Deep Dive #2 - From Recovery to the Waiver wire, and beyond

From Recovery to the Waiver wire, and beyond.

This off season is probably one of the wildest off seasons that many players could ever write up in a book let alone believe that it was something that really happened. It was the middle of July and just another normal training event for Raymond when the unfortunate happened. It one quick flash he caught and edge and ended up head first into the boards. In just that one second he went for preparing for the SMJHL draft to wondering if he would ever lace them up again.

Sitting in the hospital 6 days later, 4 days removed from a fusion surgery that fused six of his vertebrae, from his T1 thru to his T6. As a result of taking a swan dive head first into the boards he fractured his T3 and T4 vertebrae and came within 2 millimeters of severing his spinal cord, but surprising everyone including him self, he was up and walking just two days after surgery and four days after the initial accident. The prognosis of his future, very much up in the air, as how close he can get back to his original game is still unknown.

After months of rehab and physical therapy Raymond finally got back on the ice, it was a slow process but one that was needed to go through to have any chance to hopefully get that call that he was going to get his chance to sign with a team in the SMJHL. The waiver wire was his only avenue after having to miss the draft, a lot of teams were unwilling to spend draft capital on a player that still hadn't skated in months. It was looking like Raymond's career might have been cut short until the phone rang and Nevada was on the other end.

It wasn't the path Raymond expected that would take him to the SMJHL but it was the one he had to travel. The Battleborn were more then willing to give him a shot but their were some stipulations. Raymond has always grown up playing at center, but Nevada already had there center ice roles filled, so instead Raymond had to transition this season to defense. It was some new territory for Lucas, and will have its learning curves for the player, but so far the experiment hasn't been a huge failure.

The Battleborn are currently in their rebuilding cycle, which gives them the timing to take a chance on Raymond and so far he has answered the bell for someone recovering from injury and playing out of position. As we sit here now with roughly 18 games played Raymond sits with 5 assists and 4th on the team with takeaways at 14. The one thing that has still alluded Raymond this season is finally putting away his first professional goal. It hasn't happened yet but it is something that maybe believe is right around the corner.

Overall it has been one heck of a journey for over the past year for Lucas Raymond but with the steps we have seen it looks like the chances of Raymond getting to the level he was at is well in the realm of possibilities and could even surpass that.

(This was a fun one as outside of the SMJHL stuff this is based pretty firmly of how my last 7 months have gone.)
