I arrived in Detroit the day after I got picked and got welcomed to the team by the staff first. Got a tour through the facilities and after all of that was done I was able to meet the Coaches and GMs. Chat a bit with them. They wanted to show me the locker room themselves, so off we went. It's a very new facility, very modern! We entered the Locker room and I gotta say, it is an awesome feeling to see your name and number on your own locker... You just can't describe it! Some Teammates were around, they were just heading or coming back from the strength room. Everyone was very friendly and very excited. We kept going to finish off all the Media for the day. After that I went to the strength room and did a little work out. Gotta keep grinding at all times!

A player very first Draft in professional hockey is always a very special day and once that carries both a lot of anticipation and excitmenet but also uncertainty and nervousness. So when you finally end up hearing your name called then it is always a great relief to be able to go do a team that has shown that they want and appreciate you and if it was one that you also had your eyes on before the Draft, then even better. Luckily that was the case for Evan Winter, who ended up being drafted by the Colorado Raptors in the second half of the first round, the team that he has some family connections to as his father had also played there way back when he started his career in Juniors. So when Evan entered the locker room for the first time, he wasn't just greeted by a wave of warm hugs and handshakes, but also a picture of his dad during his own junior days which, aside from the terrible haircut by todays standards, looked remarkably alike. But ultimately the GMs and Coaches made it clear in their first talk with Evan that they want him to forget about this family connection as quickly as possibly so that he can start forming his own legacy without any extra expectations or unnecessary pressure so this is exactly what he is planning to do...

The team made me feel like I was at home right away in the locker room. There are a few people within the organization that also have connections to Finland, and they were thoughtful enough to put a small standing version of our flag in my locker. It was a small gesture that means a lot to me on a personal level. That is the sort of care and consideration that has greeted me at every turn within management and my new teammates alike.

I spent a lot of time in different locker rooms back home, but this feels completely different. The energy in this league is off the charts, and my teammates all seem to be as committed to improvement as I am. After most of the excitement wore off in the locker room, I got acquainted with the facilities and spoke with the staff. They've already been hard at work to help me shore up some of the weak spots in my game and improve on my strengths.

The entire draft experience was a whirlwind for me, but the players and management in Quebec were incredibly supportive and welcoming in the days after the draft. Stepping into the locker room for the first time felt like coming home, and I was blown away by all the activity. In just a few short days, I had invites to team activities, mentors stepping in to help me build a training plan for the upcoming season, and a constant stream of casual communication that really made the whole place come alive.

So far everyone’s been great, but I’ve been really impressed with the team’s general managers for organizing such a helpful environment. In the QCC facilities we get access to state of the art training programs that keep us on track with our season and career goals, personalized advice to improve our on-ice skills, and opportunities to get involved with keeping the team and the league running smoothly. I’ve already agreed to take on a scorekeeping job part-time to build on what I’ll be earning with my rookie contract, and that should help me build up career earnings to support the strongest training regimen possible during my time in the juniors. I’m thrilled to be here, and I’m already looking forward to the preseason!

It was a long flight to get myself out from the East coast of Canada and I was tired and just plain exhausted of all the people asking for my autograph. Being a rockstar is tough, especially when you're trying to double it up with your first year in the J, and trying to get yourself noticed for the SHL draft next year. Between training and practice, I had totally been burning it at both ends. Steeling myself a bit before entering the door, I take a deep breath and prepare for the onslaught of questions a rockstar like myself might get. When I walk in, nothing, no reaction except for brief lookups.

"Well it's kind of nice for people not to go nuts when I walk into the room" I laugh a little as I get some quizzical looks from my teammates.

"Who are you again?" one of them asks, not recognizing me immediately "oh right, you're that new draft pick from that shitty band. Your seats down there" I stand slightly shocked, my ego having taken a big hit.

Apart from that, the rest of practice went pretty well. Got some good reps in, but I really have to remember, that in this room, I'm just another rookie, and they're gonna give me no benefit for my hit songs.

I was a mascot for the Berserkers recent cup run and was therefore familiar with most of my teammates; I was very excited to join my friends in Newfoundland. I fully expected to be able to walk into the facilities and fit right in. However, the Zerks had this hilarious plan to ignore me and treat me as if I did not exist. I was saying hello to all my friends and they wouldn't even look up from what they were doing. I thought to myself that the prank would be short lived and I could get back to how things were during the playoffs. I thought wrong. Walking past the team lounge I saw they had what appeared to be a Rocket League tournament going on. In my head I had hoped they would allow me to join in on the fun, I know I'm terrible but I thought they might let me partake in our favourite pastime from the playoffs. I went to enter the room and the Coach said "sorry but you need to be on our team to be in this building" and had me escorted out. Currently contemplating retirement.

"The party don't start till I walk in !"
Said someone else who entered the room after I stumbled my way into the room awkwardly.
At first there was silence when they seen me: a new born Rookie with his heart on his sleeve.
I puffed my chest out in confidence as I explained how I got here. Quickly responding to questions
as if I came to an interview with some notes written on the back of my hand. One by one the room fills up
with the entire roster ready to start a new season and I began to see the connection. We are all here for one
thing. To be a team. I was honored to join the St. Louis Scarecrows and I believe as I settle in a little  more
each day t hat this could be something beautiful.

It was probably the feeling I was most excited for but at the same time I questioned it a little bit. Was I going to like where I was drafted to? What if I didn't? The wait was incredibly long, so when the draft finally came, it was super exciting. Once things got started I wasn't too sure what to expect but when Kelowna called my name at 10th overall I couldn't contain how happy I was. I had put in extremely hard work to get myself noticed and I'm determined to continue that work to ensure their pick was one they won't forget and maybe others will regret overlooking.

The first moments in the locker room were amazing. You take a look around and everything is just so crazy in that moment. They allowed us each to walk in alone and kind of experience the moment and it was unbelievable. You're looking around and you see all the stalls, the name plates, equipment, machines, the logos and finally your gaze lands on your own area with your name above it. It's pretty damn hard to put into words. Eventually once we all had our moment and the team was off the ice, they came in and welcomed all of us. Every member was incredibly welcoming, including management... after things died down we've all talked a lot, trained together and are getting pretty excited for the season..

What a draft it was, especially after falling way down to 26th overall after chatting with almost every team in juniors. Anyway, being taken by Maine was pretty awesome considering I was already in their LR as a guest. The first time I walked in as a member of the team, the first person to greet me was KaleSalad, the very person who drafted me. The rest of the team and other draftees were there as well to greet me, so it was a real humbling experience. I think the biggest memory I have from that day was the first gift that was given to me; my very own bag of wood chips. I would come to cherish this over the next couple of days, realizing that my first step to the pros had been taken. Now I keep that coveted bag of wood chips in my stall, right next to team captain Big Newff. Something tells me the next couple of seasons are going to be something really special.

It would be hard to say that the Anchorage Armada was a nice place for Red Kirkby, His father Rex played here for two seasons before beginning his long career in the SHL and his longtime family friend and agent Max Brannigan was the General Manager for thirteen seasons. The players were new however so it was nice for the team to organise an orientation day where he got to meet everyone before they had their first formal practice on the ice. There was a general excitement around the new players Lord Zomp and Red because this team had managed to get to five finals in the last six seasons but had only managed to win one of them. With two of the premier forwards in the draft going to the Armada there was a definite feeling that perhaps these two would be able to push them over that hump so that they could get their hands on another piece of silverware.

On draft night I was surrounded by some of my close friends and family members as we patiently awaited the next step of my career.  The scouts who had contacted me were throwing all kinds of buzzwords around that we don't have translations for in Germany.  As the first round came to a close, my mom brought me some Gluhwein to calm my nerves, my favorite winter drink and a tradition of mine before big games.  When I received a text message during the 2nd round from Raptors' staff, I was hopeful I had found my new home, and sure enough I had.  Upon arriving at team facilities I was welcomed by any and all staff on site.  Everyone was very welcoming, but when I entered the Locker Room it was a completely different story.  Everyone was in there, waiting to welcome me with open arms, and I instantly felt at home.  I'm still trying to figure out why everyone keeps referring to me as "doritomancer" but in terms of nicknames, it isn't the worst I've had teammates call me.
