From Bust To Superstar, how big is his award case going to need to be?

Ideen Fallah Trophy - Award Given To MVP as Voted By Award Committee

Winner : Sean Leonidas

Lead the league in scoring. Lead the top team in the league in scoring. Also had to take a leadership role on a team that was full of rookies on the back end and in net. Another point in his favour is that he plays center. Possibly the most important position as a forward, he’s in charge of playing a full 200 foot game along with getting possession of the puck right off of the face-off. Leonidas was 2nd overall in the league in terms of face-off percentage. Centers with over one thousand face-offs taken, Leonidas was tops in the league. With ~56% of face-offs won, Leonidas is the all-around star center that any team could ask for. Also one of the few top 10 scorers that was not double shifted. He was more effective with less ice time then the other top scorers that had more ice time.

Runner-Ups : Sterling Knight & Clay Parker & Etienne Modano

When you lead your teams in scoring, that’s a pretty big part of the team. These two were the only players that had 50 points or higher and were not on the Knights. Parker averaged the second most time on the ice on his team. Sterling Knight had the most time on ice for his team while leading his team in points. Knight also lead the league in goals which is no easy feat with Parker and Leonidas all playing well. Both the Falcons and Whalers did very well proving that Knight and Parker didn’t score goals on bottom feeding teams.

Late Addition: Modano. One of four players to hit the 50 point mark this season. Wasn't double shifted and played on the 2nd line. He put up massive production and took advantage of match ups like a pro. Deserves recognition for a great season.

Dark Horse: Chico Four-Byrde

The number 1 center for the Detroit Falcons. Won ~53% of his face-offs and was 10th in the league in face-off percentage. 5th in scoring in the league for centers. If you want to take in his playoff resume than that’s where Four-Byrde really picks up some votes. He nearly put up 2 points per a game with 19 points in 10 games. Won nearly 51% of his draws in playoffs and was a big part in eliminating the defending 4 Star Champs in 5 games. Regular season he was above average, in the playoffs he stepped up his game.

What a first year for the old man

Mathias Chouinard Award - Award Given To Top GM

Winner: JRT Of Kelowna

It’s hard to deny a he had some good send downs come back to Kelowna. With the amount of turnover in the SMJHL you can only judge a GM on his line making, drafting and free agent pick-ups. So JRT came into Kelowna as a first time GM. With the 2nd overall pick he took Kwik, 11th overall Harter, 14th overall Moosejaw Boudreau, 22nd overall Arthur Nsenga, 23rd overall Tanner Carter, 26th overall Danny Phantom, 35th overall Adam Demko, 38th overall Vladimir Tarasenko and 47th overall Gino Lucia. Mariusz Kwik lead rookies in points, the league in assists and defensemen in points. Successful pick. Harter struggled a bit out of the gate but solidified himself as a starter and was great in the playoffs. Moosejaw, not the sexiest pick or the most active player but was solid as a defensive defenseman. 4th in the league in +/- to solidify his defensive presence. Nsenga turned out to be a PP goal specialist while Carter turned out to be a great part of the Smirnov/Carter 3rd line duo.

Add in a 4 Star Cup, President’s Trophy, and the pick-up of Ales Smirnov who ended up with 4 game winning goals, JRT had a hell of a first year as GM and deserves to be rewarded for his efforts.

Runner-Up: Steelhead77 GM of Detroit

2nd best team in the league and leader of the Eastern Conference is a big deal. If not for a fast defeat in the Final he could be the winner of the GM of the Year Award. His drafting was spot on this year with Bubba Nuck, Nils Wahlstrom, Thomas Anderson, Alex Fischer, Tucker O’Callahan, Zach Morgan and Big Manious making contributions to the team.

Dark Horse: coolstar87 GM of Vancouver

Hard to say who the dark horse is but the best bet would be the GM who forced the 4 Star Champs into a close 7 game series. He also nailed his two first round picks by taking PLL and Myers.

Is having a star defender as a partner a disadvantage?

Quilha Agante Trophy - Award Given To Top Defenseman

Winner: Mariusz Kwik

Seems like a homer vote right? Hard not to give it to the defender who lead defense and the rookies in points. He was also second for defense in +/- and the only defenseman in the top 10 in League scoring. There’s not much else you can really add base the award on. Sure Kwik didn’t lead the league in goals, but someone has to pass the puck and leading an all-rookie defense with no other actives on the blueline. Add in the two rookie goalies who needed some help before Harter took control and lifted off, and you have the best defenseman.

Runner-ups: Drew Myers and Mike Abell

Tough to decide the runner-ups but these two formed the top pairing in Vancouver and were dynamite with Mike Abell hitting the 39 point marker and Myers hitting the 40 point marker. They were pretty much a poor mans version of Suter-Weber. The knocks on them are they had themselves plus send down Kudryashov to give each other support. Not to mention they also had Hunter Wong in net, the best goalie in the league.

Dark Horse: Brandon Pomery

The defenseman leader in goals. He played on the 2nd worst team in the SMJHL but was one goal away from a 20 goal season from the back end. He was also a PP machine potting 12 of his goals on the PP. One of his biggest downsides was his lack of PK minutes as he only registered 5 on the season along with -9 +/- rating. He didn’t have the support that Kwik or the two Whalers defenders had so that’s why he is a darkhorse.

From Winger To Center, Worth An Award?

Brandon Holmes Trophy - Award Given To Top Defensive Forward

Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Getting tired of Kelowna Knights players being the projected winner? Would have been nice if there was more competition but I digress. What makes Dolph Ziggler the Top Defensive Forward? For one he was the leader in the league in +/- with a +24 rating. Tied for the league lead in hits with 112 hits on the season. Ziggler anchored the top penalty kill unit on the team that was 3rd in penalty kill percentage. To put the cherry on top of the cake, he’s a center that is 7th overall in the league for face-off percentage. That’s a lot of face-off’s won, especially on the PK where he needed to be at his best.

Runner-ups: Patrick Satan and Sterling Knight

A top defensive forward needs to be able to win face-offs, shut down the opposing PP and not be scored on even strength. Satan played first line center on the 2nd best team in the Eastern Conference. He shouldered the face-off load taking the 3rd most face-off’s in the league and winning ~53% of them. He as 2nd on his team in PK minutes with only defender Pentecost playing more than him. Lastly, he was a +16 which is the highest rating a non-Knight player had in the league. Knight didn’t take face-offs but he did play his fair share on a very powerful PK. He tied Ziggler for the league lead in hits and had two shorthanded goals to boot.

Dark Horse: Merit Conska

Merit “The Tonka” Csonka. Tied for 2nd in the league in +/- and lead the Knights in penalty kill minutes. He also played 2nd line with Ziggler helping him shut down opposing teams that tried to get a line-up advantage on the Knights.

By and far the best goalie in the regular season

Tom Corcoran Trophy - Award Given To Top Goalie

Winner: Hunter Wong

Finally a projected winner that isn’t a Knights player. Had a big lead in both the Save Percentage and Goals Against Average categories. Tied with Karlensons in shutouts with two. Tied for the league lead in wins as well with 18 while playing less games then every other starter in the league not named Mark Harter. Combine that with the fact his team went 7 games with the eventual 4 Star Cup champs and finished second in the Western Conference, Wong is as much of a lock as possible.

Runner-Up: Rob Pressen

Starting goalie of the 4 Star Cup finalists and Eastern Conference winners in both regular season and playoffs. Second in SV% in the league along with being tied for wins in the regular season. Pressen was a big part of the Falcons and he also faced 17 penalty shots in the regular season. That is more than every other starter in the league.

Dark Horse: Valdemorts Karlensons

The rookie goalie for the Montreal Impact. Played all 40 games for his team this season. Despite playing on probably the worst team in the SMJHL, he ended up 3rd in Save Percentage in the league. One last final plus for Karlensons is that he put up two shutouts. If he doesn’t win this year, watch for him to be a strong contender for it next season.

Karlensons is used to being on underdog teams

Vyacheslav Onoprienko Trophy- Award given to the most underated

Winner: Valdemorts Karlensons

If he played for a better team than his numbers would look nicer and would have had a playoff run to solidify his name in the upcoming draft. Probably the 2nd best goalie in the upcoming SHL draft and he didn’t even have a strong team to showcase his talents.

Runner-Up: Mike Abell

I know he’s a runner up for the Best Defenseman Award but I haven’t seen too much talk about him otherwise. A 39 points rookie season while being a plus player and playing on the top pairing is a pretty big deal. He gets it done without much recognition around the SMJHL.

Dark Horse: Ales Smirnov

Maybe a bit of a homer vote. However he was tied for 2nd in the league for Game Winning Goals. And he did that while playing 3rd line minutes. He’s primarily a playmaker and didn’t put up a lot of points this season which is why he is a dark horse. Probably won’t win but deserves to have his name out there.

Was Harter Good Enough?

Brodie Witzel Trophy - Playoffs MVP

Winner: Sean Leonidas

He didn’t end up with the playoff lead in points but he was every bit important to the Knights as any other player was for their team. Leonidas’ Game 7 hat-trick sealed the deal as long as the Kelowna Knights won the 4 Star Cup. The Knights won in 5 games, when the games really mattered, Leo and team took care of business.

Runner-Ups: Nils Wahlstrom and Chico Four-Byrde

This dynamic duo scored tons of goals. Especially in their 5 game route of the St. Louis Scarecrows. They started off the Final strong with Wahlstrom especially lighting it up in game 1 but the offense and team fizzled out too fast and they were ousted in five game by the Knights. If the series had gone 7 games then one of these two would win but the series didn’t last long enough to give it to a player on the losing team.

Dark Horse: Mark Harter

The best goalie in the SMJHL playoffs. The only goalie with a <0.900SV% and the winning goalie of the 4 Star Cup. Only one other goalie had more shots than Harter and it was Wong. Harter was also the oly goalie with a sub 3.00GAA .This was Harter’s coming out party. The question is was his goaltending good enough to take attention away from the offensive stars?

Thanks for reading everyone. This is all my opinion. I did leave some awards out that I thought I didn’t have enough information on. Good luck to my fellow S22 SHL draft eligible players.

Good read, I'd like to think you could argue myself above Myers/Abell due to my lack of offensive support and goals > assists.

Honestly it was close, I just think that your team/situation kind of brought you down a bit. If the committee voted and you ended up in 2nd I wouldn't be surprised.

You can call me Anthony Davis.
