Everyone knows that following a season, you have to say farewell to those you’ve called teammates for the past year. Regardless of the sport the only constant in a locker room is change and turnover. This was especially true with the STL Scarecrows after s80. Every team consists of fifteen skaters and two goalies; Seventeen total roster spots. The Scarecrows saw ten players in total depart prior to the S81 draft, either to call ups, trades, contracts ending, or drops. That’s just under sixty percent (58.8) of their roster. Normally, you’d think such a mass departure would lead to disaster. Coming off a 17W season there’s not much more room for disaster, only improvement. This deep dive will take a look at and compare roster TPE from the end of S80 (4739 TPE from 2 goalies + 15 most active skaters) and the beginning of the S81. (4579 TPE from first game of S81 regular season)

We’ll begin with breaking down the S80 team (using the index to pull numbers, not sure if those are season beginning TPE, or ending. Regardless, that’s where the data was pulled.) Along the Blue line they lost three players, not too bad right? Wrong. This was the biggest hit to the TPE total across all groups. Each defensemen that left carried the 425 TPE cap with them for a total of 1275. The second biggest TPE loss category was forwards. The biggest number of spots vacated come from the forward group, but only took away 910 TPE from the team. (182 average). Last but not least was in the crease, which was left completely empty after the season concluded. Both goalies hit the road, for a total TPE loss of 548 (274 average). Overall this works out to 273.3 TPE per player or to a total of 2733 TPE lost. That’s 57.7 percent of the S80 team’s total TPE. Obviously that’s a large number to just recoup in rookies during the draft, but there’s also room for improvement for a few of the returning players and veterans that might not have been at the cap last season. There are seven players making the jump from S80 to S81, bringing their TPE and maybe more from the offseason with them to the S81 Scarecrows. Here’s the breakdown of those returning seven, in terms of their TPE from S80. There are four returning forwards with combined TPE of 1092 (273 average) with none of them hitting the cap in S80. Next up is three returning defensemen with a combined TPE of 914(304.6 average) with none of them hitting the cap in S80. These seven had a TPE total of 2006 or 42.3 percent of the team’s total in S80.

Now let’s shift focus to breaking down the S81 roster and see where the TPE stacks up. First we’ll take a look at those returning players, how much TPE they’ve gained and where they sit now. The four returning forwards combine for a total of 1355 TPE (263 more than S80) for an average of 338.7. The three returning defensemen combine for a total of 1110 TPE (196 more than S80) for an average of 370. With as many vacant roster spots as the Scarecrows had coming into the S81 draft you’d really hope they possessed enough draft capital to fill out the roster. While they couldn’t quite fill the roster with new rookies during the draft they came close, selecting 8 new players from the draft to mostly fill their needs. The highest drafted position was to fill their forward needs, the filled all five vacancies. These draftees currently combine for 1061 TPE, an average of 212.2 Next highest seated position, for good reason, was goalie. The scarecrows picked up two with a combined TPE of 454, averaging out to 227. Lastly they picked up one defender currently showing a TPE of 226. “But Toaster! That’s only 13 skaters and 2 goalies” you might be saying. Hold on young one, the bread isn’t done. The Scarecrows topped off their roster with two free agent signings. They were both defensemen, with a combined TPE of 373 (186.5 average). Taking this further, diving deeper if you will, it looks like the returning 7 contribute 53.8% of the total, draftees contribute 38.2%, and the FAs contribute 8%.

Going from S80s team total TPE of 4739 to the S81s season opener team total TPE of 4579 it might seem like a downgrade. When you lose three at cap, and replace a bunch with rookies a drop is bound to happen. However the rookies are hungry to grow, and overall each player (not at cap) only needs 13 more TPE on average to reach and then exceed the S80 team. This looks to be the beginning of a promising few years for the Scarecrows.
