NWJHL Mock Draft: Round 1 by Mr. blackfish

by Mr. blackfish

. : Round 2 : .</div>

9. Whalers RW Benjamin Wong
With Salmelainen already on the left wing, the Whalers will look to make their top offense even more potent with the addition of Benjamin Wong. Nobody has climbed draft boards as much as Wong, a fact to be credited to an outstanding combine. The 20-year old from Toronto displayed quick skates, a smooth wrist shot, and some of the best passing of all in the draft class. Wong may not be the best player on his team but he stands to establish himself as the best set up man in Season 7 of the NWJHL.

10. :battalion: D Everett Taylor
In any other draft year, Everett Taylor is surely a 1st round pick; however, the likes of so many top 3 defenceman in this class push him to round 2. After adding their new offensive centerpiece at pick 2, the Battalion makes Taylor their weapon along the blueline. Taylor has a frame that is just right for the position and his laser slap shots from the point makes every scout chomp at the bit. Will play a huge role offensively for Boston but if he can improve his defense, he may end up being the steal of this draft.

11. Falcons C Teemu Kimiciek
After going defense in round 1, the Falcons will look for the best offensive value at pick number 11. Kimiciek was once regarded as a consensus 1st rounder; however, his stock took a big hit with a poor showing at the combine. The 6’3 Fin has all the raw talent to be a top offensive player but tends to disappear on the ice too often. Despite this fact, the Falcons believe their culture can inspire any player and their scouts believe Detroit is the one place where Kimiciek is motivated to play through his potential each night.

12. Whalers D Cole Reinart
The Whalers nightmares of lack of offensive production are over as they continue to reel in more and more potential goals with each draft pick. Cole Reinart’s passing and scoring ability is phenomenal but more importantly, he can play defense in front of the net better than any prospect in this class. Reinart put on a shooting clinic at the combine; however his footwork needs improvement. Expect the Whalers coaching staff to work diligently with Reinart on his skating and puck handling, potentially creating a total package of a defenceman.

13. :stags: C Quinton Johnso
Seattle’s deadline deals in Season 6 paid off with a championship; however, it was at the price of some Season 7 top picks. Regardless, pick number 13 is where the newly dubbed “Stags” finally get the chance to put the new sweaters on display, an honor which should go to Shane Kelly. Some scouts believe Kelly is higher on their board but it will be hard for Seattle to pass up the scoring potential of Johnso, in favor of the more rounded Kelly. With only 1 pick in the first 2 rounds, Seattle really needs to go with a player who will make it count and Johnso’s skill set makes him that player.

14. :impact: LW Jordan McArthur
The impact are another team who’ve patiently waited to draft and after a heart-breaking loss in the Season 6 final, the fans of Montreal are hungry for shot at redemption. What really makes this interesting is the regime change; bringing new uncertainty as to how the Impact will evaluate this year’s class and what priorities are. Jordan McArthur figures to be the best scorer left on the board at this point but he’s in no way a consolation. McArthur put on a shot clinic at the combine; nothing short of a outstanding hand-eye coordination and a quick stick.

<div align="center">[Image: vancouver_giants082509.jpg]</div>

15. :impact: LW Magnus Pulkkinen-Granlund
When you just aren’t sure what direction a team will go in next, you can’t go wrong with guessing next best available. It’s debatable whether or not Granlund is that guy but he can offer up some serious protection to pick number 14. Granlund is a two-way forward who moves very well for a 6’4 body. Carries a lot of potential as a grinding scorer and valuable on the PK.

16. Whalers C Yousuf Scherbluk
The Whalers already have 2 top line wingers in place so look for them to find the best centreman left on the boards. Scherbluk may not be an all star but when placed between Salmelainen and Wong, he doesn't have to be. In all fairness, his scoring potential is high and his ability to control the circle is even higher. The 17-year old from Ukraine needs to vastly improve his passing skills but his ability to win the draw should be enough for Vancouver to pull trigger.
------------------------------

<div align="center">. : Best Of The Rest : .</div>

G Samu Vitonen
The top goalie prospect out of Finland figures to be the first goalie taken in the draft. Butterfly goalie with solid reaction and amazing agility.

D Darian Scherbluk
A high 2nd round pick with outstanding ability but a ½ season suspension has decimated his draft stock. Whatever team is willing to take him and ride out the suspension will be handsomely rewarded come late season.

C Shane Kelley
Scouts are said to be very impressed with his work ethic and well roundedness; however, he doesn’t have one particular aspect of his game which stands out from the rest.

LW Blake Laflamme
Two-way player who can eat up a lot of valuable minutes but needs to improve his defense. Some scouts aren’t attracted by his 5’11 frame but he’s hard-nosed and above-average on the forecheck.

G Thegreat Martin
His style differs from Vitonen and some teams may like it more. Still, the market for goalies is small and guys like Martin may end up spending most of the season patiently waiting.

C Patrick Walsh
Has the potential to emerge as a solid player in the juniors. Decent puck hander, above-average scorer, second line potential.

C Chris McZehrl
A well rounded centreman who anchor a top offensive line if paired with the right kind of goal scorer.

C Swifte Schnieder
Good skater, high quality shooter, but didn’t leave scouts begging to see more at the combine. Has “value pick” written all over him, as we feel like he’s capable of so much more.

C Joe McKeil
A grinder from Germany who had excellent defense and a ton of potential. Maturity concerns as he is the youngest player in the draft class.

C Cody Hesse
An American born player who can skate and features an excellent shot. Needs to work on being more assertive on the ice; create opportunities.

RW Matthew Bolt
Looks like a sure thing on paper but tends to get lost on the ice. Some solid coaching and his ceiling as a scorer is high.

I don't know every member here THAT well. I did my best to compile facts but hell, look at everyone's activity below pick 16. You tell me who seems like a safer bet.

A big part of this is looking for guys who have a nice player build and activity to dictate that they will be doing tasks to improve that build. Obviously a guy with 2 posts doesn't make the cut. Granlund looks like an active member but if he left the site or something recently, how the hell would I know?
