The Maine Timber are a team coming off their first Four Star Cup. There was fear in the organization that the team might take a step back after losing one of their top defenders in Mathew Mayhem who was called up early this season to NOLA. They also lost Mando Loriand who led their team in scoring last season and Iam Downski who is the all time leader in goals, assists and points for the Maine Timber. As you can see the Timber took a huge blow throughout their line up losing these players, so what is the magic formula that has them sitting 2nd place in the entire league and 1st in their division? Let’s break that down.

The depth from last season has taken another step in their development. When looking through the rosters I am looking at players like Daniel Swift and Cale Salad who were more of a secondary scoring duo for this team last season. With more responsibility these players are flourishing and this is a big reason why the Timber are having so much success. Both players are well above a point per game where as both were well below a point per game last season. They had a chance to learn how to play like champions on their way to a cup last season and are clearly ready to take this team to another level despite the big losses this team endured in the locker room.

Another player who was a big piece of their run last season was Nibbles the Squirrel who finished 2nd in team scoring with 73 points in 66 games. He remains above a point per game this season and with another season under his belt we can expect Nibbles be a big part of this teams success again this season. He will be a mentor for the younger players on the team and will be able to teach them what it takes to become a championship contender.

Lastly, a big part of their success this season has to be the current depth on the team. There are a number of second year players who are looking to take the next step in their development. Some of these players are Barefoot Sugars, Heath Nicols and Toasty. All of which won a championship in their first season and now have a chance to bring that experience into their second seasons to try and replicate the success of their first. They can help teach some of first year players like Peter Tingle and Edzus Ozolins the way they need to play in order to get back to the Four Stars Cup.

From top to bottom this team is full of championship pedigree. They have a great mix of top end players and young depth players. Maine has been doing a good job bringing in new high end prospects as their players age out and move up to the SHL. This is a recipe for long term success and over the next few seasons I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Maine Timber bring home another Four Stars Cup.
