Using fantasy results to view the league

Code:
Word Count 717 with a spreadsheet that I don't know how to count

So I did a thing.

This started out as a curiosity project just for myself to see if there was a definitive difference in final rankings for each draft pick slot over the past 5 seasons of our fantasy league. As I went on I realized that this is a great way to view the league as a whole. I have made some errors as I am not a smart man, and there are areas I would like to improve as well if I do this again in the future. I am hoping that some of you can take what I have made and make some questions or even answers for yourself, and I am open to those questions and criticisms as well.

So what did I do? I went back and looked at the past 5 seasons and compared in what place each of the 8 draftees placed based on their original picking order. I also added in who the #1 pick was overall, why I did that, I will get into later. Below that are the high score, and low score and the spread between them. I did not think to add this information until later when I was stalking other threads and saw a discussion on TPE inflation. After some thought I added this information to hopefully get an understanding and a determination on that question, are the top players in the league getting better? In the future I would like to try to keep track of the TPE of the first overall at the time of the draft. I think this would help understand if there is a difference in skill in the higher levels between skaters and goalies, or if top players are earning more TPE than their counterparts in the past.

First thing first I want to address is what my assumptions were going into the project.

1. The first overall will have an advantage over the rest. This was based off of the idea that they will be able to pick the best player overall.

2. There will not be a difference between the top scores between S31 and the other 4 seasons. I have only been in the league for two seasons, so understand that that is the lens through which I see the league, S30 and S31.

I really only had two assumptions. As I went I started to see a few patterns. I will go over a few now, and some I wont address because I feel there isn’t enough information to warrant discussion.

1. During S30 and S31, if you selected anyone other than Garbonzo and Mczerhl in S31, or Garbonzo and Kane in S30, as the #1 pick you were guaranteed to take 8th place. It wasn’t until S30 that this trend started with only 2 viable #1 picks overall. In S29 it wasn’t until Group 12 that there was a repeat #1 pick. I don’t know what to make of this, but could it be a widening gap between the very best and the rest?

2. The best results came out of the 3rd-5th draft spots which is contrary to my initial thoughts. The overall difference in results for each slot is not that large, but large enough to be of interest.

3. There is in fact a difference between the average score of each groups winners for S31 and the rest of the seasons. S31 showed the highest average score with multiple winners over 1800. On top of this the 8th place average score was also increasing.

4. Whoever made the decision to have the draft thread and the update thread be the same, is the best. Having to navigate two different threads to find the information I needed was why I stopped at S27. I couldn’t do it anymore. To add to this, thank you to everyone who posted the final scores in the thread and not just link the sheet. The sheets are reused each season and there are a few groups who I could not get data for due to this.

I have no deep insight here. I have done some research, and I hope you all can use it or find it entertaining at a minimum. I will open the floor to any questions regarding this research or any other topic.
