Deep Dive #1 - The Söderberg Family Tree

Hockey does not have royalty; championships are certainly not handed down, but in the Söderberg family, hockey can definitely be said to be a family affair. During this past SMJHL draft, in which not one, not two, but three Söderberg-Tremblays were drafted, the question arose - how are they all related? To one another, of course, but also to the assortment of other Söderberg-somethings within the league. It is, of course, not an uncommon surname in Sweden, the country which birthed the matriarch of this family, but it does happen that all of the ones you've likely heard of are related in some way, and I am here today to deeply dive into the history of athleticism in this family and to lay out for you the tangled web of this family tree.
In the beginning, there was Hanna Eklund. Hanna was married to a very nice man named Elias Söderberg. They had seven children before Elias unfortunately died - Liv, Emilia, Erika, Cecilia, Helena, Astrid, and Gunnar. Of those many children, those that will be of interest to us are Emilia, Helena, Astrid, and Gunnar. We'll do this in order of age! Emilia married a man named Jan Motyla of the great country of Poland, and of their union was born Florian Söderberg-Motyla. Florian played his entire SMJHL career for the Yukon Malamutes, and has just finished his fifth season with the Toronto North Stars. An interesting fact here is that for the first three seasons of his career, Florian had exactly 43 points each season. He hit a career high with 52 points this season. He has also appeared four times now (soon to be five) for the Swedish national team. Moving on! Helena Söderberg played for Tokyo in the SSL, which is not relevant here, but she also married Eirlys Snooks. Eirlys is the sister of Conner Snooks (of the SHL), and their daughter Kiwi Söderberg-Snooks is an absolute goon who has already amassed over 200 PIM in her three seasons in the SMJHL, and has been in 15 fights already, 12 of which she has won. This is particularly impressive when you consider the fact that most players will only see one or two fights per season, if any. Eirlys and Helena are also mothers to Willow Söderberg-Snooks - who is one of the best defensive players in the SHL. Despite also being very good defensively, Willow has surpassed fifty points every single season in the SHL except for her rookie season. She has blocked over 1100 shots in her eight seasons played for San Francisco and Los Angeles. For the final large branch of the family tree, we will slide down to the youngest of Hanna's children, Gunnar. Gunnar wasn't really an SHL superstar - he had one really solid Razov-winning season when Chicago won the cup in S57, but aside from that he was thoroughly average. Where Gunnar's story begins to stand out for our purposes here is where his path converged with Jean-Uhtred Ragnarsson-Tremblay, who would later become his husband. Jean-Uhtred was also on that S57 cup team, but it wasn't until a few seasons and a trade after that when the two of them would get together. Their first offspring to make it to the SHL was Matsmith Söderberg-Tremblay, who was adopted as an older child and proved to have natural talent all of his own not biologically inherited from the family tree he was tied into. And now, most recently, with a surrogate assist from Gunnar's sister Astrid (hence my mention of her relevance to our saga), Gunnar and Jean-Uhtred have also brought into the world this latest generation of Söderberg-Tremblays - the triplets Baldur-Ulysse, Phoenix-Orion, and Océane. So that's it! That sums up the great big family tree saga I promised...but it is almost definitely only the beginning of this complicated web. If you're curious, you can also see a badly-illustrated version of this family tree below. ![]() ![]() SHL GM SHL GM ![]() Registered Posting Freak ![]() Registered Brennan Lee Mulligan Stan |
