Reviewing Ottawa's Regular Season Stats - Deep Dive #1

Ottawa's chance at GLORY

The Ottawa Highlanders had an amazing season, despite choking on the last day and giving up the southern conference to the Maine Timber. The Highlanders finished with a 39-23-4 record, earning 82 points, second in the southern conference, and sixth in the entire SMJHL. The Highlanders have a difficult first round against the St. Louis Scarecrows, but the Highlanders have their win conditions set out.

Possibly one of the biggest reasons why Highlanders are where they are is their penalty kill. For the longest time, the Highlanders were hovering around the 80-85% mark and chilling as the best PK in the league. The Highlanders finished with a 78.9% PK. That's good enough for 7th in the league. They managed 10 SH goals, which is the fourth most in the league, and limited their opponents to only two SH goals, which is the least amount of SH goals allowed by any team this year. Pavel Mintyukov and Leo Carlsson especially were great on the PK. Pavel Mitnyukov finished with a +/- of 33, second best on the team, while Leo Carlsson finished with a +/- of 32, third best on the team

The Highlanders have one of the best back ends in the league. The Highlanders finished with a 30.94 SA/GP (shots against/Game played), second best in the league, and also a grand total of 207 GA, 3rd best in the league. 5/7 defenseman finished with a positive +/-, with the other two defensemen having a +/- of -1 and -3. The Highlanders also have one of the best goaltending tandems in the league. Both Goaltenders finished in the top 10 GAA, with Victor Bjork-Pejlikka finishing with a GAA of 2.91 in 23 games played, good enough for 4th in the league. Jeff Kirkstone III finished with a GAA of 3.22 GAA in 46 games played, good enough for 10 in the league. Jeff also had the most shutouts in the league with 5, and also finished with 25 wins, 4th most out of all goalies.

Just because they have an amazing defence, you should not count out their offence. Hotdog Lunch, Soobin, Leo Carlsson, and Optimus Autonomous all finished with more than a point per game. Hotdog lunch finished with a grand total of 95 points, 3rd in the league; 44 goals, 4th in the league; and 327 shots, by far the most in the league. Soobin also had a great second year, finishing with 91 points, 6th most in the league; a +/- of 46, 4th in the league, 52 assists, T9th in the league; and 39 goals, T9th in the league.

The Highlanders have been a very physical team this year, recording the third most hits per game behind Maine Timber and San Diego Tidal. Leo Carlsson leads the way with 149 hits, which is the 7th most in the league.

If the Highlanders have a weakness, or something they need to get better at if they want to succeed, it's their PP. they finished with a 20.7% PP, which isn't bad, but not great. Their PP is ranked 11th in the league.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
