S65 PT #4: Fitness? Yeah I'm Fitness Prompt in the Forum
#76

Now, Urquhart isn’t exactly a big guy, certainly not hockey big. So he works hard on being able to be strong enough to handle some of the leagues bigger players, and be quick enough to avoid being hit by these same big players! Also, Stamina is hugely important to his game. This means running, lots of running, as much as he hates it! He just plugs in a podcast or some music, and goes.
He’s also not a ‘social exerciser’. You see guys in pairs out there in gyms, screaming encouragement at each other. Well that is not for Daryl. If one of his teammates is around, he’s happy to spot for them or have them spot for him, just as long as they’re not shouting ‘come on, one more, you can do it!!!!!’ at him the whole time. That must be his ‘reserved’ British side coming out, although he would prefer you called him Scottish, than British….

Written Task: Your player has been asked to make a workout tape! Tell me about the exercises your player will show off to get their SHL pro body! What vibe will you go for in the videos? Is it serious? Is it funny? Are you all in on a huge budget? How do you want to release it? Are you starting a fitness Youtube channel, or maybe releasing it on VHS for the retro audience? Tell me all about how your player would tackle selling their own fitness program. Don't be afraid to get goofy with this one. (150+ words)

Jay Sink loves his fans, and Jay Sink's fans love him. As a result, his workout tape will be aimed at the Jay Sink superfans, who'd lap up anything he sold to them (not that Jay would ever abuse this, of course). The workout tape lacks substance, with Jay Sink just performing simple bodyweight exercises as well as crowd favourites like the bench press that look good on camera. The real selling point is Jay Sink's personality, and so this better fits a fitness TikTok account or Youtube channel. Before and after his exercises, Jay will regale the audience with stories about his personal life, how he feels as a British boy playing a foreign sport in front of the adoring Atlanta Inferno crowd, and generally leaning into the persona that has made him so lovable despite his relatively average performance on the ice in the SHL. Overseas fans see someone relatable preparing to suit up for a hockey game, while the American audience sees a mysterious, handsome British fellow with his shirt off. Throw in a few well-placed endorsements and you've got yourself a success.

PLAYER PROMPT

Over the course of his career, Karl has adapted and changed from a corner grinding, heavy net front presence to a finisher, to now hopefully not a liability. Age is playing a huge role, so it's more or less trying to play a style that can be useful to his team. Blocking more shots, giving the big guns a break and not getting scored on, maybe making some more hits, to tire out the other team. The best situations are when the opponents throw out line for line and Karl can get a shift against the opponents shut down line. Usually those lead to some great chances, as the platoon third line is still pretty damn well put together. These situations are great, they make Karl feel like a few years younger.
The training regiment has been a lot of endurance, flexibility, and strength - not to bulk, but to maintain. Nutrition has become a huge aspect and essentially makes or breaks the fitness. lots and lots of yoga.

A workout tape? Luka isn't really used to this, but he'll tell you what he does on most days off the ice. What Luka focuses on is mainly his core and arms. He does ab exercises, burpees, pushups and huge jogs every weekend to develop his lower body as well. Luka follows this routine due to a traditional Irish saying, 'Develop your core and everything else will develop'. More recently, he's started focusing on his arms, to increase his power on his shot and make his passes faster than bullet-speed. This is working pretty well and Luka is satisfied with this. All Luka needs now is intense defensive work. He knows that he is currently a liability on defense. To improve his mechanics on defense, Luka needs to work on his legs, which he currently is not. Luka is looking to hire a trainer for his legs. He has money, so contact him!

Living true to the Kirkby mantra, Red is obviously going to go with the go big or go home theme. Fireworks, pyrotechnics, dance group, strobe lights, dry ice. More or less the works. Everyone will of course be wearing skin tight lycra to show off their immaculately chisled adonis bodies. The catch though? This is not about working out physically at all, its about power drinking. The set will be a typical British pub but teched out with all the bells and whistles of your bog standard nightclub. Andy C will be playing bangers in the background while Red goes through the process of teaching the average punter how a professional hockey player drinks while they are out with their mates during the off season. Seeing as this off season with Anchorage is going to be another long one he has a lot of practice with chugging technique, funnels and towers of death. After just one session of following Kirkby's instructions you too can be a professional power drinker.

The STROMBody workout would be a collection of flexibility exercises intermixed with some cardio-resistance training.  Basically its just another Yoga/HIIT knock-off but with a Tampa Bay twist!  With mobility in mind, the fitness routines would be released on a subscription based application, but if you were a Tampa Bay Barracuda season ticket holder, you get it for free.  This way, you can get your routines everywhere you go.   Depending on how well sales go with the app, a follow-up full production dvd and youtube based enhanced workout would be released that would feature guest coaches as famous as Tom Fiddler, Dwight Knight and Elwulf Jericson.  To help promote the STROMBody fitness genere, there would be fitness challenges in all S66 home games during the penalty kill.  How many pushups/situps or how long can you plank while the 'Cuda try to hold off on the penalty kill?  Get a STROMBody now!

Sven Svenson is releasing his new freemium/subscription workout app custom designed in Silicon Valley. It will show basic stretching and body weight “prison” exercises to become healthy and fit with no workout equipment required. It will be both mobile and browser available and come with free 5-10 minute videos and longer videos for those that pay for a subscription. Subscription users will also get other benefits like free live classes streamed by Sven, a lottery to get to have a 1 min 30 second call with Sven, and a lottery for the winner and three friends to take Sven out to a night of drinking. Sven will also hire a competent social media manager to do productive things such as post short clips to various social media platforms, leave USBs with Sven’s app and other targeting software in various parking lots, aggressively interact with fans and naysayers, and generally be a good representative of Sven’s lifestyle workout app company – Body by Sven.

PLAYER PROMPT:

Well, Ruslan has been in the SHL since S54 and can certainly be called a veteran player. With regression doing it's utmost to suck the magic out of every player to lace them up, the good players are the ones who can fight it off best.

Zapo has a routine that he follows daily. Breaking from said routine is sub optimal at best and detrimental at worst. Whilst his play has, with the exception of 1 or 2 seasons never been stellar, he has been a consistent 30 point player and physical presence on the ice. Sparkplug has never had a season below 100 hits in his, at the moment 740 games in this league. Keeping both rigid strength through powerlifting with a variety of professionals in the offseason and normal team related workouts has largely been sighted as the secret behind keeping the Ukrainian fit for the league.

Balance is also quite key to Ruslan's style of play and he goes about maintaining that in a most unique way, Horseback riding. But it wouldn't be enough for him to just ride said horse, no. Zapo has to take it one steppe (See what i did there?) farther. Ruslan has spent time learning a lot about horsemanship and, in order to build better balance skills instead of oriental martial arts like most would go for, he has learnt a unique riding stance from Hungary where the rider stands astride 2 horses whilst holding the reins of a further 3 horses in some sort of a 5 horse chariot. This technique was taught to him by the Csikos. Hungarian Horse-Herdsman or Cowboys.

Prompt #1:

Aksel has watched that pikachu 80s video for the Detective Pikachu movie at least fifty times now, so he makes his workout video an exact remake, down to the movements and the loop. It takes a lot of work and a lot of editing, but after 10 hours he's gotten it perfect. He shows it to the PR team that'll be releasing the video and they hate it. Absolutely abhor it. Ask him to make a different video immediately. Aksel sourly stays up all night and makes a very passive aggressive video where he guts a fish and makes sure to flex his forearms and make many unnecessary arm movements. He does squats while it bakes. He sends the file to the team, who say it's good enough, and then he posts the pikachu video on his twitter. It gets a thousand views in an hour, and the team doesn't end up posting his fish video.

Player Prompt

I would not say that Shion Okamoto has that interesting of a fitness regimen. Well, first of all, Okamoto is a defenseman, so you know that he has got to get in some serious gains to be able to push people around, and you know, actually be able to defend everything. If you are a defenseman, you have got to be able to stand your ground, and sometimes get people out of the way, for example on the penalty kill when you need to get a guy out of your crease. So in order to be able to accomplish all of this out on the ice, you have got to make sure that you are actually training all parts of your body. So Okamoto makes sure to get the best trainers in all of Chicago to be able to train up for the long, grueling season. Because if he had to come up with his workout regimen himself, it would definitely not be very good.

Makrus will start a workout podcast so everyone can get into the kind of shape he is in. The podcast will be set to the song You're The Best Around by Joe Esposito. On the podcast Makrus will start the workout with couch sit-ups. Makrus does couch sit-ups every day and for an extra workout while contracting your abs at the high of the sit-up reach your arms out and grab a slice of pizza. Sit-up pizza down do this for 20 reps. Then we move on to stair running. For a fast stair workout you can use the elevator. Next will be a run. This is the part of the podcast with mostly just Makrus breathing hard while running. Since you can’t see anything that is happening all the instructions are pretty vague. Bonus find a slow running partner so you can keep up and look like you are much faster. Stay tuned for more podcast episodes with great advice to get in hockey player shape.

Creative Prompt

The workout tape will not take the form of any physical media, but will instead be broadcast live via a giant hologram in the sky to encourage everybody to participate at once. It will have an entertaining vibe to it but the actual workouts will be dull and serious. It will start with a simple plank, but while planking you must also sing a song of the nearest person's choosing. Next will be jumping jacks, but the hologram will spin in random directions. If it stomps on you then you're allowed to stop the exercise but everyone else has to keep going until it happens to line up. Next will be sprints but since the hologram is so large, it will run to a different city and you'll get someone else's giant hologram workout tape to follow (there are multiple SHLers who have participated in making these tapes in a series). The tape will just continue with these style of workouts where the exercise is simple and fundamental, but with some twist to always make it more enjoyable.
