Deep Dive #2 - May O'Nayse had an all-time great season

Yes, in doing a big of looking to find my thoughts on the potential MVP candidates for this season, I saw May O'Nayse. At first I thought, eh, nothing special, 96 points, stacked team, whatever. And then I saw the powerplay time. And powerplay points. And I realized they were dominating even strength this season compared to their peers. And then I thought, might be interesting to dive into that. So here we are, deep diving. I looked at past SMJHL seasons to compare even strength points.
And I kept diving. And diving. And diving. I hit 5, 10 season in the past. I kept going. I stopped keeping track at that point. I downloaded the CSV to check every single season in FHM. No one was beating May O'Nayse. 91 even strength points is the most even strength points in an SMJHL season in FHM history. Period. Now, it would be remiss of me not to give Wednesday Addams a nod here as also one of the greatest SMJHL seasons of all time, with 89 even strength points in S72. This was the previous record before O'Nayse this season. I am only counting even strength points here, most notably to exclude favourable powerplay minutes. This of course also removes unfavourable penalty kill minutes - which is where Addams gets major props from me. 89 even strength points and 5 shorthanded points, with 0 PP points, for 94 total. O'Nayse had no PK points, so technically if you wanted to include PK points in the count, Addams surpasses. Mia Lavoie in S76 is the only other player to surpass 80 even strength points in a single season. After that is a 4 way tie at 77 even strength points, including Froya Solberg's record 127 point season. Interesting note if you've followed the 4 names mentioned - they are all female players. FHM woman buff? (someone tell that to my goalie). Anyway though to get back to May, this is arguably the greatest season in SMJHL history for a player. It's not the 127 points that Froya put up, though 127 is a little less impressive when 45 came from the powerplay. I think May should be getting major consideration for the MVP award this season, and this is a season that should be remembered for a while. The 2nd most even strength points this season was from May's teammate Anna Skovgaard with 73. 18 more even strength points than the next best is a massive gap. It's record-breaking even strength production. Unless the voters don't see it, this should be an MVP win for May. Which is in part why I did this deep dive - it wasn't evident to me when I started looking at the MVP race for my PT. I'm glad I caught it, and I took this deeper dive on it because I don't want it to be overlooked. Beyond just this season & MVP, with a season left to play in the SMJHL, May has a serious chance at putting up the most even strength points in a SMJHL career. Currently Emeril Lagasse holds the record with 256, and there's a lot of names between Lagasse and May, but most are retired. May sits at now 203 career even strength points, which means even a bad, 60 even strength point season will surpass Lagasse. I didn't check closely, so I could be wrong, but I don't think there's anyone between May and Lagasse who has another SMJHL season to play. As a rookie May had 44 even strength points, which even should she only match that would still be enough to sit 2nd all time with 247 career even strength points. @AW13 Tables for data lovers Prince George Firebirds GM (S34-S36) Toronto North Stars GM (S37-S43)
