Happening just a few season ago, players from the S67 draft are about to enter their final season in the J (unless they got called up early that is), so I thought it would be neat to go back and see if the first round draft order would have stayed the same, or if it would have changed given the players body of work since then.
1: Minnesota Monarchs- Original Pick: Nevek Kove New Pick: Nevek Kove (TPE rank: 5) Hard to argue with this pick. Good D is hard to find (phrasing), but Kove delivers. A lock down defender these past few seasons in the SMJHL, the Monarchs will no doubt be pleased with Kove’s development, and look forward to their arrival in the SHL. 2: Edmonton Blizzard - Original Pick: Jack St. Clair New Pick: Paul Peterson (TPE rank: 1) In this redraft, the Blizzard end up taking a different center in Paul Peterson. Nothing against St. Clair who has been very solid for Quebec, but Peterson has just been a bit better across the board. Both players should pan out solidly, but Edmonton takes the one who has looked better so far. 3: Baltimore Platoon - Original Pick: Daniel Swift New Pick: Alexi Piastri (TPE Rank: 7) With the unfortunate early retirement of Swift, in this redraft the Platoon select a different RW in Alexi Piastri. You may know him as the player who led the J in goals and points this past season. This guy is good, and folks in Baltimore would love to have him around. 4: Los Angeles Panthers - Original Pick: Adam Prpich New Pick: Jack St. Clair (TPE Rank 4) With Peterson jumping up the ranks, the Panthers elect to take true center Jack St. Clair instead of goalie turned center Adam Prpich. Similar to how Peterson made the jump over St. Clair, St. Clair makes the jump over Prpich by virtue of having better numbers across the board. 5: Hamilton Steelhawks - Original Pick: Bobby McGinnis New Pick: Bruno Tooyo (TPE Rank: 10) McGinnis is hurt by playing on a bad team. While the Armada aren’t exactly elite, Tooyo has put up numbers for them while McGinnis has had to struggle with trying to carry a bad Great Falls team. With Tooyo’s rise, the Steelhawks select him in this redraft. 6: Texas Renegades - Original Pick: Hodor New Pick: Hodor (TPE Rank: 8) In my redraft, I almost had the Rengades opt to go for a bit more dynamic RD in Antonio Flusso, but decided to stick with Hodor. Everything’s bigger in Texas, so why not add the 7’ 2” 300 lb tank to their defense? Hodor isn’t the most dynamic player, but he will block shots out the wazoo and generally help lock things down. Good pick. 7: Calgary Dragons - Original Pick: Axel Kirby New Pick: Axel Kirby (TPE Rank: 14) A case could be made to select Kirby’s teammate KyIe Murray in this position as both RWs have played quite well, but clearly the Dragon’s saw something they like In Kirby in the original draft. For that reason, and the fact that Kirby has more TPE than Murray. 8: Philadelphia Forge - Original Pick: Antonio Flusso New Pick: Antonio Flusso (TPE Rank:9) An extremely dynamic RD, Flusso is a steal at 9. Philly fans are ecstatic to still pick him up in the redraft. 9: Winnipeg Aurora - Original Pick: Paul Peterson New Pick: Adam Prpich (TPE Rank: 2) The goalie turned center finally comes off the board, and the Aurora will be pleased to have this pick. Prpich has heaps of potentialand is continuing to improve their game as a center. Getting that kind of talent at pick 9 is excellent value. 10: New England Wolfpack (via MAN) - Original Pick: Sean Davies New Pick: Chuchichäschtli Zopf (TPE Rank: 18) Both Zopf and Davies would be solid picks here. I give the slight edge to Zopf, who has more points and is a takeaway machine. Davies brings more physicality and shot blocking, but I don’t feel as though it offsets the bonus points Zopf brings. The pack would be happy to bick up a solid 2-way D for the future. 11: Minnesota Monarchs (via MTL) - Original Pick: Brendan Laroux New Pick: Brendan Laroux (TPE Rank: 24) The Monarchs wanted an offensive minded LD, and they got it with Laroux. No need to change anything up in the redraft 12: Baltimore Platoon (via SFP) - Original Pick: Isaac Forty-One New Pick: Isaac Forty-One Isaac Forty-One blocks a load of shots and is an all around solid RD. Similar to the last pick I don’t see any reason for the Platoon to deviate from the original timeline 13: Tampa Bay Barracuda - Original Pick: Bohdan Jarovsky New Pick: Conner McKeil (TPE Rank: 25) Jarovky brings a lot of hits and plenty of scoring that McKeil cannot match, but McKeil brings elite faceoff skills, as well as a more well rounded defensive game, chipping in more take aways and blocked shits than Jarovsky. He will serve Tampa well. 14: New England Wolfpack - Original Pick: Jacques Hammer New Pick: Jacques Hammer (TPE Rank: 3) The Wolfpack get their guy. They were very high on him in the original draft and their faith has been rewarded. Very promising player that they would be more than pleased to take again. 15: Tampa Bay Barracuda (via NOLA) - Original Pick: Bruno Tooyo New Pick: Bobby McGinnis (TPE Rank: 9) With Tooyo and Hammer off the board, the Barracuda select arguably the best remaining LW in McGinnis. While buried on a bad GFG team, McGinnis is still a very good player with a lot of potential. 16: Tampa Bay Barracuda - Original Pick: Connor McKeil New Pick: Bohdan Jarovsky (TPE Rank: 29) In a little switcheroo of the original draft, McKeil and Jarovsky swap places, giving the Barracuda strong center corps for the future. 17: Minnesota Monarchs (via BUF) - Original Pick: Brennan Kennedy III New Pick: Pawter Meowski (TPE Rank: 20) The Monarchs look to add a different LW in the redraft, opting to select Pawter Meowski over Kennedy III. Meowski has been a solid all around LW for the Timber and has improved each season. They cap off a solid first round of picks for the Monarchs 18: Texas Renegades (via CHI) - Original Pick: Pawter Meowski New Pick: Trap Zelenock (TPE Rank: 34) With Meowski of the board in this redraft, the Renegades select Trap Zelenock. A great goal scorer with some solid defensive play, the Renegades won’t feel too hard done missing out on Meowski. 19: Minnesota Monarchs (via SEA) - Original Pick: Alexi Piastri New Pick: KyIe Murray (TPE Rank: 23) As mentioned previously, Murray could arguably have gone seventh to Calgary, but was edged by his teammate Axel Kirby. They become the next RW off the board at 19. Minnesota will be happy to welcome them to the squad. Atlanta Inferno - Original Pick: Potential Spam New Pick: Sean Davies (TPE Rank: 17) Spam has been a defensive-minded LD for the Kelowna Knights, but Davies has been just a touch better for the Armada, with generally better stats across the board. This is not a flashy pick for the Inferno, but they do pick up their LD of the future in Davies. So there it is. My redraft of the S67 SHL Draft. Pretty rough I know, and there’s almost certainly some things I overlooked, but I had fun making this! Thanks for reading! : Drafted 16th Overall by New England
