Wolfpack Off-Season Report

Prior to the launch of Season 16, the New England Wolfpack management had high hopes and expectations for their club. It was with good reason that New England had these expectations, finishing first in the Eastern Conference standings just one year prior. The Pack came off a disappointment in the playoffs, falling to the underdog West Kendall Platoon in the seventh game of their opening round series. It was a very long summer in New England and just some subtle changes were made to improve the franchise's luck in Season 16.

The Wolfpack were determined to chance their luck in Season 16 and came away with one of the best regular seasons in recent memory, capturing the President`s Trophy for the first time in franchise history, and the most points in a regular season since the Season 10 Steelhawks and Dragons. They also finished with 41 wins, tying the Calgary Dragons Season 10 team for the record. The playoffs came around, and the Pack discovered that their first round opponent would be none other than the West Kendall Platoon. The first two games in New England were split, New England taking game one 3-2, and West Kendall taking game two 4-3. As the series shifted to Florida, the Pack pulled together for a 4-2 win in game three but dropped game four by a score of 4-3. Game five back in Boston was tight and went to overtime, Julien Marshall eventually ending it for West Kendall and giving them a 3-2 series lead. Game six was another tight affair and a defensive battle that New England won 2-1. It was dejavu all over for the Wolfpack team again as this was the exact same way that the Platoon were to able to defeat them the season before. New England came out flat and were defeated 3-0 and headed home for another long summer.

In the off-season, general manager, John McBride had enough of first round playoff exits and decided to make some big changes. The first move was to ship off all-star goaltender, Edwin Ask to the Minnesota Chiefs with a Season 17 second round selection (Thor Ludvigsen) in exchange for blue-chip goaltender, Jermaine Tennyson and a Season 18 fourth round selection. The next move was to deal Quentyn Blackfyre, New England's first selection from the Season 16 draft, along with a Season 17 first round selection in exchange for established power forward, Erik Lehner, a Season 18 third round selection (later dealt to Los Angeles), and Season 19 third round selection. The last deal made was acquiring a decent back-up goaltender and pending UFA, Noah Robinson from the Seattle Riot for a Season 18 fourth round selection who was later signed to a contract extension.

Season 17 is right around the corner and the Wolfpack are primed for another great regular season, taking nearly the same team as last onto the ice. Some would argue that this edition of the team is even better than last season, so it will be exciting to observe how they fair. One thing that the Wolfpack will want to do is get that monkey off their back in the playoffs. This team has all the talent in the world but if they cannot get over that hump, they will never be Challenge Cup Champions. The players in the locker room are sick of losing in the playoffs and focusing on next year and it has shown in training camp. The players are playing with swagger and are saying all the right things. The time is now or never for this Wolfpack team and I have a feeling that it will be now.
