Jay McDonald
@McDonald

The player that a major award was named after. The user who created the Edmonton Comets franchise. An early star of the SHL, we will see why McDonald is the award that all goal scorers chase, as well as see why he is on the top 75 list in the SHL.
Starting in S1, McDonald was drafted 4th OA to the Winnipeg Jets. Obviously since it was S1, that's where McDonalds rookie season began. Scoring 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points in 40 games. McDonald had a decent start to his career, like many of his SHL counterparts. That season, though, would show flashes of his goal scoring during the playoffs, where McDonald and the Jets won their first Challenge Cup, and the first Cup winners of the league. McDonald too, was the first playoffs MVP winner ever. Scoring 8 goals, 6 assists for 14 points in 10 games played.

S2 saw McDonald win his first McDonald(then called the Maurice Richard Trophy) of his career. Scoring 20 goals, 17 assists for 37 points in 38 games played. Good for 4th in the league in points as well. It is important to note that injuries were turned on during this time, so many players played between 35-40 games, depending on if they got injured.

S3 was the 2nd time he led the league in Goals. This time on the Edmonton Comets, as he started the franchise. He led the league in goals again with 23. He also had 17 assists for 40 points. That was also good for 2nd in the league in points at that time. McDonald was lucky again, winning his 2nd Challenge Cup. having Edmonton win its 1st Cup in its franchise history.

S4 was the 3rd and final time McDonald led the league in scoring, but he also lead the league in points too. Scoring 22 goals, 27 assists for 49 points. Winning the McDonald(with the player Segei Karpotsov) and Karpotsov awards for most goals and points. That season McDonald won his final Challenge Cup of his career, the 3rd Cup of his career.

S5 is the only time McDonald was ever nominated for the Ron Mexico award in his career. Scoring 21 goals, 24 assists for 45 points, he was 2nd in points and goals only behind Ron Mexico himself.

S6 saw McDonald do his thing again. 21 goals, 22 assists for 43 points. Unfortunately though, the SHL was entering the “experimental” era. So even putting up the same amount of points, it was now 60 games played. S7 saw the league go back down to 50 GP, and McDonald put up 12 goals, 30 assists for 42 points. Good for t-14th in the league in points. S8 was McDonalds last season of being an elite player in the league. Scoring 12 goals, 32 assists for 44 points, he again was t-9th in points that season, S8 saw the experimental era come to an end. S9 started on with the inflation era of the SHL, and McDonald was left behind.
S9,S10 were Mcdonalds last true seasons in the league in a major position in the lineup. With McDonald in S9 scoring 20 goals, 19 assists for 39 points. This time however, it was only good for 33rd most points in that season, with the inflation of scoring during this time. S10 saw McDonald have an uptick in scoring. 21 goals, 27 assists for 48 points. Even further down the list though, being 41st in points for that season.
S11 saw McDonald's minutes slashed to only 10 minutes a night, only scoring 16 points. S12 only had McDonald skate for 16 minutes that whole season. Thus, ending his career.

For his career totals, he scored 561 points, 190 goals, 235 assists for 425 career points. When he retired in S12, that was good for 16th all time in points. Yet, he is remembered for the early seasons of dominance. Through the early stretch of the young SHL league, being one of the best goal scorers during it, which led to the SHL naming the most goals in a season award to the Jay McDonald Award. The legacy lives on.
