection: 12OA - TPE: 525 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 12 G, 23 A, 35 P Gardner is the first selection to be drafted several picks below their original spot, but I would not call him a bust, as he's been a significant part of the Quebec top 4 for his first two seasons. Anchorage would enjoy his defensive prowess in picking him up here. 21. Mars Stanton, D - Actual Selection: 26OA - TPE: 496 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 15 G, 24 A, 39 P The first member of the class below 500 TPE to this point, Stanton does not fall all the way to St. Louis at 26, but will instead bring his two-way defensive game to Quebec, where he would slot nicely into their top 4 core. 22. Eric Tokke, F - Actual Selection: 30OA - TPE: 487 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 11 G, 24 A, 35 P Anaheim grab a solid forward at 22 in the redraft in Eric Tokke. Tokke is a more defensive and physically oriented grinder than the high-octane offense that they got here originally, but he is still a good middle 6 option for Colorado now, and would be for Anaheim here. 23. Miles O'Brien, F - Actual Selection: 52OA - TPE: 473 Career Numbers: 132 GP, 17 G, 25 A, 42 P Quebec take away Maine's big steal of the draft in O'Brien by taking him at 23rd here in the redraft. O'Brien is the epitome of a two-way forward, slotting in nicely to Maine's middle 6, a spot he would fit well in with Quebec as well. 24. Duncan The Walrus, D - Actual Selection: 2OA - TPE: 472 Career Numbers: 152 GP, 12 G, 37 A, 49 P Considering the drop off with Duncan The Walrus, you could call him the first bust of the redraft, as he falls all the way from 2nd overall to the final pick of the 2nd round, but he has been a solid top 4 defenseman for the Timber, collecting plenty of assists over the previous two seasons, and would be in that role even now for Anaheim. There you have the S59 SMJHL Redraft. There were a few picks that worked out perfectly in terms of where they would land today compared to then, but for the most part a lot of steals would be getting moved into higher rounds, and even a few undrafted players would hear their name called in the first two rounds this time around. While there wasn't a look at the actual draft order of the first two rounds to evaluate it for the best picks and worst busts, that is an article for another day, and it was interesting seeing just how many top earners were taken later on in the juniors draft.
