As time and seasons have passed, we have seen our fair share of talented, professional and insightful hockey writers, bloggers and analysts that keep us in the loop of everything going on in professional hockey. From Rick Westhead to Bob McKenzie, the hockey world is blessed with quality information at all times and for all reasons.

With absolutely no intent of putting any of these talented people to shame, one reporter from The Hockey News has recently taken all of the spotlight in the hockey writing world with some quality non-quality articles, redefining what it is to write about the sport we all love. Let’s take a few moments to discuss Pulitzer nominee Tukin Boutus.

From humble beginnings deep into wild Nebraska, Tukin took to writing from his time spent with his grandmother, during which they would initiate pen pal type relationships with death-row inmates, a troubling yet rewarding time in Tukin’s life as he learned not to get attached to subjects and stories, which enabled him in covering tough stories fully, in becoming what he calls a guardian of the truth.

Tukin made a splashing debut in the journaling world while working for his high school paper as he was able to uncover a scandalous affair between the head principal and the school’s mascot, the dung beetle. He was tipped off after overhearing a conversation about the nefarious endeavor between the school’s principal and a colleague and investigated until all the facts were brought to life. Messy divorce aside, Tukin’s work brought harmony and peace back to his small rural community. Though his investigative journalist interest was strong, coverage of the dung beetle athletics was the real bright spot in his young days as he covered anything and everything, from the freshman dart club’s state championship push where they would fall to the Ord Chanticleer in a barnburner of a final matchup to the infamous National High School Championship of the lawn hockey team.

It is while covering the latter that he found a true love for the sport of hockey, especially when he figured out what real hockey was. He started following now legends of the game, Lemieux, Jagr, Selanne, Stevens, Hasek and many more. He was glued to the television when hockey was on, trying to fill his head with advanced statistics and storylines, and writing whenever he had a chance to showcase his talents which he put to good use writing about his new found passion.

From his brilliant coverage, hour by hour, moment by moment of Derek Martin’s draft night, to unveiling critical information such as an episode of a minor drinking alcohol during the previous SMJHL draft, Tukin Boutus’ work ethic knows no limits, has no limits. He is relentless in his pursuit for the truth, for ways in which he can defend the sanctity of the sport of Hockey. This game into light and became evident when he put his life on the line to uncover a historical, monumental scandal, a piece for which he has been nominated for the Pulitzer, the Mont-Saint-Grégoire Apple scandal.

Although he has a relatively young career and is only a recent figure in the SHL landscape, despite his already established importance, Tukin Boutus has much more in the pipeline, a lot more to give to the hockey community. Be on the lookout, folks!
