What a season so far! Considering the amount of rookies in the line-up, the Citadelles did a lot better than expected, finishing with the best record in the league. To celebrate this, we got the weekend off to spend some time with the family or blow off some steam. Some looked a little rough this morning, but everyone managed to get on the bus to the arena. *Maxine Nightingale starts playing in the background*
Our GM's spent of course all weekend figuring out the tactics and getting the line matchups just right. Now it's time to put on the headphones, get into the zone and get ready to face a Vancouver team that had a very rough season and will likely do everything in their power to manage a first round upset. For some of us it will be the first junior playoff action and although the excitement is palpable, this is the time to focus and show what we really got.

Wrapped up the season at the top of the table with a game to spare. We’ve proven that we have the skill and ability to win but being able to play at your best during the playoffs is a skill in itself. Coach has been drilling us at practice to keep our game simple and do what we’ve been doing so far. We have a large amount of rookies in the lineup who have never played under playoff pressure before. Coach is aware and we’ve talked about how to best handle it. Playing a rather struggling Vancouver squad in the 1st round we are heavy favourites but that just puts all the pressure to win on us. How each individual on this team prepares varies. I’m watching tape and figuring out my matchups. Then you have a guy like Bindewald whose game plan always is just to run over anyone who moves, he spends his time listening to his music and getting into his zone. The goalies with their rituals, Rainbow Dash just working on sprints, etc. The whole team is getting ready, as a team and as individual players, all with one goal in mind, be the ones who raise the Cup.

The Whalers prepared the only way they know how: By not doing a fucking thing.
You see, down the stretch, the Whalers ACTUALLY began figuring it out. In our last 7 games, we went 4-3. We managed to drag ourselves out of the depths of history, and as the age old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Well, we spent the whole season "fixing", and now Vancouver is "fixed". Is Vancouver a GOOD team? No, absolutely not. The team has lacked an identity for most of the season, and without a way to add talent to the forward core, the task at hand was simple: Figure out a way to make the team gel as is, and limit blowouts. With some big tweaks to our lineups (big shoutout to @Dextaria for gracing us with their SIMGOD status), Vancouver was FINALLY trending in the right direction. Then the last 2 sims happened, and in those last 2 sims, Vancouver went 4-3, including a 3-0 romp on the Thursday sim. Are we feeling confident going into round 1 against QCC? No, we all know there's no way we're winning this series. But if we can steal a game or 2, god damn would that be sweet. But imagine if we win the series.

For the Carolina Kraken this season, we had a lot of new faces joining the cup with the recent S79 SMJHL entry draft. Good thing in the J all teams automatically qualify for the playoffs so this experience will prove beneficial in the growth of their rookies. In fact, they have a line made up entirely of their rookies that played this season with Greyson Wills, Kim Chaewon and Goosetavo on the forward group and with Carter Rumsy and Carter St. Pierre on the blueline (the carter d-pair). As we have seen in past playoffs just because you have a dominant regular season that doesn't always carry over into the playoffs. It will determine on how well coaches matchup against their opposition and knowing how to shutdown their top players, while putting their own top players in the best matchups. Playoffs are a big chess game and we'll look to do our best against whoever we face.

This season hasn't been an easy one for us Whalers, but we ended on a much higher note, stringing together a few wins. Going into the playoffs we are without a doubt the underdogs. In fact if we're being honest, underdogs doesn't even feel like a strong enough word.
If we're going to pull off an upset for the ages our preparation has to be multifaceted. First is the mental side. We can't be intimidated by our opponents' record or individual stats. We have to believe that we have it in us to pull this off. Along with that comes a need for team unity. I'm happy to say that hasn't been a problem at all this year and despite everything this locker room is as close as one could be. We all support and believe in each other. The other facet of our preparation comes on the ice in practice, and it's about ironing out the little mistakes that good teams seize and capitalize on. Penalty kill is also going to be a huge part of this series so we really need to make sure we understand our assignments and rotations. If we can keep their special teams off the board we have a real shot, albeit a small one, of pulling this off.

The Ottawa Highlanders went off the deep end for this years playoffs preparation. You've heard all type of wacky rituals teams do before playoffs, we got everything from naked yoga to climbing mt Everest in only tennis shoes and a coat. I think I even read about a team not playing hockey for a month? It wouldn't shock you when I say they had an early exit.
@Frenchie had read something new in "Mom Journals" (Some magazine for mothers? Idk why he's reading it) and thought the team would try it out. As a "team bonding exercise". Competitive cow tipping. I tried telling him cow tipping is an urban legend and was never real, especially competitive cow tipping. But he kept implying "nu uh, I saw it on TV". So we all said ok Frenchie and we took the team bus out to the closest farm. Issue was, there was only chicken farms close by, we kept driving and driving and driving forever.. Deep into the night we finally found a cow farm.. All cows are already tipped!!! We see a cloud of dust and a wave of banjo music moving away from the field. Carolina Krakens team bus. :clenches-fist:

The season has been fun but the Thunder Bay Walleye have been focused on one thing: playoffs. This is where the team wants to shine. The team has been reviewing tape and go over the strengths and weaknesses of Yukon, their first round matchup. The locker room is buzzing with excitement and the players are giving their all. Outside of the rink Thunder Bay is getting ready for the excitement that is the playoffs. Car and boat flags are everywhere and watch parties are being planned. The city which has full accepted their newly landed team is hopeful that they will be able to pull off a long playoff run.
As much as there is this nervous excitement, especially amongst the numerous rookies on the team, there is a calm confidence coming from the veteran players and management. The feeling is that the regular season was all just warm up for this moment. That the team will be able to turn it up a notch and out perform what they did in the regular season. If Myers has million fans, then I’m one of them.
If Myers has one fan, then I’m THAT ONE.
If Myers has no fans, that means I’m dead.

The Newfound Berserkers prepared for their matchup with the Kelowna Knights by watching game film. This was a variety of films and shows, including, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Black Knight (starring Martin Lawrence), Game of Thrones, the one with Heath Ledger that I’m blanking on the name of, Army of Darkness and Braveheart (first time I’d seen the film, very good). In addition to watching game film, we had a bit of an “ace up the sleeve” so to speak, with two former Kelowna Knights on our team traded during the draft, we picked their brains for strategies and schemes so we are prepared for anything they may throw our way. That was a majority of the preparation we prepared. Maybe we’re cocky, but I think our sights are set beyond the first round and we’re mentally preparing for the eventual battle between Northern Conference rival Quebec City Citadels. The Berserkers went a miserable 2-4 against the QCC this season. We are hungry for revenge. A knights tale, that's the name.

As far as the Detroit Falcons were concerned, our mission is to completely decimate the opponent. Colorado is a team full of actual dinosaurs, and so our first call to action was to remind our team that this playoff series would be an extinction-level event like the world has.. already seen. The meteor Discord emoji finally gets some use. The Detroit Falcons players are united in our mission.
As for lines and tactics, OVOXO is on the case. He has spent time scouting the opposition and setting the tactics and lines accordingly. While the first two games against Colorado weren't fantastic, fear not, it was all part of the plan - who doesn't enjoy a Cinderella comeback story? Colorado is undoubtedly sitting, no... bathing, in their smug overconfidence right at this moment, totally unaware that it is their first mistake of many more to come. Our plan of lulling them into a deep sleep is working to perfection. (156)

The Kraken aren't worried about the playoffs. To some teams, this first round is what they have been looking forward to and fighting for the entire regular season. But to the Kraken, it's just another set of games. Our mindset is to take it one game at a time, and just play our game every night we get out there on the ice. That being said, the whole team is still super excited to be in the playoffs, because we still have our sights set on the biggest goal: winning the cup.
Greyson Willis, as a rookie, is super excited to be playing in his first SMJHL playoffs, and is hoping to make an impact on the team. Everybody else in the locker room is also pumped to be here, and honestly, even if the team didn't win a single game, everybody would still be super happy just to be part of the roster. But we are here, and we have a job to finish.

The season was tough one for the Nevada Battle Born. Going into the playoffs there are number of items we need to work on first being our Defense we have stellar goalies but the defensive line is holding them back and coach gave us drills to work on a our positioning we love laying the body but that comes at the cost that it puts us of position when we are selling out for the hit. Our forward core they were great most of our teams are rookies so for them to be putting up the numbers they are is really great. Coach just wants to brush up the importance of creating plays in the offensive zones rather then just pushing or forcing the play. Another great note is the teams do not enjoy playing the in the desert it could be the desert hitting their lungs but we can steal a game or two on the road we can really close out series at the home barn

How quickly the season goes by! It was definitely an interesting season for Kelowna! We didn't have the best record, but the rookies were given a lot of ice time. We're going into the playoffs here as quite the underdogs, finishing second last on the season. We talked about what it'll take to be successful in this playoff series. We have to play against a strong team in the Newfoundland Berserkers. The key to this playoff series is doing our best to keep the puck out of our net.. Offense is already hard to come by with this Kelowna team and it's gonna be even harder against the top defensive team in the league. If we're able to draw penalties and make good on our power plays, we have a chance. In the end, we are extreme underdogs, but who doesn't love a good underdog story. Even if we lose, as long as we put up a fight and have some good showings by our rookies, our team will be happy

At Maine we prepared with more training. Started with speed and started to work on our shooting. Most of us down on the depth we worked on physical play. Cycling and working on just playing together as a team.
We did very well at it in the regular season. It’s time to amp it up for playoffs. It’s never easy to win in playoffs. It’s a more physical game in general. We did watch some Shoresy to get us into game flow. Just trying to get into that set of F the other team. We can win and we will win. Some of us did some yoga work as well. Keep us flexible and fresh doing some exercise as well. We’re trying to run it up on the boards for the four star. We gotta do whatever it takes to win. Our goaltender have been doing a lot of reactionary training as well to work on it. t

Prepare? That’s what the whole season was for with the QCC! None stop wins and taking that first spot was all in preparation for the playoffs this season. It was a long fought battle with ups and downs the entire way. But the long season doesn’t mean anything if you can’t finish in the end.
So how else does the QCC get their preparation done? Making sure we are stocked up on all the necessary goods. Gotta make sure those smelling salts are ready so that each player has their head in the game. Making sure each stick is taped to each players perfection. Hitting the gym extra hard to make sure that everyone is in peak condition. But of course enjoying each other’s company and engaging in team building exercises so that everyone knows it’s win or lose together. It’s all these things and carrying the momentum from the regular season into the post season. QCC has a saying and that’s to just win. |
