Top 10 Rookies of the Season

(This post was last modified: 03-17-2025, 03:00 AM by Zinny. Edited 2 times in total.)

Today we are looking at the top 10 rookies of the season. There are many to pick from as this draft class was host to over 80 players.
This list is rather difficult to compile because how do you weigh the performance of a forward or defenseman against a goalie? Because this class had some impressive goalies. Another impressive feat of some of these rookies is the numbers they put up playing on teams on the bottom half of the standings.
Anyway, here is the top 10 rookies of season 82:

1. Koen Boekbinder of the Grizzlies. I had this guy going first overall in the draft and it looks like my projection was correct. He is the only rookie to score at more than a point per game pace. 68pts in 66 games. He also racked up a monster 51 assists during his rookie year.
2. Bartholomew Aittokallio Lorequavius of the Kelowna Knights. This unit of a defenseman picked up 55 points this season, but it's the defensive stats that really push him over the top here. A small 17 giveaways compared to a gigantic 64 takeaways. It seems the performance lives up to the name so far.
3. Jonny Hockey of Anchorage Armada takes the 3rd spot here. Unexpectedly thrust into a starting position when their former starter decided to go on an extended vacation, Jonny Hockey helped keep the Anchorage afloat finishing 10th in the league. Hockey regularly faced 40+ shots a game and typically posted good numbers. He finished 7th in goals saved above expected and 7th in save percentage.
4. Jean-Luc Gagnon of the Maine Timber takes 4th with 57 points and a +16. The most impressive part about his stats is that he only had 3 powerplay points, making him an even strength demon.
5. Greg Evil posted 51 points and a +28. Only 1 powerplay point. He also has 3 short handed goals to his name.
6. Chinweike H.I. Valentine-Okoli of the St. Louis Scarecrows. St Louis didn't win many games games this season. So for a rookie to put up 58 points is a very impressive feat.
7. Matt Smith of the Detroit Falcons was placed in a similarly worse situation than Chinweike Valentine by playing for a team that didn't win much. Despite this, he also put up 58 points.
8. Leon Dusty had a very admirable season with 24 goals and 30 assists. Playing for the Thunder Bay Walleye, he accomplished this feat with no time on the power play.
9. Patrick Rail of Anchorage Armada. Armada takes up 2 spots on this top 10. Rail tallied 53 points while like many of his draft class, not getting much of any power play time.
10. Kristaps Skalbergs of Thunder Bay Walleye led the rookies with 82 takeaways and only 16 giveaways. On top of those killer defensive stats, he also put up 44 points.

This was an incredibly competitive draft class. It will be exciting to see how these players develop and eventually enter the SHL.
