As we are heading towards the end of season 71, Quebec City Citadelles are in 6th place in the Pacific Conference, with only Detroit behind them. Let’s have a look at where the team is right now, and where they will be heading after this season is over.

THE SEASON AS A TEAM

Quebec City Citadelles are projected to finish 12th in the league, and by looking at the TPE totals, that seems like something that was expected. The top teams in the league all have around 10 players with 300+ TPE, while Quebec City Citadelles only has five. Basically that means that the depth of the top teams make it very hard to snag any points from them.

The team has allowed 4.65 goals per game, which obviously is a lot. They have also scored only 3.23 goals per game, while only Great Falls have scored less. The 19 % PP is decent, but that is one of the only positives from this seasons’ on-ice product.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES

Considering the team around them, players like Steve Fudge and Nathan Cormier having a positive plus/minus is pretty crazy, and can be considered as a miracle. They have been a deadly duo on the first line, alongside with Jiggle E. Puff. For the rest of the roster it has been quite rough.

Some of the other notable stats are rookie defender Jaromir Jagrbomb leading the team’s defensemen in points, as well as the rookie center Jeff Hunziker averaging almost a point per game pace. These are some positive signals for the upcoming seasons.

THE DRAFT

I may be naive to trust the pick tracker (no idea if that is actually up to date), but it seems that Quebec City Citadelles has its picks intact, with the only exception being S72 2nd. As the first round pick is looking to be quite high, Quebec City Citadelles is set up for at least one big addition to the team.

Looking at the depth chart, Quebec City is a bit deeper on the D than on the forwards, and would likely be targeting either a forward or a goalie. But naturally that depends on how the draft class shapes out and whether there will be trades including top picks. Another defenseman with a high potential would also solidify their defense, and could maybe allow them to move some players around to build a more balanced line-up.

NEXT SEASON

Elias Adelberg and Edouard Tremblay-Lafleur are the only S69 players, and both have had a very limited role this season. This means that the team is basically guaranteed to improve for the next season, at least on paper. Players like Lea Cranberry, Jeff Hunziker, Jaromir Jagrbomb and Daquavion Davis Jr all have a lot of uncapped potential, and could come back next season significantly more ready to play in the SMJHL.

If their young players keep developing like they have, and if the management can pull off a couple of good picks, the team is very well on track to become competitive again after a few down seasons.
