After the SHL Draft comes to a close it is commonplace to see redraft media so I wanted to take a stab at it. When looking into the draftees, the SHL GMs mostly look into player builds, user earning, and user character… but I wanted to base my redraft off of something that may be slightly overlooked, raw performance. I didn’t want to just give you a list of who scored the most, rather take a look at each individual and their production with the opportunity they were given. So, I took some inspiration from our Fantasy scoring and gathered up some stat categories, set point values to them, then divided the total by the player’s Time on Ice and multiplied that by 60 to give us a score based on that player’s production per 60 minutes. The scoring is as follows: G (goals)> 5, A (assists)> 3, SHT (shots)> 0.5, HIT (hits)> 0.75, SB (shot blocks)> 1, GA (giveaways)> -1, TA (takeways)> 1. I also gave 0.1 points for TOI (time on ice) but I don’t believe that actually did anything other than inflate all of the final scores since I’m dividing by that number anyway. Goalies were sort of difficult and I really didn’t know how to get a good reading when compared to the Skaters. I did a lot of playing around with the scoring until I got what looked like a good spread compared to the Skater’s final scores but I’m not exactly thrilled with it. W (wins)> 20, SO (shutouts)> 10, SV (saves)> 0.25. Again, I added the 0.1 for TOI but I’m decently sure if I got rid of it altogether (meaning for Skaters as well) it would have yielded the same results in terms of redraft order. Unfortunately I think the method I used is weighted heavily in favor of offensive players and doesn’t really reflect how good some players actually were inside of their role. But anyways, more on that after the data…

First thing I noticed once I sorted all my data is that 1oa pick. I thought: man, my metrics must be really flawed. Buuuuuttt, looking into it you can clearly see that Bear Trapp is just a madman. Dude’s on almost a PPG pace while playing in just a third of the games this season and seeing bottom line minutes. Who’s to say how Trapp would perform with more minutes… but, as far as this data goes, he is the man. What I think is funny is that on the complete opposite end of the spectrum at 109oa sits Kevin Kim who has similarly low TOI. Something else that sticks out to me are picks like Theodor Svatos, taken at 69oa since he is a GM yet performing in the top 10. I see something like Bob Wehadababyitsaboy down at #46 and know if i do something like this again I’ll have to improve upon my method. I don’t think teams are waiting that long to take a Rookie Defenseman who led their league in Takeaways. Vancouver trusted him enough to give him the most minutes out of anyone on the list and unfortunately that hurt him since he doesn’t have the highest stats elsewhere. I’m not exactly sure what I could do to balance things out for players like Defensive Defensemen but I definitely would like to find a more concise way to represent the skill of any type of player should I decide to do something like this again. I was pretty aware of these issues, and the Goalie scoring dilemma, but by that time I was so deep into it I had to just keep on truckin through. I would definitely like to add some other stat categories, especially for the Goalies. I'd also likely change the way I determined the +/- of compared draft position since using draft overall positions can inflate that number. What I did like is that my final scores were pretty tight, ranging from roughly 16 to 30 with an average of about 22, meaning there were just a few outliers at the top. It’s not perfect but it’s… uhh… something. Oh, and of course my player still ends up in Manhattan!

oh yeah, infi is one of the people im closest to when it comes to sim leagues. im saying that you likely wouldnt see his player be taken so low if the draft was based purely on player skill, so my metrics arent the best.
