Deep Dive #2 - Rookie Points Leaders
#1

With the S78 SMJHL regular season coming to an end this week, today we’ll take a look at the top 10 rookies who managed to rack up the most points in their first year of the league.

T1. RW - Kral King -  Raptors  - 61 points

The big Czech winger, King impressed from the start as he managed to lead all rookies in goal scoring with 29 goals while being tied for most points. What’s most impressive about this is that he did it with an average time on ice of 16:32 and very limited power play time.

T1. C - Zeus Storm -  Raptors  - 61 points

Tied with his teammate King for most points, Storm also is tied for first in most assists with 39 of them. He also displayed a well-rounded game with a plus/minus of +23, first amongst Colorado forwards, and a very good faceoff percentage of 55.9%.

3.  RW - Easton Schaffer -  Highlanders  - 52 points

The third overall player taken in the SMJHL draft, there were certainly high expectations for Schaffer in Ottawa and he in his first full year with the club he definitely delivered on them. As a rookie, he was a major part of Ottawa’s improvement this year as he saw himself succeed in a big role on the team’s first line and first power play unit.

T4. RW - Jackass Pants -  Grizzlies  - 50 points

The second round centre turned winger from Czechia, Pants tied all rookies on this list with the most assists at 39. Pants also displayed his excellent 200-foot game as he finished second on the Grizzlies with a plus/minus of +19

T4. RW - Brock Jameson -  Citadelles  - 50 points

This fourth round pick came out of nowhere to have an amazing debut season with the defending Four Star champions. The 57th player out of 62 players taken in the SMJHL draft, Jameson managed to put up 50 points all at even strength, as Quebec City got amazing value out of this pick.

T4. LW - Campbell Fischermann -  Raptors  - 50 points

The third Colorado Raptors player on this list, Fischermann managed to put up 50 points, all at even strength. Of anyone on this list, Fischermann has the least amount of time on ice at 15:59, it will be fascinating to see what he can do in the coming years with a more ice time.

7. C - Jett Labyrinth -  Berserkers  - 48 points

Newfoundland’s first round pick, Labyrinth has a very respectable rookie year with 13 goals and 34 assists. The all-around centre had a big role in his first year with the Berserkers playing on the first line and first penalty kill unit while averaging 21:29 minutes on ice a game.

T8. RD - Peter -  Citadelles  -  46 points

The first and only defensemen on this list, Peter had an excellent rookie campaign with Quebec City as one of their top defensemen. As a third round pick, Peter played on the first pairing in all situations making him yet another steal for the Citadelles.

T8. RW - Randolph Thompson-Smythe -  Citadelles  - 46 points

Another Quebec CIty third rounder, Thompson-Smythe put up a solid 20 goal season while playing on Quebec City’s all-rookie third line. On top of this, he managed to lead all rookies in hits with 147.

T10. RW - Weston Windsor -  Berserkers  - 45 points

Newfoundland found gold as they picked up the speedy American winger, Windsor on waivers at the beginning of the season. His 45 points are made even more superb when taken into account that he did this in only 60 games and all occurring at even strength.

T10. RW - Felix Carlsson -  Tidal  - 45 points

Carlsson went in the first round to San Diego in the SMJHL draft and despite the Tidal’s last place finish, he had a good year with 12 goals and 33 assists. With a shooting percentage of 6.8%, it’s easy to conclude that Carlsson was very unlucky and could be in contention to break out even further next season.

This concludes the list however there are many rookies just missing the top 10 indicating that the S78 draft class has many great prospects with bright futures ahead of them.
