In this edition of Prospect Spotlight, we'll be looking at some of the Defensemen that will be available in the upcoming SMJHL draft, which is just 2 days away.

Alexis Metzler - Offensive Defenseman - Bismarck, ND



Alexis Metzler tried to explain his Harpy stat to this reporter, and we're still unable to figure it out for ourselves. That fun fact aside, we'll give our overview of Metzler. Metzler is an offensive defenseman - and no, that doesn't mean he insults people. He is an excellent puck mover, able to effectively break out of his own zone, as well as find the open man in the offensive zone to generate scoring opportunities. For all that offensive ability, he's still able to clog up the lanes in the defensive zone and frustrate opponents. We like him.

Ryan Vas - 2-Way Defenseman - Vienna, Austria



Were it that Ryan Vas used his size to absolutely demolish opponents, we would nickname him the Terminator right now, and make references during this overview, but that is unfortunately not the case. Vas prefers to use his stick to strip opponents and get a breakout started, as opposed to using his size advantage. That said, he is excellent at blocking the shooting lanes in his own end, and had a deadly slapshot that he isn't afraid to fire from the blue line. We like him, though we want him to start demolishing people.

Alec Derin - Enforcer - Rochester, MI



What would a SMJHL draft class be without its share of enforcers? A bunch of wimps, that's what. And right here we have Alec Derin, billed tough guy entering he draft stage. His physical game is excellent, and he knows how to fight with the big boys, and isn't afraid to stand up for his team. He does like to get under the skin of the other team, and, we're sure, will do an excellent job of keeping the cheap stuff in check. We love him.
