As the S73 SHL season has come to a close for the Toronto North Stars, it was a breath of fresh air as playoff hockey once again was came back to Toronto for the first time since S68.  Times are looking up for the rebuilding club as they continue to search for a few more pieces that will fill out the locker room and mesh with the overall commitment to getting back to a contending status.  However, what this isn't is media on what is to come... S73 TORONTO NORTH STARS AWARDS
Stars Stars Stars Stars Stars

As outlined in the op, it was definitely a good feeling being able to get back to the playoffs this season. Between Grids and I, S68 seemed like an eternity ago as we battled through the overhaul of a roster and a fresh start from the bottom of the league. In saying that, S73 brought us many bouts of celebration that saw the vets and the youth of the league come together in the same locker room to surprise a few doubters out there... But mostly, provide some laughs and cheers celebrating some the the ageless, old man line along with seeing the promise of the youth of the team shine.

There is no doubt in looking forward that Toronto is continuing to surge forward to S74 in search of taking another step, while continuing to add pieces via trade or free agency. The mantra in the head office is one of patience, yet not wanting to be complacent. Times are going to be exciting, but it takes a team... a family to accomplish the broad goals we have in place. During the season we shook up the leadership office a tad and were happy to bring @CptSquall and @Fluw into the inner circle.

We look forward to Squally taking on the role to start honoring those past North Stars and re-vamping our team Hall of Fame. He has brought some great ideas that we look forward to launching in S74. Fluw has been an absolute workhorse in redecorating our scouting office... The perspective and intuition has been second to none and we could stress how much this has added another layer to our leadership room.

Now for the S73 Moments and Accolades!

Game of the Year: Game 1 of the SHL Playoffs (vs New England)... Lets be real, while @Fuzz posted the greatest chance of the series being 4-1... We still weren't going to be given that one win. After the first period being down 2-0, no one could've predicted a 4-goal second period in a stunned New England area... none the less a game winning goal at the 12-minute mark in the second. This hardly goes without saying the 60 save performance by Rhett Carpet @Carpy48 to even keep us in the game. It gave us a taste one again of what a playoff win is and hopefully will be just a preview of many more to come.

Performance of the Year: While I can't give it to just one player, the old man line... and by this I mean the line of Steve Harrington, Dick Clapper and Andreas Kvalheim. In game 23 of an 11-1 win over Manhattan, this line produced 5 goals and 10 assists combined. While the competition may have lacked shine by some... It is SHL hockey and these aging vets put on a show and then were tucked in by the time the 10 o'clock news started. @Lime @5ympathies @raymond3000

Words on Ben Der: As many may know, Ben Der officially retired at the conclusion of the series loss in the playoffs. What I wanted to do was take a moment and simply acknowledge the commitment on what was a short, but crazily successful defensive-defenseman from @mcgriddleluver . While games played was a mere 462, yes just seven seasons... Ben Der served the role as a depth puck stopper diligently. Grids simply wanted to build a player that wasn't a liability, but to be the pin cushion to sit in front of opposing pucks regularly. He did just that amassing 1902 career blocks, which surprisingly sits him on top of the career team leaderboard for the feat. It isn't doing more with less, but hats off to the commitment of eating puck after puck every night on the ice and in doing so, earned himself multiple All-Star appearances and award nominations.

Lamp Lighter Award: This award goes to none other than William Tree in leading the team in his very first season in the SHL with 30 and all rookies in points with 72. Do more with less is a common theme in Toronto and I can't give enough credit to Tree when the lack of TPE around you forces you to sometimes just get it done on your own. Well done and we look forward to many more! @Bubba Tree

Happy Helper Award: Congrats to both Steve Harrington ( @Lime ) and William Tree ( @Bubba Tree ) as our team leaders in assists. Honestly, I knew very little of what to expect heading into this season. We had a whole line that traversed back to pre-FHM era hockey and a young crop of rookies. To see these two lead the team in helpers didn't surprise me though as they continued to add to their capabilities throughout the season. Only thing here is Lime has to start all over again.

Blue-Pointer Award: With goals and assists always being taken by storm of the forwards, I thought it was time to dis-qualify them from this one. This award is being awarded to the highest point total that is a defenseman. So congrats to our other amazing rookie, Ace Lightning for your outstanding season and your 32 points. There is hope back there after all... Here is to many more seasons to come! @hockeyfan

Shot Shield Service Award: This award is given out to the player who blocks the most shots in the season... and this one goes out to none other than, Ben Der! @mcgriddleluver

Bruiser Cruiser Award: Given to the player with the most hits on the season, the award goes to Bender Junior. After taking a season off from the physical side of the game, Junior put on a few pounds and threw around the weight a bit more this season. Here's to hoping he can let it fly in the KOTR event tomorrow!

Team Rookie of the Year: There were a few great candidates this season... A couple above we already saw in Lightning and Tree, but we can't go without mentioning Rhett Carpet. Life isn't easy stepping in the net of a young squad while being a rookie themselves. However, William Tree really made themselves stand out in comparison to the rest of the league. It will be a sight to see as Tree and Lightning evolve their games simultaneously. Tonight we congratulate William Tree on being the Toronto North Star rookie of the year! @Bubba Tree

Most Dedicated User: Grids and I really didn't have to think too long about this one. As I mentioned a bit of a shake up managerially this season, both of these users answered the call. I think many teams can attest to work that is done behind that gets very little credit to both the volume and time. However, both of these two users answered the call this season... This year's MDU award goes out to @Fluw and @CptSquall ! Thank you for all you have done, your positivity and your support.

Also... a personal runner up to @Jakesdy for all the good mornings and good nights!

Team MVP: For the last award on the board, this award was voted on by the team as a whole. Truly little surprise here as they have shown support in the locker room, but moreover carried the team in statistical categories as noted above. Hard to believe it is just their rookie season, which makes what the future may hold that much more exciting! Congrats to William Tree on such a brilliant seasons on what is just the sunrise of your career. @Bubba Tree

From myself and Grids we want to thank both past and present North Stars for all of the support... We look forward to the skills competition tomorrow!

For formalities... the format is as follows...

- Hardest Shot Competition: Each competitor gets 2 shots. The top six shots measured by MPH will advance to the Finals in which each remaining competitor will have one more attempt. The champion will be determined by the hardest shot in the final round.

- Fastest Skater: Each competitor will have one attempt, with the top six qualify for the finals. The champion will be determined by the fastest time in the final round.

- Single Passer: Highlighting puck control and passing ability, each player will have one attempt with the Top 6 advancing to the finals where the champion will be crowned by total of the final round.

- Bullseye Shooter: Accuracy, quickness and agility are key here as the goal is to hit all four targets in goal as quick as possible. Each shooter will get two attempts and the results will be determined by their best time.

- Team Relay: Four skaters... this is teamwork and will pull from overall offensive skills and positional awareness. Teams will get one attempt at it.

*For transparency, attributes from the latest file were used for all SHL/SMJHL players involved. Metrics and algorithms were used to utilize strengths of the specific event and a RNG assigned at each action to give variability. Variability limitations are in place for various TPE levels to give a higher success chance to those with greater TPE totals.

The first five are up and Dick forgets that this is the hardest shot, while the forwards leave a lackluster attempt out there!

Andreas Kvalheim 97.65
Dick Clapper 95.11
Steve Harrington 97.64
Jimmy Larkin-Conway 98.23
Bender Junior 98.19
