Deep Dive #2–SMJHL playoffs, first round predictions
#1

For my second Deep Dive I thought I would take a look at the first round matchups of the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League playoffs and give my opinion on which teams will win.

***Northern Conference***
1. Quebec City Citadelles vs. 8. Great Falls Grizzlies.
The Citadelles won the regular season championship with a record of 44-18-1 while the Grizzlies finished last in the conference with a record of 20-41-5.  Not a great matchup here as with most in real life matchups.  Quebec City will win this series 4-1 because I think it will go five games.

2. Newfoundland Berzerkers vs. 7. Yukon Malamutes.
During the regular season the Berzerkers gave Quebec City a run for their money, finishing second overall in the league with a record of 44-19-3 while Yukon finished in seventh place in the conference.  Again, not a great matchup here between these two teams.  I think Newfoundland will win this series in four games.

3. Kelowna Knights vs. 6. Anchorage Armada
The Kelowna Knights had the third best record in the league this season with a record of 45-21-0 while the Armada finished with a record of 28-32-6.  On paper, this looks like an intriguing matchup but with the way these two teams played this season I would have to say that Kelowna will win this series four games to one.

4. Vancouver Whalers vs. 5. Thunder Bay Walleyes
As with every 4 vs. 5 matchup, at least in real life, this matchup could go either way.  Vancouver finished the season with a record of 42-21-3 while Thunder Bay ended up with a record just above .500 at 32-30-4.  In my own opinion, I think that Vancouver will win this series four games to two.

***Southern Conference ***

1. Maine Timber vs. 8. Detroit Falcons
The Maine Timber surprised me this season by finishing first in the Southern Conference with a record of 42-24-0, I really thought Ottawa would be better than where they finished.  Detroit is a rebuilding team and they finished with a record of 22-43-1, good for last place in the conference.  So therefore, Maine will win this series in four games.

2. Ottawa Highlanders vs. 7. St. Louis Scarecrows
Ottawa really surprised me this season when they finished second in the conference with a record of 39-23-4.  St. Louis is another team that is in rebuild mode. They finished with a record of 22-41-3.  Ottawa wins this series in four games.

3. Carolina Kraken vs. 6. Nevada Battleborn
Now we’re starting to get into the interesting matchups, as far as the Southern Conference goes.  Carolina finished the regular season with a record of 38-26-2 while Nevada had a record of 25-37-4.  This matchup, in my opinion, will go to Carolina, four games to two.

4. San Diego Tidal vs. 5. Colorado Raptors
Ok here we go with the 4 vs 5 matchup in the Southern Conference.  San Diego finished the season with a record of 36-27-3 and could very well have the league MVP on its roster.  Colorado on the other hand had a record of 27-34-5.  I believe this matchup will go to San Diego, four games to one.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
