(GRADED) Deep Dive #1 - The S58 QC Champs - where are they now?

(This post was last modified: 02-04-2022, 05:06 AM by Opera_Phantom.)

As the S58 Four Star Cup Finals began, the Quebec City Citadelles were out for revenge. QC squared up against the Anchorage Armada, the team that had eliminated them the previous season in a seven-game Conference Final showdown.

When you're motivated by payback, you don't show mercy, and the Cits didn't. They defended their home ice with a pair of 4-1 wins, then shut the Ships out in Game 3 to open up a 3-0 lead. An OT win in Game 4 was only consolation for the Alaskan side, as the Citadelles returned home and torpedoed any comeback efforts with a 6-0 home smackdown.

This being the junior league, turnover was inevitable, although the team's management has remained the same. Five seasons on, it's fun to take a look back and see: where are these guys now?

Big Boss - Retired

Boss was a rookie in S58, and mostly played on the lower lines, averaging less than eight and a half minutes of ice time on the season. He'd spend his whole career in the SMJHL, spending three more seasons with the Cits (and getting drafted by Buffalo in the process) before being traded to Newfoundland for a S63 3rd round pick. He played one season for the Berserkers before falling out of the league.

Bjorn Jakobsen - New England WolfPack  Wolfpack

The 6'11" absolute unit of a defender won the Cup in his final SMJHL game, getting the permanent callup to the SHL in S59 with the WolfPack. He's played there ever since, currently clocking the highest average ice time of his career.

Boris Petrov - Retired

The big, bruising goon that fought lots and could chip in about 15-20 points a season, the 6'5", 290 lb behemoth led the league in penalty minutes and hits that season. Unfortunately, he wasn't long for SHL; he went inactive not long after being drafted by the Barracuda.

Brian Davenport - Edmonton Blizzard  Blizzard

A recreate of former defender Eric Vanderberg, Davenport spent two more seasons getting seasoning with the Cits before being called up to the SHL with the Seattle Argonauts for S61. After two seasons in the Pacific Northwest, the winger was shipped to the Blizzard in a three-team deal.

Igor Petrov - Montreal Patriotes  Patriotes

Petrov tied for the team league in goals in the title season, and while he wasn't going to replicate the 17% shooting percentage, his final year in SMJHL saw him compensate with better playmaking to finish with a similar point total. He's spent all four of his SHL seasons with Montreal.

Jari Heikkinen - Retired

The fifth and final player of user Allegiant, Heikkinen was stapled to the top-four on the Citadelles' title run. He ended up one more season with Quebec before spending two seasons in the SHL with a rebuilding Manhattan team. Jari was inactive by that point, however, and fell out of the league.

Jasper Maximov - Baltimore Platoon  Platoon

S58 was Maximov's final season in the SMJHL, following up on an impressive 50 point S57 with a 44 point S58 from the blueline. After two seasons in Winnipeg, Jasper was shipped to the Platoon for a slew of picks, and has remained in Maryland ever since.

Jst Maro - Winnipeg Aurora  Aurora

From a player traded by Winnipeg to a Winnipeg lifer. Maro jumped to the SHL after the season and remains with the Aurora, though they have gone inactive.

Kappa Kappa - Retired

Tying with teammate Yuuto Kira Cloudera Jr. for the league lead with a sparkling +54 rating, Kappa was just a rookie when QC ringed. It was the first of four seasons with the Citadelles, including an impressive S61 where he put up 48 assists from the blueline. Kappa intended to retire prior to that season, but came out of retirement last-second. After his big year, Kappa was shipped to Maine for a S63 3rd round pick.

Kev Kevens - San Francisco Pride  pride

Another one whose final season in SMJHL was this one, Kevens immediately made the jump to the San Francisco Pride. So far it's good returns for the winger, a one-time SHL All-Star and two-time IIHF silver medalist with Canada who is closing in on 200 career points.

Mew Two - Baltimore Platoon  Platoon

69 points is pretty nice for a sophomore season, especially when it comes with a ring. Two more years of seasoning in QC followed before Mew Two joined the Platoon for S61, where they've already topped 100 points after less than three seasons.

Mikael Koskinen - Retired

Koskinen was one of five 50-point scorers for this balanced, deep QC team. Unfortunately, he fell off a cliff after that season, dropping from 56 points to 26 in S59. The numbers would remain much the same in his final SMJHL season, where he put up 27. He was drafted by San Francisco, but never played in the SHL and eventually retired.

Ryan Rieley - Retired

This was Rieley's final season in SMJHL. The former WolfPack first round pick was inactive by then and never played in SHL.

Shane Duffy Jr. - Winnipeg Aurora  Aurora

As an Ireland fan in soccer, allow me to approve the heck out of this name.

Duffy saw an expanded role in S59, and balled out. 56 and 54 point seasons showed that this player was SHL ready, and Winnipeg promoted the big winger to the pros for S62, where they remain today.

Tres Sombreros - Retired

Well...the player's retired, after one more season (a solid 51-point campaign) in QC and two in the SHL with Philadelphia and Winnipeg. The user has recreated as Tres Sombreros II...who just so happens to play for the current Citadelles!

William Salming - Seattle Argonauts  Argonauts

After the ring, Salming jumped right up to the SHL with the Argonauts, where they've been a consistent 25-30 point scorer that also logs PK minutes.

Yuuto Kira Cloudera Jr. - Toronto North Stars  Stars

As stated earlier, Cloudera tied for the league lead in plus minus that season, which made it pretty jarring when their S59 season saw them log a plus-minus of -10. That was Cloudera's last year in SMJHL, as they've been with the North Stars ever since.

Zdenko Beranek - Montreal Patriotes  Patriotes

The former #1 pick in the SMJHL draft, Beranek was a star for this Cits powerhouse. They followed up a 71 point S57 with a 65 point S58 and a title to conclude their junior career. Unfortunately, Beranek has not hit those heights in the SHL, where they started with Calgary, got dropped, then signed with Montreal as an inactive.

Mat Smith - Chicago Syndicate  syndicate

Smith might have the most impressive career of anyone on this list. A member of the Quad Gold Club, having won the S57 Challenge Cup (albeit as a depth goalie, hence him playing for QC in S58), the S58 Four Star Cup, an S62 IIHF Gold, and an S57 WJC Gold...owner of the best single season SV% in the current era of SHL (66 games in FHM) and second-best single season GAA...Smith has been fantastic again for the Syndicate this year, anchoring the league's best team GAA.

Tyler Ward - Edmonton Blizzard  Blizzard

Ward split time with Smith that year, and this keeper has found form in S63 with the Blizzard. While Senji Seteki has the volume of the minutes, Ward has put up a better GAA and slightly better SV%. A .919 is not bad at all despite the Blizzard's struggles this season.

Tyler Cannon - Retired

Cannon never played in the SHL. QC's third goalie in their championship run, he was brought back in S60 as an emergency signing before fading away for good.
