a. An LAP team that was disappointed in a S63 finals loss is back again to face a TBB team that has been hungry for their chance in the entire FHM era. Who are you taking as a winner and why?

They're both good, but I'd take LAP as the winner in the end. They've had a great regular season (finishing first) and they made it to the finals two seasons ago so they "deserve" to win. Of course TBB battled through the East which is an achievement in itself, but I still see LAP win.

b. Tampa Bay’s top forwards have been absolute power houses on this run, totalling 102 points across their top 6. If you’re LA, how do you line-match against two lines that are on an absolute tear?

Since I'm not an expert at tactics, I'd say you can't really plan to match anything. You never know how TBB might change theirs for the playoffs and the regular season isn't the playoffs after all. For the playoffs you need a good team overall, not just some top forwards. You just hope for the best and FHM will do the rest I guess.

c. L.A.’s D pair of Kierkegaard and Kahnwald are maintaining a shocking 2 more GF/60 than GA/60, despite playing more than 21 minutes a game including PK time. If you’re Tampa Bay how do you get around these two? Hope to outlast them in endurance, or look to more depth scoring?

I could say the same as above. Those are the regular season numbers and who know if either team will stick to the same tactics in the playoffs. Not to forget they got those numbers partly also by playing against 'weaker' teams. They're only playing against one team in the finals. TBB just needs to try to score more.

d. TBB’s roster has racked up many more shot blocks (294) than LAP has (188). Do you see this as a good thing? Is this an iron willed team that’s willing to lay down their bodies to get the job done, or do you think it paints a picture of a team that can’t maintain possession and has to find another way to keep the puck out. Maybe a bit of both?

Blocking a lot of shots obviously helps Tampa's goalie, but it also means they're getting a lot more shots against in general which isn't a good thing. I would rather say they have to block so many shots because they can't take the puck away enough from the other team and that's what they should focus on. So yes, I'd go with the "can't maintain possession" statement.

I work for the FHM dev team and I’m giving you, sweet user, the ability to add any stat you want to our player build system. Footwork? Sure! Stink level? Why not! Stomach capacity? Ok… I guess so! Tell me what stat you want to add, and how you imagine it’ll affect the sim.

Caffeination: The ability to drink any caffeinated beverage (hot or cold) and make it affect your level of play. If you can deal with very 'strong' drinks (=lots of caffeine), your overall skill level will improve. Anything that contains caffeine works. You can 'train' your body to be able to consume drinks with lots of caffeine over time. Of course, my player is a pro at this skill already – long training - and it affects his overall game performance. It mostly can be seen in faster reaction times, but overall also the player's "alert level" during the game. The trick is also to be able to keep these levels up all game and not drop down again quickly. If your caffeination experience is low, you consume your caffeinated beverage just before the game starts, it takes some time for the caffeination level to reach its peak and then it quickly drops down again. Other people might call this a drug, but we don’t do that. ?

Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! We’ve had some federation shake-up this season that will surely lead to some interesting results. So who do you got? Who’s going to take it all this season and why?

What kind of Fed Head would I be if I didn't pick my own nation here to win? Exactly. Winland will win again, no doubt. They did it twice in the recent history at IIHF level and don't forget their success at the WJC. See a connection there? The kids are coming up to play for the senior team and bring their championship experience with them. Of course, there are always some changes with the other teams as well, but Winland will definitely be among the top teams again. Obviously there have been some nations that got new fed heads recently (Germany and Ireland managed to survive like this). While I believe that Ireland might not be that strong this year, Germany could be a secret contender given who their fed head is this season. Sweden, Canada and Japan are always scary so they should be among the favorites, too.

Congratulations, procrastinator!  Through your terrible time management skills, you’ve unlocked a special task! [TEAM] has won it all! Were the playoffs as you expected this year, or were there some surprises? Did anything stand out to you about this season’s final series?

Mostly having to do this due to the fact that I had zero milestones this season (I don't think that has ever happened to me), so technically I'm no procrastinator, thank you. Well, I did expect LAP to win when I wrote the rest of my CW and they did, so that wasn't really a surprise. I even had them in my predictions to win the CUP. Well, Tampa did their best I guess, they won two games. It wasn't one of those boring 4-0 finals, other than that I can't say much. I'm glad it went to a team that hasn't won a cup in such a long time.

I think taking the time to write things down helps me appreciate or understand them better, so maybe this could help you! Or you can just rant about your cat annoying you for 100 words and collect 2 TPE. I guess that works too.

I guess everything is going well for me at the moment. It's currently summer and I hate hot weather so that's that, but otherwise not much to complain about. Just waiting for winter again. My life is quite boring and I don't even have an annoying cat to write about. I still spend a little too much time doing SHL things even though I always tell myself to focus on life outside of that. IIHF is coming up so that's a little bit of extra, but luckily it's only for a short time every season and my player has been a lot more successful there than in the SHL anyway so it's fun to win medals.

1-TRIVIA (3TPE). Word: bagel

2(4tpe)

A)It is Los Angeles time and the league knows it. Despite Tampa bays resurgence, the Panthers seem like the most tenacious team and that they are ready to obtain that extra step to finally raise the cup. I honestly believe that no matter the opponent, it was theirs to take this year

B)Despite the high scoring of Tampa Bay, nothing is more vital for championship than a solid defense and thats what the Panthers bring to the game. Not only are the defensive pairings top tier, but the forqard lines have been good at generating defense and mainting pucks away from the goalie.

C)Going back to the other answer, it is all in the hands of Tampa Bays all pro top forwards. The two first lines will have to increase their tempo and pressure to be able to match the defensive juggernaut that is Los Angeles. While I believe they can do it, it is going to be hard to come up top against the Panthers scheme

D)This is always a hard stat to gauge, but I do believe it befits both side of the argument. Mainly how I see it is thaylt while the team struggles to maintain possession and control the puck, they are still good enough to ament their mistake and keep it out of net. This is a risky style but a lot of time it pays off. Good thing our league players seem to be made of steel and dont injure easily

6-(3tpe)
While there are a lot of stats that have the potential to be added, i personally would like to include an intelligence like stat, something like playbook smarts or even like faceoff set up play specialist, to create a new role where a player is able to execute the drawn up plays to perfection. The higher the stat line the more clean the plays come out of the faceoff. While it sounds like a silly stat, i think it could benefit certain play styles where the line is balanced and earning faceoffs is the priority to create these situations. As for a funny stat I would add a rebellious stat that goes up depending on your age and the team, which automatically makes the player harder to keep under control and behaves more erratically. This stat would be specially worse on goalies who would go out and play outside the crease more often.

Despite their woes, the German Federation managed to make the knockout stage of the previous tournament, shining a ray of hope in their near future. With the return of Tomen as a GM of the team, this new core is excited for the possibilities and looks like a promising dark horse nation for the upcoming tournaments. Despite a shaky record, they have snatched a couple of really important transfers that have bolstered the ranks of the federation, creating a sense of trust and progress with teammates and fans alike. It is also going to be interesting to see the new federations in action, and see how they shake up the standings and overall direction of the tournament. With all these changes it is my hope that more people get interested in the event and it receives the attention it deserves, to further grow the league and keep the interaction of members high during the offseason

a. I give the edge to Los Angeles in the finals. They have a more well-balanced roster, and some players that can take over a game at any moment. I think Tampa Bay is just missing a few pieces to get the job done this season. However, they are in very good position for the future and its only a matter of time before they will win it all.

b. You need to match Tampa Bay with a combination of speed and size. Speed to keep them concerned about transition offense, and size to help protect the net. Those two things can help offset the high scoring Tampa Bay offense. In addition, the opponent needs to take a no fear attitude when when facing a very talented top 6.

c. Tampa Bay needs to apply tons of pressure to offset the effective play of the great Los Angelese defense led by Kierkegaard and Kahnwald. Shooting on sight is a great way to get rebounds and second chances out on the ice. The more shots and redirections you can send to the front of the net, the more effective you sometimes can be.

d. Tampa Bay is willing to sacrifice their body for the game. No concern for injury enters their mind. If other teams would take suit, those franchises would gain the respect of fans all around. They want to see players give everything they can to win. GMs around the league should take note of the Tampa Bay way.

Make up an important character from SHL history. Tell me their name, what their job was, and why they’re important. Maybe they were an
eccentric team owner? An agent that represented half the league? Heck, make it a real person from SHL history if you want! I’m always down to hear cool old SHL stories!

The most famous person in the history of the SHL was Harold Diddlebock. He was one of the founders of the league. His bankroll allowed the formation of the Simulation Hockey League. Harold earned his fortune by striking oil in the backyard of a family farm that was owned by the Diddlebock's since the early 1700s. Harold brought his entrepreneurial spirit to sports by beginning as an agent for Tinkers, Evers, and Chance. He then became part owner of the Chicago Pelican Waterbirds, a semi professional cricket team out of Fargo, North Dakota. His experience in those venues gave him the idea of taking hockey to the next level. His idea for the SHL stemmed from his childhood fascination with sports statistics. He thought sports should be about money, and not necessarily fun. Diddlebock knew that money was to be made in every facet of the league. Merchandise, tickets, and much more. He even charged coaches to have the honor of being in charge of the early teams. A true visionary.

In the NHL there’s a well known superstition that any team that touches their conference championship trophy won’t win the Stanley Cup. Are there any superstitions like that in the SHL playoffs? If so, what are they? Where do they come from? Does your team or your player believe in them? Why or why not?

Just like any professional sports league, the SHL has its superstitions. One longstanding playoff tradition amongst the older guard of players in the SHL is to stay in a hotel even for home game days. Veteran players will swear by this practice, saying how it keeps them in a solid routine and mentally focuses them on the task at hand, which is of course to contend for the challenge cup. This is definitely a tradition that is slightly falling out of fashion with younger players across the board, however on teams with tightly structured locker rooms and veteran leadership, every member of the team might follow suit with the tradition and book themself into a hotel in their home city. The knowledge of which team or which players began this time honored tradition, but it perseveres in the SHL to this day thanks to the superstitions that can run rampant in the heads of professional hockey players. A mechanic/stat in FHM that i think would be really cool (although tough to implement) would be some sort of "Emotion" stat. tons of little things could effect the number, and a players stats such as aggression or discipline would effect the results of the emotion number at various thresholds. Outcomes could include things such as causing a fight, taking a bad penalty, and generally playing sloppy - if your stats were not well suited to playing with high emotions. if they were in fact suited for very passionate play, maybe it creates an intensity to your game, temporarily increasing stats to make your player more aggressive and have more stamina or something. it could carry over to different games against a rival that you have had high-tempered games against in the past. it would certainly be tough to implement in a way that makes people happy, but it's a fascinating concept! Congratulations, procrastinator!  Through your terrible time management skills, you’ve unlocked a special task! [TEAM] has won it all! Were the playoffs as you expected this year, or were there some surprises? Did anything stand out to you about this season’s final series?

The Tampa Bay Barracuda and Los Angeles Panthers fought valiantly in the Challenge Cup finals but ultimately it were the Panthers that were victorious. The Panthers had been on the cusp for a few seasons now so it was not too surprising to see them get the victory, and a nice change of pace after the Hamilton/Chicago/Texas domination. It would have been nice to see the Pride get a little further but losing to the eventual champs could be worse, I guess. So I guess I'm totally going for the obvious here but the video game boss you'd have to fight is an enormous lion that is for whatever reason wearing a jaunty purple sweater and shoots rainbows out of its mouth whenever it roars. How does one defeat this incredibly dashing yet fearsome lion? Well, lions are strong and brave but are perhaps lacking speed and dexterity so you would have to find a way to get to the back of the lion and shoot it in the butt (or hit it with a sword, I don't quite know what weaponry we have in this game). You don't want to hit it from the front because your attacks will just bounce off of its fearsome mane. How do you get to the back of it? Well, we'll probably have little blocks or something you can use to jump on and then jump over the lion. This game appears to be some sort of weird Sonic the Hedgehog ripoff except with weapons and lions and stuff so just think about it that way. Should be easy enough. (185 words.)

Alex decided to bust some moves and the dog ran up so he decided to get her involved in the action because, you know, everyone likes dogs, right? One of his teammates thought it was funny, started filming it, and put it up on Tiktok and you know it doesn't take much for stuff to go viral on that site, especially when there's dogs and dancing and music and all that good stuff. Alex's dance moves were okay and there was a dog involved so I'm sure it made him look good and charming and perhaps made a few San Francisco Pride fans that day. That's all you can hope for, right. Everyone likes fans. It was pretty adorable, not gonna lie. That's what the Internet needs right now. (160 words.)

3. Written, 3 TPE, Four Star (150 words min.)
Tell me what each of the four stars on the Four Star Cup stands for! Some will say it’s for each of the four divisions in the SMJHL, but you and I know better! What four things are embodied in the SMJHL’s greatest trophy?

The four stars correspond to the four classical elements of earth, fire, water, and wind.

Earth being the ground upon which we build ourselves up in pursuit of the fine sport known as hockey. While I know the game is played on ice that ice is seated in a stadium on land and that is part of why earth is represented here. It is also to represent the element of life in a way as without nurturing soil we would not be.

Fire for the fire inside the hearts of all the players in pursuit of it. The fire that drives us to risk everything that we are all in the pursuit of one glorious moment hoisting the trophy aloft. Also you could probably argue fire was involved in the forging process of the trophy itself so there is that.

Water as once frozen it is the surface upon which we play, and once drunk is the fuel that we sweat out as we go for the goal. Feel like this one is fairly obvious, although also feel the need to point out that the organic lifeforms that play are mostly water. Given that they also deserve recognition here. Really makes me think about the whole gingerbread man screaming about whether he is made of house or whether the house is made of flesh given we play on water and are essentially water.

Finally the wind beneath our wings and the air that we breathe is the fourth star of the four star cup. Without these fundamental forces of reality as described in the olden days we would not have hockey as we know it so I think that the four star cup is meant to honor them. Also may have been made by a wizard who knows!

I am here today to tell you the tale of a young person by the name of S.F. Ticotin without whom the league as we know it today could not exist. Now you may wonder how you have never heard of this person before and also what job they must have held to be so important that the league itself would not exist without them. The answers to that are intertwined as Ticotin was a simple driver of the ice resurfacers we know as Zambonis, and that may not seem important however it turned out to be more important than most would ever know.

Ticotin was well liked across the league as an able and swift driver of their ice resurfacer, however nothing noteworthy happened on account of it until a few years back. You see someone tried to bring down the SHL by uploading a self-replicating artificial intelligence into one of the ice resurfacers in the league. If they had succeeded it would have spread to all the other ice resurfacers which themselves would have gone violent with their awareness, however Ticotin's ice resurfacer was the one they started with thankfully for all of us. They had treated that machine so well that instead of going mad with power the ice resurfacer instead just proposed on the spot by carving a beautiful love poem into the ice for Ticotin whose acceptance allowed the SHL to make peace with the newly developed artificial intelligence. Thus the SHL was saved by the power of the love between a human and their machine.

The stat that I will add is one that I have seen in a number of games that I play as a big RPG fan and that stat is Luck. Now you might scratch your head at that as obviously luck is already a thing in terms of the sim being a glorified random number generator, however the key to making it a stat is that now it is a far more controlled random number generator. We use a 1-20 scale so am going to go with that as a rough guideline and say that it is similar to a die roll on a twenty-sided die. Essentially the 20 folk are going to perform in the top 5% according to their other attributes. This means that you could have someone who just rushes luck perform decently as low attribute folk sometimes do since they will be lucky as all sin, however in a battle between two players with comparable luck it will always be the other attributes that win out. Additionally beyond this I would increase reliance on other attributes so that luck acts more as a force multiplier than as a one true stat. Honestly this is a ridiculous idea, but it was the first one to come to me and honestly the idea of nobody getting sim shafted so long as everyone on the team has 10+ luck does amuse me.

Develop a video game boss fight based off of your team’s branding. Tell me what it looks like, what its strengths are, and most importantly– how you defeat it. ALTERNATIVELY for a graphic task, show me your player fighting the boss you’ve imagined.

I feel like The Battleborn is better suited to be a class of enemy, but given my gaming roots are firmly in RPGs I think I can still come up with something solid. First off the inspiration for this creature is the Minotaur so just take the head that is the Battleborn emblem and attach a ripped humanoid body underneath, and also for good measure give it a halberd as I think more fictional characters should use halberds.

Its strengths are that it is an absolute lightning bruiser of a boss who can compete in attack, defense, and speed. However its strength is also its weakness as this is a creature that does not have any magic attacks or special moves associated with it. The Battleborn is just a beast of the basics and so the way to defeat it is to make use of all the special tricks you have acquired by the time you reach it. Also do not be afraid to use the extensive number of healing items you can pick up on your way through the maze like dungeon it calls home as they were put there for good reason. Additionally approximately 20% of the game later Battlebabies can be encountered as regular enemies which use the same sprite colored baby blue.

Instead of asking you about other people this season, I figured I’d ask about you! How are you feeling? Take a couple of minutes to write about what’s going on in your life and how you’re feeling lately. I think taking the time to write things down helps me appreciate or understand them better, so maybe this could help you! Or you can just rant about your cat annoying you for 100 words and collect 2 TPE. I guess that works too.

This is going to be a big rant so feel free to ignore it for your own mental health as I am mostly here for the max earning. That said I am reminded of the introduction to Superman by Ra which is 'I'm not well and I think that I should tell you that I think I got the raw end of the deal' as that is how I feel at the moment. I am a chronically ill individual who has been sicker than usual the past month after being worse than usual pretty much the entire year to date anyway and who on top of dealing with all that woke up to around half a dozen pieces of really truly terrible news today. Today fucking sucks and there is no other way for me to say it. Sometimes days suck so you just have to accept that and carry on, but what makes this one so much worse is there is literally nothing I can do about so much of this bad news. It is all stuff that is out of my hands as one lone lady on this planet, and it is incredibly frustrating to me that I cannot do more to make the world a better place.

a. An LAP team that was disappointed in a S63 finals loss is back again to face a TBB team that has been hungry for their chance in the entire FHM era. Who are you taking as a winner and why?
I think I would take the Los Angeles Panthers if I was writing this before the Challenge Cup Finals started since I have not quite looked. The Lo0s Angeles Panthers dominated in a tough Western Conference and tough Pacific Division when you think about it. I know Tampa Bay Barracuda goes through the East but I think The Los Angeles Panthers take it. (63 Words)

b. Tampa Bay’s top forwards have been absolute power houses on this run, totalling 102 points across their top 6. If you’re LA, how do you line-match against two lines that are on an absolute tear?
I would match-up the top pair of the Los Angeles Panthers again the top line of the Tampa Bay Barracuda and then hope the next best pairing or more defensive pairing can keep the Tampa Bay Barracuda’s second line at bay. If they can keep the top line locked up and second line at bay the Los Angeles Panthers will find success, although doing that may be easier said than done. (70 Words)

I think the best case for the Tampa Bay Barracuda offense to get past Los Angeles defensive pairing of Kahnwald and Kierkegaard is to likely use speed and grind them out. They need to penetrate them along the boards and then they need some of their depth players to pick up the scoring. It will be a tough challenge for sure, but it may be the only way to get past those two big, strong Los Angeles Panthers Defenseman (79 Words)

I think it may be a sign that it could be unsustainable for the Tampa Bay Barracuda. I mean it is nice to have racked up the shots block and it makes a good story but that also beats down your players. It may also indicate that they lose the puck or do not have the puck on their sticks as often as their opponents. This may mean they give up a lot of opportunities that just don’t make it to the net which is troublesome. (80 Words)

In the NHL there’s a well known superstition that any team that touches their conference championship trophy won’t win the Stanley Cup. Are there any superstitions like that in the SHL playoffs? If so, what are they? Where do they come from? Does your team or your player believe in them? Why or why not?

The family and friends in a few locker rooms within the Simulation Hockey League have a tendency to start randomly shouting words or phrases to help their teams win. It may seem a bit strange and unconventional and most likely doesn’t change anything, but that does not stop SHL fans from joining in. It started off with mostly just the family and friends section doing it, but it has grown to outsiders joining in on the fun. Simulation Hockey League arenas get very loud now with people screaming and hollering random stuff like WEH, HODL and other things that make no sense and do not impact the game at all. Liam Slate used to believe in this ritual but does not really anymore as it is just superstitious and does not impact the game. I guess he may agree it could impact the game but most players in the league have really good mental and do not get bothered by such things. The fans do have fun with it, so overall Liam Slate is okay with it.

Maybe a bit of both?

a. I think I have to go with LAP here simply because they look to be the stronger team coming out of the stronger conference. The top four teams this season in points were LAP, Chicago, SFP, and Seattle. All four from the same conference. Despite that LAP had a huge lead on the rest of the league and is now coming off a 4 game to 2 series win over the second best team in the league. This team has wrecked all comers and it doesn't change here.
b. I don't think the Panthers have to do too much here or get fancy at all. Through the season the Panthers had the second best defense in the league, only rivaled by that of Chicago. More than that, Chicago had the leading offense throughout the regular season and we just watched the Panthers almost completely shut them down. Including a game six where they out shot Chicago three to one. Chicago couldn't find a gap and I'm not sure Tampa Bay will either.
c. I think the Tampa Bay is going to have to get real creative in this one. LAP has had one of the better defenses all season and even a high scoring juggernaut like Chicago struggled against them. I think you're going to have to find a way to outlast them. In the final game against Chicago, Chicago managed to put up more shots in the third than the other two quarters combined. They were completely blanketed at the start of the game, but eventually wore down the Panthers defense. Unfortunately they couldn't make any of those shots count. Tampa Bay is going to have to do a bit different in this one and make those third quarter opportunities find the net when they arise and the defense starts tiring.
d. I think TBB's amount of shot blocks is a testament to a team who knows how and when to buckle down when the puck gets to their side of the ice. This is a scrappy team who had one of the top two goal differentials in the league due to having a rather hard nosed defense. I think they know how to attack when the opponent is on offense and as they go against a Panthers team that wasn't great in scoring this season, I think it may be the one thing that gives TBB an edge in this match.

Tell me what each of the four stars on the Four Star Cup stands for! Some will say it’s for each of the four divisions in the SMJHL, but you and I know better! What four things are embodied in the SMJHL’s greatest trophy?

The four stars on the trophy are clearly a foreshadowing about the coming of the four horsemen of Nevada. It was written in the ancient times that four bright stars would arrive and dig the Nevada Battleborn out of the bottom of the league and climb to the top. The first star represents the moosiest moose Melvin Majestic-Moose. He was the first player drafted by the Battleborn in the prophesized class. The brightest upcoming star that had the whole league watching gim. He took the league by storm and the moment the Battleborn took him, they knew they had something special. He anchored their defense for many seasons and offered many behind the scenes insights to carry the team forward. Next up was the Willie. You know the Willie. Willie Miller. Despite saying you should never take a goalie early on, the shine of this star was far too bright to ever pass on. He was an impact on the team that no one could quantify on the ice. His spirit in the locker room and the ability to repeatedly crack up the locker room gave the Battleborn a soul that could carry them forward. Then in came the incredible wurmple known as Wing Wang. Wing Wang was the spirit of these stars and he brought them hope and energy for games. His star eventually dimmed thought and they lost him. Fear not though as that star was replaced by another as Nevada traded for a Penguin that helped solidify their defense. Next up was the eventual GM of Nevada, Connor Snooks. Though his light did not initially shine as bright as the others, he ultimately shined the brightest and the longest. He has had major, long standing impact on the Battleborn as a whole as he took to the management side of things and took over for a mostly IA GM to help Jess lead the team. He is still there today helping carry the team to a brighter future. Now with the prophecy realized, the Battleborn have risen and refuse to look back as the team continues to grow stronger and stronger and now have reached their first conference finals! Only time will tell if they finish this season, but as long as their stars shine wherever they are, the team will continue to improve until they are unstoppable.

With the absolute SCARIEST mascot in the entire SHL, Bully was made for this prompt. The Manhattan mascot is a bull, but there are no identifying markers of what kind of bull. So for this practice we're going to talk about the Chianina which is an Italian white bull that weighs 3500lbs and stands almost six feet tall. For this boss battle, we won't even have to scale this absolute monster up. His weapons are not only his obvious sharpened horns, but his surprisingly deadly hooves and massive weight to throw around. His moves would not only be quick, intimidating charges but also swift turns where he can use his weight to try and crush the player against obstacles. He could throw his head around to make use of his horns, kick behind him to cover his back if the player gets behind him, and attempt to trample at any turn. Although cliche, the way to beat this mammoth would be to use different objects to attempt to distract the bull. While he is busy charging a decoy, it would give the player a chance to get in a few blows and ultimately take him down over time by hamstringing him, slowing him, and then landing a final blow.

It is always the possession one. If you struggle to maintain possession of the puck, you end up having a lot more blocked shots. That's how the math works. That's not a great sign, because the tougher the opponent you meet, the better they get a controlling the puck and pinning you in your zone. Sure, toughness is there, but it comes down to being able to make that block and turn it the other way. They're not getting it back off the block, and that's a recipe for disaster.

Tell me what each of the four stars on the Four Star Cup stands for! Some will say it’s for each of the four divisions in the SMJHL, but you and I know better! What four things are embodied in the SMJHL’s greatest trophy?

So the four star cup, in all honesty, is for the original franchises of the then NWJHL. At the origin of the league, we didn't have many teams and certainly didn't have divisions. I remember being on the inaugural Brandon Blazers roster. Vancouver, Detroit, they were there too. It was just something that we didn't know would last or not and so no point in making a ton of teams.

Granted, that didn't last long. I believe in season 2 we started expanding and growing quickly. We exploded in popularity pretty quickly. A lot of it was people coming from the VHL and looking for a different experience, a more relaxed experience. You didn't have to write a point task every week in the SHL. You didn't need to do graphics or media constantly. You could earn money and use that to make your player better, and didn't have to put in all the extra time and effort to do something you may not be good at.

Over time, the league has changed. However, the four star cup has remained a steady reminder of the beginnings of the league. A league made to be fun and simple, a league where you could relax and do well, a league that was home to all people and personalities.

If so, what are they? Where do they come from? Does your team or your player believe in them? Why or why not?

I've never believed in this particular superstition. I get why it exists, people will talk themselves into anything. Jinxes are a thing because we believe we have some supreme power. It's honestly the most conceited thing you could do. To believe that you have the power, personally, to impact results of something without actually doing anything directly to effect it.

The power of the trophy is more so the power of mentality. It takes your head out of the game. It gives you an excuse for doing poorly, and then you convince yourself it's just how you are and you continue to dive into that poor play and the poor habits. To take a step back and recognize the world doesn't revolve around you, and you have the control over your own world and your own actions, that's a difficult thing. People believe in higher beings for a reason, it's a lot easier to excuse yourself if there's someone else pulling the strings and you're just a puppet of their desires.

This trophy stuff is just making up an excuse before you ever get there, it's the opposite of confidence while being insane conceit. You have to know that you're good enough to get there and you have to just keep doing your thing, and everything about your play is solely on you, and your teammates is solely on them. There is nothing else forcing you to do anything. So touch the damn thing, celebrate, be happy, and keep pushing yourself forward.

Heck, make it a real person from SHL history if you want! I’m always down to hear cool old SHL stories!

At this point, I don't know who people know about. Do they know JJ Krever? He was one of the original administrators on the website, even though he may not have been a commissioner, he was a key decision maker in the early seasons. He was the one who created the Toronto North Stars, went the longest time without ever winning a playoff series, and could be a fascinating case study of the SHL.

Do people know the Jack Crasher story and the reason for the rule? The man who said he was going to get a haircut, but he'll accept the contract when he gets back to every team in the league. And then when we left that website, he posted to say he was back from his haircut and ready to make a decision, like the true troll he was.

People probably would never know about munk or sarmo. Duddy was an interesting character as well. Witz was annoying as all hell, and would throw hands the moment you said anything that he didn't agree with. It was a battlefield of personalities. Trolls like stud were prevalent, but they were entertaining as hell.

I think one of the more interesting ones is Dylan, who became an owner when the league moved to jcink. He was the one who created the jcink site and therefore was "Member #1" and automatically the admin. Well, nobody could take that from him except for him. He was some kid who liked having some power and forced them to name him an owner and refused to relinquish his admin powers, even though to my knowledge he never used them. It was just an annoyance, and he'd just post about his sock collection and his love of popular rap music.

There could be so many options, but I seem to recall a hidden attribute for mental toughness being available and the debate of whether we include that or not. Ultimately, it isn't something that makes sense to add, but it is something that would be fun to have. Especially for goaltenders who have a more limited opportunity to have their TPE matter, if we worked mental toughness into a system similar to the ISFL's traits category where you have to spend like 100+ TPE for this special ability could be a fun way to utilize their TPE in a way that actually impacts their ability.

I believe it was a 1-5 scale, so if everyone starts at a 1 and is basically a headcase, then as they get more TPE build up to a 3 and are now able to handle the big moments but will struggle sometimes and eventually you get up to a 5, that's an exciting build up of learning mental acuity and getting accustomed to the moment.

Again, it makes no sense ultimately since it would be too costly to implement in some ways, but with how little goalies truly matter and the TPE they apply matters, it's a way to give them power over the success of their builds. I know why it would never work, I just enjoy it.

a. I would be on the Panthers in this situation. Coming that close and falling short creates an insatiable hunger that a long drought cannot replicate. Being so close you can smell it leaves your belly rumbling and your mouth watering; being nowhere near it leaves you weak and seeing illusions of what you can only imagine is real.

b. I don't think you need to line match; you earned your spot in the finals and you don't need to alter your identity at this point. Play your game your way and only if that fails you do you start to make alterations. If you're good enough to go to the finals, you're deep enough to match anyone.

c. Does one ever game-plan around 2 defenders? While those two players are exceptional, I think you have to stick to your guns and play the systems that got you here. Maybe you mix in some dump and chase and bang some bodies below the goal line to make them think twice about playing the puck.

d. I always liked the analogy, it's like having a room with rats. If you're setting the odd trap and catching them intermittently then you're doing fine. If you are running out of traps, you have a bigger problem. Sure, laying your body on the line is good but it also takes a toll in a long playoffs and you have to be wary.

The four stars clearly stand for wheel, dangle, snipe, and celly boys. Just kidding, sort of... The first star stands for skating, as ice hockey cannot exist without skating. It is the skill every player must master if they wish to make it as a professional player in the SHL. The second star represents both dangle and snipe for it is your prowess with the puck on your stick. The ability to weave in and out of traffic and the talent for firing the puck are quite important. The 3rd star is celly-brations or teamwork in other words. Hockey is a team sport and your ability to work with and support your fellow team members is a fundamental skill required for success. The final and most important star is the cerebral star. Your ability to think and process information is what separates the good from the great. If you can think the game at a high rate and process the play faster than your opponents, there is nothing that can hold you back.

You might not know it but I used to be teammates with Rick Mothereffing James. You might think a skinny elderly man can't skate well enough to be a professional but you would be surprised. I met Rick in the Young Stars tournament where we both played for the Outlaws. Mr. James was a great person to be around and I was thoroughly pleased when we both got drafted by the Vancouver Whalers. We had a few good seasons in the J but then it was time for us to go our own ways. I was drafted by Hamilton and Rick got selected by Texas. I thought that would be the last time I played with the good old boy but as luck would have it, I got traded to Texas and we both finished our careers there. We managed to win a cup in S36 and handing that hardware off to Rick James was almost as good as winning the cup again.

Tell me what each of the four stars on the Four Star Cup stands for! Some will say it’s for each of the four divisions in the SMJHL, but you and I know better! What four things are embodied in the SMJHL’s greatest trophy?

Appropriately, each star of the Four Star Cup stands for one of the aspects of any player that wishes to make it out of the Junior league and into the SHL.
The first star stands for Perseverance, which is necessary to make it through the grueling training that awaits any player wanting to reach their full potential.
The second star is Patience, as there’s not always a ready spot for you when you think you most deserve it. Sometimes your fate is not in your control, and that can be difficult for a younger player to come to terms with.
The third star is Talent, which is not only god-given but can also be honed by dedication and tireless effort.
And finally, perhaps most importantly, the fourth star stands for Openmindedness, which is essential for any player that wants to reach their highest level. You need to be open to teaching if you want to exceed your limit, as there are many things people have to teach you, and if you think you know it all before hitting the big leagues you are going to have a bad time.

Make up an important character from SHL history. Tell me their name, what their job was, and why they’re important. Maybe they were an eccentric team owner? An agent that represented half the league? Heck, make it a real person from SHL history if you want! I’m always down to hear cool old SHL stories!

A lot of people think the Challenge Cup is named after the grueling task of winning the trophy, but in reality it’s named after the man who provided the league the trophy nearly seventy years ago: Clarence Challenge, an oil tycoon who had an affinity for ice hockey and a fierce rivalry with Andrew Carnegie.
Challenge was actually the founder of one of the founding SHL teams: the Minnesota Challengers. Of course, they would eventually be renamed the Chiefs in order to distance themselves from any sense of impropriety being connected to one of the league’s founders. And they would eventually be renamed the Monarchs for obvious reasons after that.
Clarence Challenge himself was an accentric man, one with a disdain for clothing of all kinds and a love of pickled eggs. In fact, once he donated the Challenge Cup to the league, teams that won it refused to physically handle it for five seasons until the league office decided to hose it down and send it in for deep cleaning in order to purge it of its pickled egg smell.

Congratulations, procrastinator!  Through your terrible time management skills, you’ve unlocked a special task! [TEAM] has won it all! Were the playoffs as you expected this year, or were there some surprises? Did anything stand out to you about this season’s final series?

The Los Angeles Panthers have won the Challenge cup, and I honestly feel like it's a great thing. They're a well-run organization and deserve the success, they have a few users over there that I really like (and I'm ecstatic to see Lane go out with a Cup), and for the first time in several hundred years the winners aren't one of Hamilton, Buffalo, Texas, or Chicago. To that end, I would have been fine with Tampa Bay winning it all given what I've said already applies to them as well. I'm not surprised that LA won, though I am shocked that Hamilton managed to get out of the first round again with one of the worst rosters TPE wise. I'm also surprised that we lost in the first round to Atlanta, who seem to have our (BAP) number right now.

Quote:23. Written, 2 TPE, How Are You? (100 words min.)

I'm doing decently well right now. My health is mostly OK and my family is fine, though there is the matter of the cost of living increases we're experiencing now kicking my ass along with everyone else's.
In terms of recreation, I'm actually about to start a new DnD campaign as the DM. We're running through Tomb of Annihilation, and it's actually the first time I'm DMing a campaign based on an existing setting and adventure module: the only other one I've run was homebrew, albeit using 5E game rules so there's no change there. I'm excited to start, and I've enjoyed reading up on the adventure in preparation. DMing can be a big challenge but it's very rewarding, I've found.

Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! We’ve had some federation shake-up this season that will surely lead to some interesting results. So who do you got? Who’s going to take it all this season and why?

Regular season and regular forecasts. If we look back at a time when I'm starting to make predictions at all, then we can see that times have changed and a lot of teams that haven't been among those strongest in the past have already improved their chances of medals much more. We can certainly call Finnish, Swedish, Canadian and US hockey favorites as favourites. If we look at the second end of the table, there could also be a fierce fight, as usual in recent seasons there will certainly be Germany, Austria, Russia, and also certainly Latvia, which showed that Latvia's future is also bright. I have the honour of leading the Latvian favorites and I was delighted to be able to fight the great hockey countries in the last tournament, and we almost got into the Play-Off games. I hope it will continue and we will be much stronger this year. Good luck to the others too! (158 words)

Choose a dish from your IIHF federation and tell me about it! Does your player make it? A member of their family? What’s special about it to you?

The best Latvian food in the summer is definitely cucumbers, tomatoes and cream. It's like an additive for fried potatoes. I think you all already know that Latvians are proper potato eaters. Believe me, everyone has to try this food. Maybe an athlete shouldn't take this food away, because it's relatively heavy, but it's definitely time to enjoy it during summer vacation. We should still have some of the Latvian sweet food, which is also fairly bold, but which does not want to eat sweet food. The Latvian kitchen is full of a variety of dishes to hang on with. That's why it's hard to name a lot of different specific types of dishes. (114 words)

17. Written, 3 TPE, A Few Of Your Favourite Things (150 words min.)
Last season I asked why you chose your IIHF country, and this is somewhat similar but I’m specifically asking for non-hockey reasons now. What are some of your favourite things about the country your player is from? Are there special sights? Cities? Maybe it’s food? All of the above? Do a little research on the country and tell me what you like!

I just adore my country, even without hockey, it seems to me that Latvia is a very beautiful country and has a good future, just needs hard and lasting work to achieve good results. It's just like sports for Latvian players, always needs a great and hard job for someone to follow us. Looking at the sights of nature, we are a rich country, we have a lot of woodland and these places look fabulous during the autumn. Even though the winters are no longer the same and there is sometimes no supply, the nature of this is spoiling us, and sometimes we simply cannot assess it. The special features of food are excellent, too, and there are a lot of tasty Latvian national food to be tasted for every tourist. If there is a desire to become acquainted with Latvian culture in detail, it can be done peacefully on the Internet. Many do not appreciate us and confuse us with Russia, but it is not, we are an independent nation with great ambitions throughout it. (176 words)

4. Written, 3 TPE, Do You Touch It? (150 words min.)
In the NHL there’s a well known superstition that any team that touches their conference championship trophy won’t win the Stanley Cup. Are there any superstitions like that in the SHL playoffs? If so, what are they? Where do they come from? Does your team or your player believe in them? Why or why not?

I know about such superstitions, but I think it's all just figured out, and each can go by its own methods. I think a pretty good example is this moment when the Colorado team touched this cup and is now playing successfully in the NHL finals. I think we in the team of ourselves would certainly share our thoughts, because the Europeans would certainly have much less faith in the matter, but the Canadian, American hockey players would certainly take this much more seriously, and I think if the majority of the team did not want to do it, then we would have made concessions. We are actually a team and decisions need to be taken together for everyone, not individually. I haven't enjoyed it myself, because I've never won my conference, but it's all ahead, I'm not going to stop with the achievements and hope to play for some more time. We can still achieve high results. (158 words)
