A sad day in the SHL, 11 time all-star Aidan Richan finally hangs em up. :(

Richan started his career in S4 going undrafted in the NWJHL draft. He was then signed by Jackcrasher to play on the legendary Firebirds team with friends Witzel,Plaut,Sekhon and Fisher. It wasn't long before Richan was traded to the Whalers for defenseman James Ashton.

The S5 SHL draft finally arrived. Richan went 11th overall to the Calgary Dragons. People may not believe this, but at the time Calgary was near the bottom of Richan's draft rankings. He stuck with it though and ended up taking over the GM spot from long time GM Nathan D'Amigo. He went on to win back to back cups as GM of the Dragons including back to back GM Of The Year Awards.

It looked as if Richan,Nathan and Tsmith had created a dynasty, that was until the league/team had other thoughts. Erik Chisling, Jamie Rose, Kurtis Hunter, Sam Slade, and Will Secord all decided to retire. Not only this, but the league made a terrible decision and decided to expand. One of the new expansion GMs happened to be Dragon's superstar goalie Ryan Jesster. This left Calgary without a goalie, which crushed their hopes at having a dynasty. Richan had to make a drastic decision and handed the Dragon's GM spot over to Jesster, forcing Richan into early GM retirement.

A couple seasons later Richan was traded to Texas after playing 6 seasons in Calgary. Many thought Richan was going to leave via UFA to Texas, but that wasn't true at all. Richan told the team he wanted to return, but understood if they wanted to go in a younger direction. A few days later he was traded for young superstar defenseman Drake.

Richan only played 2 seasons in Texas, including one 70+ point season in which he won the Norris trophy. He also helped lead Texas to their first ever finals appearance, in which they were defeated by Edmonton in 7 games.

Once again Richan was on the trade block. This time traded to Toronto for veteran Daniel Malenfant. This was thought to be a 1 or 2 year rental as Richan was getting old, but ended up being an amazing trade as Richan ended up playing a steady 4 seasons with Toronto. Richan made the playoffs all 4 seasons with Toronto, including a trip to the finals in S16, which extended his playoff streak to 11 straight seasons. This remains the longest such streak in SHL history.
