Period 1

The game began with St. Louis taking an early trip to the box, Hemanis Villy was called down for holding at 1:03 after getting beat in his own zone. The tone of the game was set early in favor of Kelowna. They were just too fast for the Crows, the Knights controlled the flow of the game and didn't allow St. Louis to have any time with the puck.

Robert Haugen was called for hooking and put the Scarecrows on the man advantage, but their PP couldn't coordinate and failed to hit the net once.

John Langabeer scored the first goal of the season for Kelowna at 11:35 in the first on a feed from Vasily Horvat and Trev Legend. That was the start to a great night for Langabeer and Horvat who went on to add two more points to their score sheets in the home opener.

St. Louis surrendered another goal just over a minute later. at 12:49 Leafer Rielly hooked up with Ambrose Syrjanen, and Eddie Andrezjeck on a nice backdoor feed that left Rielly with a gaping net to pound home his first of the season as Wagner was sprawling on the other side of the crease.

St. Louis managed to kill off a hooking penalty by Charles Walker just minutes after giving up a two goal lead, but it was all Kelowna in the first- raining fire down upon Wagner 13 shots for the Knights! Just 4 for the Scarecrows. Sad. The Knights were not done scoring either, just as the period was winding down Halfdan Thorstein scored at 19:13 with assists coming from Janis Døro, and Robin Wexter.

Horvat scored his 2nd of the night and 3rd point of the game on the powerplay at 19:08 in the 2nd. Knouse again assisting Horvat and this time Lykke Bergfalk getting in on the scoring action for Kelowna.

Period 3

Somehow just four seconds into the third period Cory Knouse beat Haapanen from the neutral zone for John Langabeer and Knouse's third points of the night to put an exclamation mark on Kelowna's blowout victory. St. Louis pushed back and had 3x the shots in the period as the Knights but couldn't even get one past Thompson.

A fuck ton of penalties came in the third.

Unsung Hero:

My personal unsung hero of the game goes to Miguel Sanchez. The rookie draft pick of the Knights had logged just under 20 minutes and ended up a plus 2. Sanchez also added 4 hits and 2 shot blocks of his own. A pretty good start to a career.

Story of the Game:

The Kelowna Knights came to play and the Scarecrows were just not ready for the defending champions. In the first period Jimmy Wagner had to face 13 shots and had to capitalize on 3 off them. While taking some gas back, the 15th shot of the evening was good for the fourth goal and Wagner was pulled of the ice. His replacement Haapanen didn't do much better. With 2 goals against on 9 shots, it clearly shows the St. Louis defense needs to start helping their goaltenders more.

Turning Point of the Game:

The turning point of this game, in my opinion, was the 2nd goal scored by Kelowna. St. Louis had played them tough throughout the first half of the first period- so even after giving up a goal in the 12th minute, things were anything but over for St. Louis. But... to give up a second goal so quickly after the first, changed the entire complexion of this game- especially for the Scarecrows' second forward and defensive line to give it up against the 3rd forwards/1st defensive pairing for Kelowna. Here's how it happened:

The play started on a faceoff following an offisdes. Fletcher Carric of St. Louis actually won the draw, and moved it back to Nate Akeson. Akeson somehow managed to loose the puck, and that's when things started to go downhill... Leafer Rielly collected the puck and looked to Ambrose Syrjanen in the Scarecrow zone. The ensuing pass to Wilhelm Huber was followed by a shot- but Anatoly Yanovich had done a great job back checking after the pass, and got in position to block the effort. Adriana Starosta chased down the loose puck to keep position on Kelowna's stick, and despite the fact that it appeared St. Louis had recovered, a quick 3 pass sequence ended with Leafer Rielly beating Wagner on a snap shot.

The goal horn at that point signaled the real end of the game for St. Louis, despite having another 47:11 left to play in the game.

Vasily Horvat had a pretty sick game... but what do you think about getting your ass handed to you by Brett Kennedy? As for the rest of you, St. Louis, maybe you should take Kennedy's approach a little more universally... it might save you from getting demolished in the future.

3 stars

1. John Langabeer- Langy has been great this game. He registered 3 points with a goal in 4 shots. He was a +3 and 22 for 36 in the faceoff circle. Clearly the 1st star.

2. Cory Knouse- Knouse was the linemate for Langabeer had the same stat. 3 points +3 with 4 shots. Deserved the 2nd Ste but maybe the 1st star too.

3. Vasily Horvat- the other linemate for the both of them. He had 3 points and a +3 as well but he scored 2 goals and a fight. Good way to step up for your team. He was close for a Gordie Howe Hat trick.

<div align="center">Three Stars of the Game</div>

1 Knights John Langabeer 1 Goal || 2 Assists || 4 Shots || 3 Hits

The Knights were looking to Langabeer to be a key player going into this season and tonight he answered the call. He set the tone early with the first goal of the game, and was a physical force throughout.

2 Knights Cory Knouse 1 Goal || 2 Assists || 4 Shots

Knouse showed great chemistry with his line mates. He picked up a primary assist on each of Horvat's goals.

3 Knights Vasily Horvat 2 Goals || 1 Assist || 4 Shots || 1 Hit

Horvat made the most out of Langabeer's physical play by finding open ice where he was able to find the back of the net twice. He pitched in physically as well.

<div align="center">Unsung Hero</div>

This is an easy one as the unsung hero of the game for me was Kelowna goalie Sebastian Thompson. When your team puts up 6 goals in front of you, especially on the first game of the season, it's easy to get carried away with all of the attention and praise that the skaters receive and forget about the guy who pitched a shutout in his first game of the year. The Knights didn't block very many shots in front of Seb but in the first game of the year goalies usually like seeing a lot of rubber to "get into the groove" of things and Thompson flashed the glove early and often as STL had many high-quality chances relative to their shot total. The forwards rightly got a lot of praise here as almost any goalie can win when the team in front of them puts up 6 goals but pitching a shutout was the cherry on top of the sundae for a great start for Kelowna.

BK's Spotlight Player: Vasily Horvat

2 Goals
1 Assist
1 Fight (Completing the Gordie Howe Hat Trick)
4 Shots
20:26 Ice Time

You don't normally see a forward going over twenty minutes out on the ice, but Vasily Horvat did that, and deserved every second he was out there for. Helping out with an assist to the opening goal and basically taking over the second period on his own, Horvat made sure his presence was felt on the offensive end in the first two periods, while laying himself back on the defensive end for the third period. His near-perfect game ended up with him on the bad end of some nasty punches from rookie Brett Kennedy, but it still gave him the Gordie Howe Hat Trick. Three points in the bag for Horvat, and there's still a whole season left to go to raise the bar for himself.

Karri's Keep Corner

Game 04 - STL vs KEL

Haapanen/Wagner vs. Thompson

Keeper of the game:

Thompson wins this one, hands-down. Unbeaten in net, a solid 18 saves. Sure, some of them were key saves, that kept his team in it - but frankly, his team didn't really need it. Most of those 18 shots were fairly weak - but Thompson stopped each one. Wagner's performance - saving only 73% - was pretty weak. Great goals, only one or two could really be credited as Wagner baffling the play, but allowing 6 goals? Can't be done in this league.

Statistically speaking; Diving into the faceoff circle

In the first matchup between the St Louis Scarecrows and the Kelowna Knights in Week 1, the Knights were able to make a resounding statement despite losing the battle between the dots. Of the 75 faceoffs taken Colorado won 38 and Kelowna won 37 - 48.6% success for the goal-scoring Knights. When you look at the average faceoff results for each team, the difference is far more marked: only 22% average faceoff success for the Knights compared to 36% average for the Scarecrows.

However, peeling away the layers reveals that 8 of the 14 players who took faceoffs in the game weren't regular centremen and only took less than 5. If we eliminate those outliers, the true faceoff competition resembles a much closer struggle.

John Langabeer, the number one centreman for the Knights and who ended the game with 3 points, won 22 of his 36 faceoffs for a strong 61%. The Scarecrows used two centremen almost equally in this game: Fletcher Carric who won 68% of his 28 faceoffs, and Victor Vorkämpfer who only won 48% of his 27 attempts.

The rookie showdown between Brett Kennedy for St Louis and Janis Døro for Kelowna was won by Døro; he managed 53% on 15 draws on the Knight's second line, compared to 40% on 10 attempts for Kennedy on the Scarecrow's third line.

Unsung Hero

My unsung hero for this game is Kelowna forward Janis Døro. Døro got 1 assist this game, and was a +1. He had 3 shots on goal, and went 8/15 in the faceoff circle. While he didn't have a hit, or block any shots, he played just under 19 minutes, prove to his GM's that he could immediately take on a heavy workload.

Biggest Impact

It was not a good night for the Scarecrows. A big reason for that was because of Knights winger Vasily Horvat. Horvat made a great play to Langabeer to give the Knights an early lead in the first. He didn't stop there. Horvat put the game away scoring his first two goals of the season in the second period. As the game got a little heated in the 3rd, Horvat stood up for his team and dropped the gloves against Brett Kennedy. He finished the night with 3 points, +3 and 20:26 of ice time. Great game from Horvat.

Player of the game

John Langabeer

The stud forward took advantage of a defensive breakdown eleven and a half minutes into the game to give the Knights the lead. This being the first game for both teams, Langabeer set a rhythm for his team which led to another goal a minutes later by his teammate. He logged in 22 and a half solid minutes, including penalty kills with some key defensive plays. His statline included the game winner, 2 assists, +3, 3 hits, 4 shots, going 22/36 on faceoffs, being the best center and one of the most versatile player on the ice tonight.

Unsung star

Sebastian Thompson

Could have easily been the first star of the game after getting a shutout in the opening game of the season with a perfect 18 save game tonight. Thompson drained the Scarecrows offense for 60 minutes resulting in his team controlling the pace of the game. It would have been wrong to not give this goalie some recognition after not even being a 3rd star in this game. After his squad's championship run last season, he didn't skip a beat this game, kept his team ahead and looked like he inspired his teammates big time to do the same.

Doubt is a dream killer
