[2x Draft Media] S63 Draft Needs
#1

Disclaimer: English is my second language, so I apologize in advance for my grammar.
Methodology: In this spreadsheet, I compiled every player from every team. For each team, I averaged the capped TPE by position. By capped TPE I mean that the maximum TPE a player can have is 425. I then calculated the percentage of active players for each team. I averaged the two scores to calculate the needs by position. I used the players listed in the roster section of each team board. If a team had more than 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, or 2 goalies then I deleted the lowest TPE player. If a team had less than 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, or 2 goalies then I added a 155 IA player.

Anaheim Outlaws  Outlaws

TPE Forwards: 62%
TPE Defense:  47%
TPE Goalie:  63%
Team average: 57%
Needs Forward: 81
Needs Defense:  57
Needs Goalie:  81

Conclusion:  The data is clear that the team should target a defenseman in the next draft. They have the second choice overall and Detroit should select a forward so they should be able the select the best defenseman of the 18 available. If we look at By-Tor S63 SMJHL Prospect Preview then it should be clear that the best pick for Anaheim is Ergo Nomic.

Anchorage Armada  Armada

TPE Forwards: 84%
TPE Defense: 62%
TPE Goalie: 44 %
Team average: 65%
Needs Forward: 92
Needs Defense:  65
Needs Goalie:  47

Conclusion: The weakest position of the Armada is in front of the net. The team selects 9th overall. Unfortunately, they are not sure goalie pick in the S62 draft. The three available players are new gens. Armada could instead look at a defenseman with their first pick. I have no doubt that they would be able to pick a good active defenseman with their pick.

Carolina Kraken  Kraken

TPE Forwards: 84%
TPE Defense:  88%
TPE Goalie: 77%
Team average: 84%
Needs Forward: 92
Needs Defense:  94
Needs Goalie:  89

Conclusion: The Kraken is a deep team.  If we look at the data their weakest position is in front of the net, but I would be surprised if they use their first pick for a goalie. In my opinion, they will go with a forward in the first round.

Colorado Raptors  Raptors

TPE Forwards: 76%
TPE Defense: 70%
TPE Goalie: 47%
Team average: 65%
Needs Forward: 80
Needs Defense:  68
Needs Goalie:  48

Conclusion: Another team that would need a goalie. Goalies are in a difficult situation. There are too many of them in the SHL and not enough in the juniors. I normally would think that the Raptors should go with a defenseman with their first pick but they have the 27th pick of the draft and there are 18 defensemen available so it might be difficult to draft a quality defenseman. Because they pick late and their needs between a forward and a defenseman are balanced, I think they should go with the best player available. Someone that they scouted and they feel like he could be active.

Detroit Falcons  Falcons

TPE Forwards:60%
TPE Defense: 61%
TPE Goalie: 70%
Team average: 64%
Needs Forward: 71
Needs Defense:  80
Needs Goalie:  60

Conclusion: The Falcons have the first pick of the draft.  They should focus on the best forward available. If we follow the By-Tor prospect review, then I think that Tim Riggins should be the 1 OA pick.

Great Falls Grizzlies  Grizzlies

TPE Forwards:65%
TPE Defense: 62%
TPE Goalie: 55%
Team average: 60%
Needs Forward: 70
Needs Defense:  64
Needs Goalie:  52

Conclusion: Even if their weakness is in front of the net right now. They should not draft a goalie with their first pick. Their future is assured by Brickwall. At seventh, I would select a defenseman. They should be able to pick an active user.

Kelowna Knights  Knights

TPE Forwards:76%
TPE Defense: 77%
TPE Goalie: 51%
Team average: 68%
Needs Forward: 88
Needs Defense:  88
Needs Goalie:  75

Conclusion: They have the 8th pick overall. They should be able to get one of the top-quality recreates. Either a forward or a defenseman.  I would go with a forward because the teams in front of them have needs for defensemen. This way they should be able to get one of the best forwards available.

Maine Timber  Timber

TPE Forwards:88%
TPE Defense: 68%
TPE Goalie: 100%
Team average: 85%
Needs Forward: 93
Needs Defense:  83
Needs Goalie:  100

Conclusion: Maine doesn’t have a first-round pick. They only have the 17th choice. Their needs are clear. They should do everything to draft a defenseman. There are 18 defensemen in the draft so they should be able to have a mid-quality prospect.

Nevada Battleborn  Battleborn

TPE Forwards:72%
TPE Defense: 75%
TPE Goalie: 70%
Team average: 72%
Needs Forward: 86
Needs Defense:  87
Needs Goalie:  85

Conclusion: The Battleborn need a forward and they will pick Lias Ekholm-Gunnarsson. If user Skildpaddor wasn’t the GM of the Nevada Battleborn then LEG would have been a top 3 pick. The Battleborn are lucky to be able to pick this player in the second round.

Newfoundland Berserkers  Berserkers

TPE Forwards:72%
TPE Defense: 69%
TPE Goalie: 60%
Team average: 67%
Needs Forward: 83
Needs Defense:  83
Needs Goalie:  80

Conclusion: Another team with balanced needs. The Berserkers have two picks in the first round. They should pick their favorite player available with the 3OA pick and then pick a player of a different position with their 13th. This way the team will stay balanced in the future.

Quebec City Citadelles  Citadelles

TPE Forwards:69%
TPE Defense: 90%
TPE Goalie: 82%
Team average: 80%
Needs Forward: 76
Needs Defense:  95
Needs Goalie:  91

Conclusion:  Quebec has the 11th pick in the draft. Their biggest need is a forward. They should be able to pick a top-quality one with their pick. If they pick the right player then the team can be really dangerous in the S62 season.

Regina Elk  Elk

TPE Forwards:63%
TPE Defense: 54%
TPE Goalie: 57%
Team average: 58%
Needs Forward: 77
Needs Defense:  77
Needs Goalie:  53

Conclusion: Regina has the fifth pick overall. They have needs in every position.  They should pick the best player available. Someone that can help them build the future of the team.

St. Louis Scarecrows  Scarecrows

TPE Forwards:58%
TPE Defense: 74%
TPE Goalie: 55%
Team average: 62%
Needs Forward: 54
Needs Defense:  70
Needs Goalie:  52

Conclusion: The Scarecrow picks 6OA and they have needs for forwards. They should be able to pick a max-earning prospect.

Vancouver Whalers  Whalers

Forwards:  78%
Defense: 75%
Goalie: 68%
Team average: 74%
Needs Forward: 71
Needs Defense:  70
Needs Goalie:  59

Conclusion: The Whalers are a balanced team. They should pick the best player available. They have 4 empty forward spots and 2 empty defensemen spots. They must trust their scouting and pick the player they think will stay active.

Fun facts :

Biggest need for a forward:  The Scarecrows with a score of 52
Biggest need for a defenseman: Anaheim with a score of 57
Biggest need for a goalie: Armada with a score of 47
Team needing a forward with their first pick: 2
Team needing defense with their first pick : 3
Team needing a goalie with their first pick:  9
Available forward: 17
Available defenseman: 18
Available goalie : 3

Conclusion: It was a fun exercise to do. I think that the goalies are weighted too heavily in my model. In the next version of this ranking, I’ll try to weigh goalie differently. They seem to be a problem with the number of goalie in the junior. It’s due to their long career in the SHL.

The next version of my model would include the age of every player. I’ll reduce the score for the team that has last years players and increase the score of max-earning sophomores. This way the model will account for future needs.

In my next version, I’ll go player by player to identify the true inactive. In my model I only counted empty spots as inactive, it does not reflect the reality.

Lastly, I will update my ranking after the preseason, to see which team had the best off-season.
