Okay so I've been thinking about the whole Deplorables thing and considering their take on the matter. From what I gather they didn't want to participate in the SMJHL but since they kind of had to they decided to all join one team so they could share a locker room. I think I've got that generally correct. To be honest it's totally legit for them to want to be on the same team.
So then I started wondering why I felt that what they did was wrong... I guess it came from the idea that they were just using a loophole in the system to get what they wanted. Pretty clever to be honest. So I used a loophole in the system to get what I wanted.
THEN I started thinking about the SMJHL draft. I think the SMJHL draft is pretty pointless. You're taking people with similar TPE levels and very often there is little knowledge of the player before the draft. You're basically gambling on any player because in the end the SMJHL sim is somewhat random with less TPE variance.
So why not abolish the SMJHL draft and move to an entirely free agent based system? A new player joins as a free agent, they are free to sign with any team. Players recreating have the freedom to select their locker room, and newbies still have the fun of being courted by the GMs. You play your one season and then you get to enter the SHL draft. Completely level playing field. The thing is newbies join and think they have to go through the draft and don't realize they could hold out and create after the draft and pick whatever team they like. Newbies would no longer have that disadvantage.
Just a thought I had. The importance of the SMJHL draft does not compare to the SHL draft at all. Teams can only stack themselves so much, we have caps and budgets to prevent anything too crazy from happening.

I mean it could work. It'd make SMJHL GMs become much more savvy negotiators though. The problem really arises in the form of a trade "currency". Right now to strengthen a team in the SMJHL you can trade the rights to a pick to another team.
Without this currency you run into a stagnation of players. I just think the idea of a draft is important to the league.
Even in the NHL players who are friends don't end up on the same team. Hell, for the Vancouver Canucks to get both of the Sedins, who are literally brothers, they had to do some skillful trading. Teams shouldn't get large amounts of assets for free. Just because a large group of players wants to join there.
The winner of the S31 SMJHL draft was Detroit. They got 7 first round picks in a draft that has 8 first round picks. There needs to be a way this is closed.
I have heard whisperings that they might be working on something like this. But at this point. Free Agency adds in too many variables for keeping a competitive SMJHL.
This could work with recreates, but with newbies they could just be taken advantage of and are likely to be indifferent to where they go anyway.
