Harry Carpet
@Carpy48

Who loves being a goalie more than Harry Carpet. How else would he achieve being the first goalie to reach 1000 games played in the SHL with 1006. 978 of that with an official status of a win, loss, or otl.That is 120 more games than the next closest goalie(Mat Smith). To have the dedication for so long, and be dedicated to 1 team during that time shows a lot of character for Carpet.

Like many goalies, they get drafted into the 2nd round. Drafted 28OA, Harry Carpet was drafted in S47. His first full season in the SHL was S49. And let’s just say, Toronto was not a great team. In his first 8 seasons, there was only 1 season where Carpet had a winning record. The rest, Toronto was rebuilding or was a middling team.

S50 was the only season out of the first 8 where he had a winning record. With 23-18-2 with 1 shutout and a .906 SV% he was decent. The rest of the 7 seasons Carpet went a total of 81-161-18 with 16 shutouts and an average SV% of .914 over S51->S56.

But in those 8 seasons, Carpet did get a Rookie All star, 3rd All Star, 2nd All Star, and a McBride nom. That Mcbride nomination came from a 10-30-2 season with 4 shutouts and a .920 SV%. Trying to do some semblance of being a goalie on a terrible Toronto team.

Then after those 8 seasons, comes the peak years of Carpet. Finally with a good to great Toronto team. Over the next 10 seasons Carpet had 9/10 winning seasons. Within that time frame, Carpet had a record of 295-185-35 with 46 shutouts and an average .917 SV%. Within those 10 seasons is where Carpet racked up all of the awards. 3 McBride Nominations(S58,S60,S67), 3 McBride Wins(S59,S62,S63), and then x3 1st All Stars and a 2nd All Star. An amazing run in the regular season. Unfortunately for him, Toronto could not get to that next level in the playoffs. Whether that's goalie trouble, or not scoring enough goals. Carpet did not win a cup.

So lets see those peak seasons…

S58 saw Carpet play 48 games, with a record of 33-10-5 and 3 shutouts. A .917, good enough for his 2nd John McBride nomination. In S59 he elevated his game even more. Having one of his best seasons ever. Going 38-13-3 with 8 shutouts and a .925 SV%. He won his first John McBide award, and a 1st All Star. S60 he rounded out those 3 great seasons with a 34-14-6 record, 4 shutouts and a .918 SV%. Earning a 3rd McBride nomination in 3 consecutive seasons.

S62 he won his 2nd McBride Award. Carpet went 28-22-5, with a career high 9 shutouts and a career high .928 SV%. Earning himself that McBride Win, and 2nd All Star. S63 he got his 3rd and final McBride win of his career. Byt going 41-19-4 with 5 shutouts and an incredible .925 SV%. He got 1st All Star Team, as well as that McBride win.

S64 would be his only losing record at that time. With Toronto in flux, whether to go full on rebuild or try to remain competitive, Carpethad a record of 18-33-2. Not great, but a record of what Toronto was that season. But as GM Wally decided that it was the time to buy and try to go all in, Carpet benefited greatly from that.

S65 Carpet went back into the positive. A 27-21-3 record. S66 was another good season, going 29-21-2, but a ghastly .89 SV%. S67 would be Carpets last great season. GOing 27-11-2, with 4 shutouts and an amazing .918 SV% at the time for FHM8. Carpet got his last McBride nomination, and last 1st All Star Team. S68 was the last winning record by Carpet. Going 22-6-1 and 2 shutouts. S69 saw Toronto embark on a rebuild actually.

As Toronto embarked on a rebuild, Carpet has called it a career. At the time of his retirement, Carpet led the SHL in career wins with 479. Leading the SHL in shutouts, and having a career sv% of .9137 over his career. Very impressive career, and a Toronto legend.

So what is his legacy? Unfortunately it is not one for big playoffs moments, as Toronto never made it to the finals or got deep into the playoffs many times. So what is his legacy?  I think it’s one of capturing a couple great moments. Being the goalie to pass McFadden in wins, being the first goalie to play in 1000+ games, and then the x3 McBride wins during that peak. Not a lot of goalies have won 3 McBrides. The only goalie to play 1000 games, and the first goalie to break an STHS Record for Wins. Held back by Toronto, Carpet made the most out of the good years of Toronto. 7 nominations, 3 wins, 4 noms.
