Local Youth Prepares for Draft
By Jack Smith With the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League draft just days away, the class of Season 82 is preparing for a life-changing moment. Among them is Cardiff’s own Meredydd Meyrick, a talented defenseman on the brink of realizing his dream. I sat down with him at his family home on Llantrisant Street to discuss his journey and what lies ahead. From Rugby Fields to the Ice “I always knew I had a shot at getting drafted,” Meyrick said, reflecting on his hockey journey. But getting here was not always straightforward, especially in a household where rugby was king. “Dad wanted me to play rugby, but there was just something about ice hockey that called to me,” he shared. His father, a passionate rugby fan, initially encouraged him to pursue the sport, then later tried steering him toward football. But fate had other plans. “One day, I was at a park, and some kids were playing street hockey. It was love at first sight,” Meyrick recalled. From that moment on, he dedicated himself to mastering the sport, working tirelessly to prove he had what it takes. Family Support & Draft Preparations As the draft approaches, excitement fills the Meyrick household. “My parents are thrilled,” he said. “They’ve always supported me, and they knew I could make it after seeing how hard I worked to be the best I could be.” When asked if he’s been in contact with teams, Meyrick confirmed he’s spoken with about half of the team’s scouts. “They all seemed interested, but the one that stood out to me was Anchorage,” he revealed. “They need what I bring to the table.” A New Chapter on the Horizon Being drafted would be a dream come true, but it would also mean leaving Cardiff behind for an opportunity thousands of miles away. “It will be hard to be on the other side of the globe, away from my family and friends,” he admitted. “But knowing I’ll be playing the game I love and have a chance to make it big makes it all worth it.” With the draft fast approaching, Cardiff’s own Meredydd Meyrick is on the verge of taking the next big step in his hockey career. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to seeing him make his mark on the ice. |
