John McBride
@fever95

Only playing 8 seasons as a goalie, McBride has cemented himself as one of the best SHL goalies, as well as getting his name on the best SHL Award you can get as a goalie. Lets see why he deserved to be on this list, as well as why the Award is named after him.

Drafted in the 4th round of the S5 SHL draft, McBride was taken 48th OA by the Winnipeg Jets, McBride would stay in the SMJHL for 1 more season before making his debut.
Debuting in S6, Mcbride started 60 times for the Winnipeg jets as their main goalie. Going 24-21-14 with 3 shutouts and an incredible .931 SV%.Immediately making an impact in the league, having it be his best season of his career. For all of that, he won his first McBride Award of his career. As well as his first all Star Team. For the Experimental era(S6-S8) McBride’s season’s SV% of .931 was tied for first.

S7 was almost just as good for McBride. Going 25-19-6 with 2 shutouts and a .924 SV%, McBride won his 2nd McBride Award, and his first Mike Honcho award for having the least amount of goals as a starting goalie. The .924 SV% was also the 5th best SV% of the Experimental era as well. On top of all of that, McBride won the Challenge Cup with the Winnipeg Jets. On that run to the Challenge Cup victory, McBride backstopped the Jets to two straight sweeps, one in the West Finals and the other in the Cup Final. In those 8 games, John McBride only let in 9 goals, which led to him winning the Anton Razov trophy for playoff MVP.

S8 was the worst season of his career. Going 19-17-8, with a .914, he did not receive any accolades besides the All Star Team. S9 will see the start of the inflation era, where scoring went up, and save percentages went down.

S9 overall was his best season yet. With 29 wins, 11 losses, and 4 OTL. He sported a .900 SV% and 1 shutout. For the start of the inflation era, he won the McBride Award and Mike Honcho award. For the 4 seasons he was a starting goalie in the SHL we already had 3 McBride wins, and 2 Mike Honcho’s.

S10 was another excellent season by Honcho. GOing 28-9-6 with a .903 SV%, he won the McBride for the 4th time. That .903 SV% would also be the best SV% during the inflation era(S9-S11). S11 was the same story. With a career high 34 wins, along with 9 losses and 1 OTL. Sporting another excellent .902 SV%, he won the McBride Award, Honcho Award, and was Nominated for the Ron Mexico. The first goalie to ever get nominated for the Ron Mexico.

S12 was the start of the Modern Day SHL(besides the 52 game era of S21-S24). With that, came better save percentages for goalies. S12 McBride went 26-15-3 with 4 shutouts and a  .916 SV%. Winning his 6th and final McBride Award. Winning his 4th Mike Honcho award that season too. Winnipeg also went on a playoff run only losing in the finals. Again, we don't have the playoff stats, but McBride also had an Anton Razov nomination as well.

S13 was McBrides final season in the league, going 27-13-4 with 6 shutouts and a .908 SV%.
Only 8 seasons in the league, winning 6 McBride Awards, 4 Honcho’s, and a Ron Mexico Nomination to finish it off. The league was different back then for sure. As McBride lived in 3 different era’s, played in the league where there was less competition for awards. But he also had the highest SV% in 2 of them. When he finished his career he had 212 wins, 114 losses, 46 OTL, 19 shutouts and a career SV% of .915. When he retired he had the 4th most wins, and the best SV% of the top 10 goalies. That's why he is on this list, the dominance of his short career, and the impact he had to this day via an Award being named after him when he retired.

One of the greatest goalies of all time in the SHL, without a doubt. Icon in my mind and generally a fantastic guy.
