Portland Inter-Squad Skills Competition Pre-Game Coverage

----A graphic flashes behind the anchors of the Portland Admirals Logo----

Anchor: While the ever outstanding Portland fan base has stuck with their team through it all, Admirals management recently came up with an idea to both reward them for their dedication while at the same time showing off some of the skill currently being cultivated by their organization. On a day completely dedicated to the fan base involving free entry, food, prizes, and games galore, most current Portland Admirals players and recent draftees (those of which are still in the SMJHL) will be split into two teams and compete in a variety of skill competitions.

----Cut to floor reporter----

Reporter: Thanks guys. I’m currently here at the completely packed Moda Center, which in not too long will be the site the first ever Portland Inter-Squad Skills Competition—man, talk about a tongue twister. Today the Portland Admirals’ players and draftees currently in the system will be trying to show off many of their fundamental skills, all the way from their skating speed to breakaway creativity. I’ve recently been informed of player list for each of the two teams competing here today. Without further ado I bring you the:

Black Team
G- Kyle Wahlgren
RW-Reed Laing
RW- Nick Leier
LW- Nathan Russett
LW- Mike Ross
C- Beau Bent
C- Eugene Feist
C- Alex Reed
C- Inigo Cook
D- Colin Banning
D- Barak Obrana
D- Shea Robinson
D- Ernesto Castro

Now THAT is a strong team. We’ve got a fantastic up and coming goalie in Kyle Wahlgren, a player who is simply known as a sheer force on the wing in Reed Laing, a recent Toronto import who’s looking to make a big impact for Portland in Colin Banning, and let’s not forget Portland’s S31 breakout star in Beau Bent. Together they should make a fantastic showing for all of us tonight. Now moving on. If your favorite player wasn’t on the list above, then I guess you can be certain they’re on the yellow team.

Yellow Team
G- Tyler No Nerves
RW- Jacob Renninger
RW- Jean Girard
LW- Isaac Kaiser
LW- David Dvorak
C- Geronimo Otto
C- Cikgnar Konstantinov
C- Teodors Cukurs
C- Fredrik Zavstrom
D- Kelly Rivet
D- Max Weber
D- Noctis Caelum
D- Mattias Wahlstrom

Well luckily for the fans, not so luckily for the black team, it seems everybody has been divided up pretty evenly for tonight. Coming to you ready to win it for the yellow team are defensive monsters like Kelly “Ready to Block Anything” Rivet, you’d think we could come up with a better nickname, but studio budget cuts hit us hard in the writing department. We’ve also got two of the strongest prospects in all of the SMJHL, Max Weber and Teodors Cukurs, who seem to be ready to join the Admirals at a moment’s notice with the way they’ve been playing and developing recently. Finally let’s not forget about strong skating winger Isaac Kaiser, who we’ll hopefully be hearing more from in a bit.

Now I am excited, there were a lot of different ways the management could have divided up these teams but to be honest I can’t think of a better way to have done so. It should be a nail biter folks.

Now that we know our teams, we can introduce our competitions for the day.

First we’ve got the “Most Powerful Shooter” competition. This competition involves exactly what it sounds like. Players will be shooting a puck that lies mere feet from the net as hard as they can. Our sensors will pick up the exact speed that they hit it into the net, whoever hits the hardest gets to take home the hardware. Your competitors for this competition are:

Black Team
Barak Obrana
Beau Bent

Yellow Team
Mattias Wahlstrom
Noctis Caelum

Next we’ve got a favorite event of mine, the “Anything Goes Breakaway”. Three players from each team will take turns using whatever tricks they have up their sleeves to shoot the puck in the net on a breakaway. Players are welcome to use whatever they feel is necessary, be it a hockey stick, young child, Zamboni, and so on. Players will be awarded points not only for getting the puck into the net, but also for the style in which they do so. The competitors for this event are:

Black Team
G- Kyle Wahlgren
Eugene Feist
Reed Laing
Ernesto Castro

Yellow Team

G- Tyler No Nerves
Jacob Renninger
Geronimo Otto
Jean Girard

Third we’ve got what should make for a very interesting competition this year, the Skating Relay. While traditionally a “fastest skater” competition, the guys upstairs thought they’d make it interesting and add a relay element. Team members must skate as fast as they can from one end of the ice to the other, picking up a hockey stick and puck resting on the boards. As they come back, they must navigate their way around a series of slaloming cones without losing control of the puck. As they clear the last cone they must shoot the puck into the net, which in turns give their next teammate the go ahead to start skating. The competitors for this event are:

Black Team
Colin Banning
Nick Leier
Shea Robinson

Yellow Team
Teodors Cukurs
Cikgnar Konstantinov
Isaac Kaiser

Our final challenge of the night comes in the form of the Skills Challenge Relay. This one’s got quite a bit going on, so make sure you pay attention. First, team members will be standing at the blue line with pucks at their feet. They must shoot the puck into their net through a whole just wide enough to fit it. After they’ve done that, they must race over to the net and get another puck, chipping it from the ice into a trash can located somewhere near the blue line. Finally, the skaters must race to the other end of the ice and hit a puck, with the shooting slot now removed, into the net, signaling their next teammate in line to begin. The competitors for this event are:

Black Team

Nathan Russett
Alex Reed
Mike Ross
Inigo Cook

Yellow Team
Kelly Rivet
David Dvorak
Fredrik Zavstrom
Max Weber

With such fun events as those, it should certainly make for an interesting day for the fans. While they’re certainly ecstatic, we wanted to catch up with a couple of the Admirals to see what this night meant for them.

---cut to another floor reporter talking to Jacob Renninger---

Reporter:
Hi I’m here on the ice at the Moda Center with Jacob Renninger. Jacob, I know you don’t have too much time before you have to go suit up for the games today, but let me just ask you this. What do these games mean to you, and what do you think they mean to the fans?

Jacob Renninger: Well I’d like to start with what I think they mean to the fans, because that’s really what this day is all about. I’m a newbie to the Admirals and the SHL itself but all these guys *gestures to the crowd* have really taken me to be one of their own. They feed me and the guys the energy we need night after night, which you know is especially important to us since we know Portland’s been going through a bit of a rough stretch. We’re a bunch of young guys and aren’t near where I hope we will be one day not too far in the future, but regardless all of these amazing fans have shown their outstanding dedication to the team. I think that’s really what it’s all about, just giving back to the fans and showing them that us as the players are just as dedicated to making them proud as they are dedicated to seeing us battling night after night.

Reporter: Thank you Jacob. Oh! Skating right by us comes another winger for the Admirals, Isaac Kaiser. Isaac, let me ask you a question I just asked Jacob a minute ago. What do you expect from these games today, and what do you think they mean to the fans?

Isaac Kaiser: Yeah, the guys will be going during the game. It'll be more for the fans than for us, as part of our thanks for sticking by supporting the team over the years. Y'know, I'm just hoping my team will come out on top, obviously, I'm a pretty competitive guy just like any other hockey player. But again, it's for the fans and less for us, but I really don't mind it. Hey but I'm pretty psyched to be in it, especially to have the opportunity to be participating in the Skating Relay, I think it’ll play to my strengths as a hockey player. I'm looking to chirp the living hell outta the guys though, especially Banning. Ten bucks says the guy caves under pressure, hahahaha.

Reporter: Well thanks for talking to me, lucky for you Colin Banning is also partaking in the skating relay on the opposite team as you, so that should make for a real battle out there. Best of luck, all of us here look forward to seeing you guys compete in what should be a fun day.

---cut to anchor desk with admirals logo behind---
Anchor: Well that’s a wrap on our pre-event coverage, we want to thank everybody who tuned in. We’re just going to take a short break and then we’ll be right back here reporting and micing up some players with the beginning of the Portland Inter-Squad Skills Competition.
