Mitchell van der Heijden has announced that he plans to test free agency. "I've enjoyed my time as a Steelhawk; it's been my home for a while, and I've played my best hockey in a Steelhawks uniform." says van der Heijden. "But as I age, I've started to realize that my playing time could be best spent on a younger player rather than an aging player like myself. Returning to Hamilton isn't out of the question, but I'd like to hear what teams can offer me."
van der Heijden then reflected on his age. "My one request is a multi-year deal. I'm winding my career down at this point, and this next contract I sign could be my last as an SHL player before I retire. I don't care if a team is rebuilding or not; I just want to go somewhere where I'll fit in and maybe be able to add some veteran leadership and savvy. I'm open to hearing any offer, although there are some teams I'd rather play for than others."
