(GRADED) Deep Dive #2 - Can the Detroit Falcons forge a Dynasty?

With the regular season over and the tables set for the playoffs, everyone and their mother knows who the favourites are coming into the postseason. The Detroit Falcons have had an impressive year and are looking to defend the title of Four Star Cup champions. In fact, they are trying to go back-to-back and win their 3rd cup in 5 years. This would create the Falcons dynasty cementing them in SMJHL as one of the greatest teams that have ever hit the ice. Fun fact: the most recent dynasty was the Newfoundland Berserkers from S60 to S64, winning 4 cups in 5 years. With the close of the Berserker’s dynasty, they were dethroned by none other than the Detroit Falcons, who claimed the throne and started building towards dynastic dreams in season 65. In this deep dive, we will breakdown some key players to watch from the Detroit Falcons in these playoffs.

The first thing that jumps out to you about the Falcons line up, is that there doesn’t seem to be any glaring weaknesses. Case and point, they roll 3 lines deep, and each line is as unrelenting as the last. There are very few teams in the league that can say they have 3 players that are above a point per game, and all 3 players play on different lines. I’m going to let that sink in, how crazy is that?! All 3, Left Wingers, on 3 separate lines, @JustAnotherHockeyFan Bohdan Jarovsky, @MrPrime Bastien Primeau, and @Ferda Billy Herrington. This means you CAN NOT at any moment while playing against Detroit let up or have an off night. Any of the 3 forward lines will make you pay if you are not careful.

In Defense, believe it or not, it is the exact same story. The trio of @Rangerjase Nash Topalo, @Shmurph Brendan Laroux, and @stein Cob Corning doubled down on the offensive philosophy. Rolling 3 pairings deep with each player anchoring its own line. Each of these D-men are an offensive threat, outscoring and outplaying most of the forwards in the league. If you are trying to out gun this team, you had better make sure that you have brought enough ammunition to the fight. The rocks in the defense corps are Nathan Meagher, and The Terrence. If the forwards are having an off night, you can count on these 2 to shut the door on any opportunities that may come their way. @Atox Nathan Meagher leads the team with 179 blocked shots, and @TwoSocks The Terrence with 193 hits, good for 2nd in the league. Oh did I mention, Bohdan Jarovsky AND Billy Herrington are 3rd and 4th in hits as well with 178 and 175 respectively.

Now onto the Goaltenders, the tandem of @Lumosityfan Jeff Newman and Swiss Cheese has been stellar all year. With Jeff Newman carrying the brunt of the workload, he has had an amazing campaign this year, posting a 40-15-3 record and league leading 13 shutouts. Meanwhile, Swiss Cheese, the irony is not lost on me, has been perfect in regulation with nothing getting past his holey cheese with a 7-0-1 record. Suffice to say that the work is probably a little easier with such a strong group playing in front of you, so the playoffs may be the real test for these backstoppers. The tandem’s save percentage is not that of high caliber teams, so this might be the chink in the armour of the mighty Falcons.

All in all, barring any catastrophic meltdown by the strong offence, the stable defense, and dependable goaltending, the Detroit Falcons are primed to go for another deep cup run again. The league will be watching with anticipation as game 1 of the playoffs are slated for tonight. We all want to witness a dynasty in the making, however, there is a little part of us all that want to see the Falcons fall from grace so that their team can claim the throne for themselves.

Season 69 has been a wild season so far, the playoffs will be no different. Will we see a dynasty forged and legends made, or will we see the rise of another team triumph over the goliath and claim the coveted Four Star cup.

(696 words nice)

P.S. @bbjygm Hodor at RD is a defensive machine. His team leading +/- at +41 is the top of the team and tied for 1st in the league. He is the only D to be in the top 5 for +/- in the league. This is impressive especially considering the high scoring affairs the SMJHL is trending towards. He has been a staple on the blue line for every team he's played on, and after joining Detroit in S69 (nice), he bolsters an already terrifying defense for the Falcons.
