Chomping the Bit Colt ready to be let loose
#1

It was an early day in Season 20, before even the preseason even started when Dean Colt was approached by then New England GM, Erik Chisling.

"I am going to need you to stay up this season and convert to center, are you ok with that?"

Dean responded quickly, stating what ever the team needed is what he would become. So training on faceoffs and a move from right wing to center was in store, improving enough to make the big squad in his first season where he played a mainstay role as the third lines center and penalty kill specialist.

In his rookie season, Season 20.

G - 4
A - 9
+/- -20
PIM 20
Hits 61
Shots 52
PPP 3
FO% 50.06%
Stars 0-0-2
P/20 - 0.32

An unimpressive first season, but one you'd come to expect from the role being played. The worst of this, was the horrendous minus twenty rating, but there would be improvement on that the following season.

Season 21

G - 4
A - 5
+/- -7
PIM 10
Hits 39
Shots 35
PPP 1
FO% 56.11%
Stars 0-0-1
P/20 - 0.24

As you can see, the differential rating improved greatly all the way up to minus seven, which was a great improvement over the previous season but was one of only two improvements, the other being a faceoff percentage of 56.11%, the highest of Colts career so far. Besides that, tying the previous total in goals and lowing the assists by four gave Dean a paltry nine points on the season, low penalty mins would be an improvement but you'd expect more from someone playing a physical style, you'd expect more hits as well, dropping twenty two over the previous season, now normally that'd come with more offense but with seventeen less shots, that was down as well. All in all, Season 21 was not a good year for Dean.

Season 22

G - 2
A - 6
+/- +1
PIM 29
Hits 19
Shots 23
PPP 0
FO% 54.00%
Stars 0-0-0
P/20 - 0.44

And this season was no different, after missing 27 games due to an agent error, Dean managed to in around a half season put up expected numbers with goals and assists, two and six respectively, but the thing here that made Dean happy was the fact he was a plus player for the first time in his career at plus one. Low on the penalty minutes but unfortunately on the hitting and shots as well. Deans faceoff percentage dropped as well, from 56.11 to 54.00 and he did not record a single power play point all season, now did he receive a star of the game nomination. Overall, a season he'd rather forget about.

Season 23

G - 5
A - 12
+/- 1
PIM 42
Hits 85
Shots 66
PPP 3
FO% 53.42%
Stars 0-1-1
P/20 - 0.33

This season was one of improvement in nearly all areas, setting personal bests in goals with five and assists with twelve, a career high seventeen points and again recording a plus one rating but a few more penalty minutes from edgy play and roughing up the opponent with eighty five hits. Being a nuisance around the net as well, almost tripling previous shots on net and three power play points during a few shifts on the man advantage was nice to see, a small dip in faceoff percentage wasn't, down to 53.42%, centering the third line yet again with a dirth of talent loaded up on the top two, the Wolfpack won the Cup, where Dean stepped up in the playoffs and produced alongside Kovalenko, very off the mark given his regular season stats but was this a sign of things to come, we had to wait until the following season to find out the answer.

Season 24

G - 11
A - 26
+/- -4
PIM 58
Hits 112
Shots 106
PPP 17
FO% 52.20%
Stars 2-3-3
P/20 - 0.58

Answer he did, with the departure of O'Callahan, Colt saw himself placed front and center of the top line and he didn't disappoint thankfully. With eleven goals, twenty six assists and thirty seven points, Colt had a good season. Defensively, a plus four, the highest rating of his career and fifty eight penalty minutes from playing a physical game as well, with a hundred and twelve hits, the increased goals coming from a hundred and six shots, a full forty over his previous high of sixty six. The big surprise here though, was the powerplay effectiveness, with seventeen power play points after compiling only seven in the previous four seasons. A small drop in faceoff percentage yet again, mostly from playing against much better on average centers on the first then the third line, was the lone negative on the stat line.

With those five seasons notched, I took a look at the averages.

Per Season Average

G - 5.2
A - 11.6
+/- -4.25
PIM 31.8
Hits 63.2
Shots 76.4
PPP 4.8
FO% 53.16%
Stars 0.4/0.8/1.4
P/20 - 0.382

Then, this past season happened, where Colt finally broke out.

Season 25

G - 5.2 -> 18 Goals
A - 11.6 -> 29 Assist
+/- -4.25 -> +10
PIM 31.8 -> 59
Hits 63.2 -> 100
Shots 76.4 -> 146
PPP 4.8 -> 14
FO% 53.16% -> 54.01%
Stars 0.4/0.8/1.4 -> 6-4-0
P/20 - 0.382 -> 0.74

Overall, Dean has improved in each and every category since the previous season, destroying his career averages and previous highs left, right, and center, finishing the season on a high note being awarded the 1st Star of the Week after putting up 9 goals and 14 assists in 16 games, with a plus eight rating as well.

After modeling his game after previous legends, Dean had this to say when asked about his career so far.

Interview With the amazing season you just had, do your see your name being placed alongside the players whom you modeled your play after, O'Callahan and Dar?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, one good season, one amazing season for me personally, that's not enough to put me in those talks yet.

But it's a good start.

While it would be good for the team, I wouldn't mind seeing Colt knock out a few people in a fight.

Well met. Although you've done something like this every season I've been here -- and I've agreed with your sentiments every time, too -- you've now truly made a case for breakout player of the year. Fingers crossed for you.
