The Berserkers Analytics
By: MattyJ I enjoyed doing this for QCC in my deep dive so I wanted to run it back for my own team's spotlight. I will be diving into the analytics to see what is going on with NL and how they can improve. Let us get into it. This is an unbiased outside look into the team that I play for by the way. With Goals For averaging 4.02 per game and Goals Against at 3.51 per game, it seems to have a balanced approach with a slightly higher goals for. They're scoring consistently while also maintaining a relatively solid defense. However, they may want to tighten up a bit on defense to reduce the number of goals they concede per game. Defense was a focus going into the offseason, so there might have been some disconnect between both GMs in the draft. Drafting MattyJ over a defensive partner for Cuffy, weird. Looking at Shots For and Shots Against per game, they're generating a good amount of offense with an average of 37.42 shots for and facing 34.44 shots against per game. This indicates they're controlling possession and applying pressure on their opponents while also managing to limit the number of shots they allow defensively. This aligns perfectly with their higher goals for average. However, it does appear NL is shooting at a slightly higher percentage then their opponents. Could be an indicator of solid goalie play. Their Power Play Percentage is at 22.1%, with 34 goals scored on 154 opportunities. While not the highest, it's still a respectable conversion rate on the power play, suggesting they're effective at capitalizing on those opportunities. Many teams are converting at a higher rate, but it is a winnable number. On the Penalty Kill, they have an 81.2% success rate, killing off 134 out of 165 penalties. This indicates they're doing a good job of defending when shorthanded, but there's still room for improvement to prevent opposing teams from scoring on the power play. They are hovering around a similar percentage of scoring and goals given up on the power play. So this is clearly not the issue with the team, but still something that if improved upon, could help them in the ranks. Their Faceoff Win Percentage sits at 48.5%, which is average. Winning more faceoffs could give them better control of the game and more opportunities to generate offense or kill penalties more effectively. However, 48.5% is very doable for a successful SMJHL franchise. Overall, these stats paint a picture of a solid team that's performing decent in most areas of the game. They have a balanced offense and defense, are generating a good amount of shots. They are obviously an above .500 team after diving into these numbers. Well, the stats say one thing but the rankings say another. Sitting at 20-22, where is the issue? These stats don't appear to be one of a below .500 team. The issue lands more on the basis of consistency. By looking at the recent scores, it is clear this is the issue. While I could not create stats for this, it is very obvious. NL will win a game 9-2 and then lose another 4-5. This boosts their stats greatly, however there record would still be 1-1. This is by far the greatest issue. We will look to see them improve on consistency. The overall statistics paint a colorful picture of a team that could be an issue in the postseason. Some slight improvements to strategy could make the world of difference. Perhaps a larger sample size of games will bring them back above that .500 mark which their stats perceive the team to be. Right now, this is a good team, not a great team. The only time they are a great team is when they play QCC ![]() 655 words ![]() |
