The playoffs are a super exciting time of the season. You know what makes them more exciting? Giving out a ton of TPE!

Here's how this will work: there are five tasks, each of which is worth up to 2 TPE for putting in a little effort, for a total of 10 possible TPE. You can complete them in any order and do as few or as many as you would like.

To complete all 5 tasks, you'll have to do a mixture of written and graphics work. Don't worry, we won't grade too harshly as long as you put in some effort.

Task #1 - Create a fan giveaway item to be handed out at one of your team's playoff games (can be a rally towel, foam finger, bobble head, etc.)
Requirements: WRITTEN: Write a 100 word blurb about the item, including details on the game where the item will be given out. or GRAPHIC: Include a picture of the item and at least one SMJHL logo; must look like you at least kinda tried.

Task #2 - Write a brief player highlight featuring a breakout player from one of the first round games. What kind of impact did that player have on the outcome of the series?
Requirements: At least 200 words. Must include at least two stats.

Task #3 - Write a post-game analysis for one of the games that has already been played OR make a post-game infographic for one of the games that has already been played.
Requirements: At least 250 words for written / at least 4 stats featured in at least 2 different ways for graphics (bar graphs, pie graphs, list of names, etc)

Task #4 - Come up with a playoff slogan for your team and a hashtag for three players on the team.

Task #5 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Top 5 goals, top 5 players, top 5 noteworthy people in the audience for one of the games, whatever you want. No word count, but if you just list 5 names, you won't get the full 2 tpe. Be a little creative.

DEADLINE FOR ALL TASKS: 5 full days after the final PBP is complete, June 1, 11:59PM EST.

As always, SMJHL rookies only. Claims will go in the claim thread.

This year the Vancouver Whalers will be handing out something special to all fans who join us in the arena for a viewing of other playoff games. To show support and appreciation to the fans for their dedication we’ll be handing out the most high quality playoff rags in the world. The rags are made from the finest of silk from the steppes of western China, and woven by hand using techniques that date back to the days of the Roman Empire. The fine silk is processed and finally we print onto the rag, “We Tried”. The slogan encompanses the effort and quality of the Vancouver Whalers team throughout the season. Make sure to pick up yours for $50 on the first day of the SMJHL finals where Detroit and St. Louis will face off!

2.

Mike Izzy had a decent SMJHL season, putting up 10 goals and 9 assists for a total of 19 points in the 50 games played. This put him at a .38 point per game rating with a good corsi of +19 over the season. While these stats are nice, especially the corsi of +19, it still wasn’t an exceptional season by the rookie forward. That being said as the playoffs started Izzy stepped up into a pseudo leadership role that Kelowna believed he could perform in all along. This is especially demonstrated in the Game 3 loss to Detroit in the 1st round of the playoffs. Now, just because this game resulted in a loss we shouldn’t ignore Izzy’s individual efforts. Izzy stepped onto the ice and up a goal and 2 assists in 20 minutes of ice time. That’s a very impressive game for Izzy, and it put him in a position to get the 1st star of the game. Not only that, but Izzy threw 5 hits to ensure his team was playing hard and physical and still dominate the +/- category by being a +3 in a Kelowna loss. Overall Izzy really broke out this game, and we’ll probably see more of this Mike Izzy next season.

3.

It’s only fitting I do the final game of the playoffs here, since I had the pleasure of doing the PBP for the last battle between the Detroit Falcons and the St. Louis Scarecrows.

The game started off really well for the Falcons, who going into the series were up 3 - 2, as right off the bat Wright was able to slip one past the Crows defence and their goalie Jimmy Wagner. This would eventually be an indication of what was to come for the rest of the game for both teams. The Falcons did a fantastic job of playing solid offense and absolutely dominating the possession game, all while playing a disciplined game as well. That being said, we shouldn’t rule out some of the Crows defensive efforts as well. While the defence wasn’t great, and Wagner wasn’t playing that well, their PK was absolutely killer. The Crows took a total of 8 penalties, which totals to 20 minutes of being a man down (give or take) and they killed 100% of those power plays. If the Crows had kept this defensive effort up and played a better offensive game, we might have seen a far closer game. Detroit as well, had a good defensive game as they limited the Crows to 9 shots on goal. Not for a period though, the whole game. Detroit had arguably one of the most dominant playoff games in SMJHL history absolutely limiting the Crows chances on offense. Another interesting stat to look at in this dominate Detroit victory is faceoffs, but surprisingly we see that faceoffs we’re relatively even for both sides as Detroit had 37 wins total and St. Louis had 40 wins total. Overall the game was really interesting too look at, especially stats wise because some were so close (faceoff wins) and some were so vastly different (shot differential being 33 - 9), but in the end it was a dominate 4 - 1 performance with Arrivabene, Rossi, Gauthier putting up 2 points to help their team win an easy game.

5.

Top 5 dirty players in the SMJHL (As of when the index was last updated, which because Allen is ded does not pertain to the finals):

1. Dani Forsberg (PGF) - As of the last update, Forsberg led the league in penalty minutes during the playoffs. Despite being in the box for 18 minutes, Forsberg still played a crucial role for the firebirds putting up 8 points in 10 games.

2. Tae McDonald (MTL) - In 4 games McDonald put up an impressive 15 penalty minutes. That’s a pretty large amount of minutes in the box considering the amount of games she played. Tae also only put up a single point in all four games, which furthers the effect of her time in the box. If Montreal had lasted longer it’d be very interesting to see where McDonald falls on the board here.

3. Jake Brosnan (COL) - Brosnan, one of the Mammoths rookies, is #2 in penalty minutes in the index at the moment. He currently leads all the other rookies, the next one coming in at 3 minutes behind him. To be honest, Brosnan didn’t have a great playoffs only throwing 17 hits and 5 shots, while only netting 4 points and a -1 corsi. That being said 5 of his minutes came from a fight that he won, so that shouldn’t be overlooked.

4. Roddy Hawkins (DET) - At the time Hawkins was having a pretty unimpressive playoffs. He only put up 5 points with a -1 corsi in 10 games, all while playing around 24 minutes a game for his team. And worst of all, he had a whoppin 12 minutes of penalty minutes. With that ice time Hawkins was expected to put up more points and stop playing an undisciplined game.

5. Otto Lahti (DET) - Lahti, another Detroit player, was another person similar to Hawkins had a pretty unimpressive run in the playoffs. He had 12 minutes of penalty minutes like Hawkins did above, but his stat line was rather dull. He played decent, but nothing amazing. Maybe if he wasn’t chillin in the box with his boy Hawkins he would have put up more points. Wink

(Don’t take this list personally, it was a jape)

Task 1
Before first game of finals Detroit Falcons decided to give out signed game shirts. First 100 guests who will arrive to first home game of Falcons will get those shirts. They are player signed. If You post picture of that shirt on twitter or instagram using hashtag #Whooosh you will enter anotherr compettition where ten lucky persons will win a ticket to next season opener. As well as everyyone who arrives at the game will get special play off towel. Those will be put on your seats and people are more than welcome to cheer for Detroit Falcons using them.
Task 2
It is easy to talk about team leaders, who play in first line and is that one who you look up to as you came in to team as a rookie. Orto look at goalkeeper who was phenomenal throughout play offs. As a lazy person I will do the same and I will talk about Falcons goalkeeper Stephan Harris and Noro Wozy. Detroit acquired Harris after Barsou ended his career and Falcons got him for bassically beg of pucks. Harris has played 10 games this far in play offs and has 90.6 save percent. Harris as well has 2.33 GAA in 10 games. Not so bad for such a bargain like Harris was for Falcons.
Noro Wozy is top player for Falcons, he has most points as well as most goals. 5+5. Playing as a first line winger and scoring or assisting in so important games like every play off game is he deserves to win play off mvp awards. But this is not about that. Playing just under 21 minutes a game he was one of reasons for Falcons succes. Falcons cup win isn't just about one or two players, it is a team succes everyone did their job and that's why it is so hard to point out just two or three players.

Task #5
Phelps’ completely biased Top 5 teams that didn’t make it to the finals.
1. Vancouver Whalers – Completely biased homer pick, we da best and we didn’t even make the playoffs. lol
2. Montreal Militia – The Militia have built a pretty solid team and they were extremely active in getting free agents. Montreal is a team to watch out for even if they didn’t make the finals.
3. Prince George Firebirds – The Firebirds entered the playoffs as underdogs, but having acquired some help at the trade deadline they made a strong push to get to the 2nd round.
4. Colorado Mammoths – I had the Mammoths higher on this list, but after looking at their goaltending situation with what looks like 2 semi-active goalies, I dropped them down a bit.
5. Kelowna Knights – Since these are my completely biased picks, I have to put the Knights at the bottom, thankfully it’s a top 5 and I couldn’t possibly justify Halifax being in here.

Task #4
“It’s all about the Phelps – Odjick – Spitfire line or the POS Line.” These guys are affectionately called the Pieces Of Sh*t by their fans, it sounds mean, but I swear it’s endearing. #POSline

Task #3
SMJHL Playoffs, Montreal Militia vs Detroit Falcons Game 6. Prior to this game the Detroit Falcons were leading 3-2 in the series, they came in determined to finish off the Militia, but the Militia came out firing too. After the first period the Falcons were in the lead, but the shot board showed a bit of a different story; 13 shots for the Militia to 8 shots for the Falcons. Then again in the 2nd period the Militia came on strong. They put up 17 shots to the Falcons 8, coming on extremely strong and taking a 3-1 lead in the game. After watching that 2nd period you would expect that Detroit was done for, they were outplayed and outshot in the first two periods. I’m not sure what was said between the 2nd and 3rd periods to the players, but the Detroit defense turned into 6 Nicolas Lidstroms and they cut off Montreal’s attacks completely. In fact, most of the 3rd period was spent in the Montreal zone and the Falcons managed their comeback and the period ended tied. In overtime the momentum continued for Detroit while Montreal could not get their hands on the puck. Detroit managed 7 shots in an overtime period where the Militia fell apart and were unable to scrape together even a single shot on the Falcons net. Montreal’s Yuri Bakos-Markov took a tripping penalty 4 minutes into the OT period and the Falcons were ready to capitalize on the man advantage. Their star players Yuriy Starkonov, Noro Wozy, and Jakub Trocheck combine for the goal that would finish the game and send them to the Four Star Cup finals.

Task #2
Noro Wozy is the breakout player that the Detroit Falcons needed in the 1st round of the S34 playoffs. Detroit started the playoffs flat, they clearly weren’t ready for the pace of the game and they couldn’t get their game together for the first 2 games. In game 3 the Falcons turned it on, they had scoring from multiple lines, Wozy was there to put up 2 assists and the game winning goal. Then again in game 4 of the series, there was Wozy scoring the game winning goal. In game 5, Wozy assisted on the game winning goal and had a really solid game taking 4 shots and being a +1 by the end. And to complete the 4 game winning streak that got Detroit through the 1st round and onto the 2nd, there was Wozy yet again, scoring the game winner. One player managed to score the game winning goal in 3 out of 4 games, and assisted on the 4th one. It is without a doubt that a Detroit team without Wozy would not have fared so well in the 1st round and potentially could have been knocked out of the playoffs if it weren’t for him. Wozy had 3 goals and 4 assists after taking 21 shots in the 1st round series, which on its own is not horribly impressive, but when those goals all caused the Falcons to win games, it’s deserving of the title “Breakout Player of the First Round”.

Task #2 - Write a brief player highlight featuring a breakout player from one of the first round games. What kind of impact did that player have on the outcome of the series?
Requirements: At least 200 words. Must include at least two stats.

My breakout performer goes to Detroit net-minder Stephan Harris a player who started on the Prince Goerge Firebirds and became part of an after thought deal back on April 30th acquired by the Falcons for a 7th round pick. Since SMJHL drafts usually last 3 rounds at most a 7th rounder is essentially a free trade acquisition courtesy of Prince George. Out of neccesity Harris became Detroits starting goalie and enjoyed a strong final 15 games to help his franchise advance into the post season. Harris opening round match up was against Kelowna and a abrasive offensive top line... and while that first unit played well Harris gave his Falcons a chance to win every game all 6 games that series and in those final 4 games he went from respectable to one of the keys to victory as Detroit won all 4 to move to the semi finals. Against the militia Harris's game play went up a level stifling the 2nd best team in S34 on their way to another 6 game series victory. Harris rewarded the Falcons with a remarkable playoff performance as he moves into the 4 cup final with a 7-3 record while boasting a save percentage of .906. both tops in the playoffs.

Kelowna 3, Detroit 2: Game 1 of the opening series
The Kelowna Knights stunned a sold out crowd at the Jet Blue Airways Arena as they came into Detroit and took the series opener 3-2. Kelowna carried over that formula which has worked for them since making a series of line changes back at 85 here into game 1.. That top line of John Langabeer, Leafer Rielly and Mike Izzy imposed their will on this match up scoring 2 goals, 2 assists and 15 shots on goal while the Knights received some stellar play in net by SMJHL all-star Sabastian Thompson.

Detroit does have some positives to take out of game 1. Stephan Harris played well in defeat stopping 23 of 26 shots on net while secondary scorers like rookie Chris Smulander and defenseman Jocob Trocheck each chimed in with a goal. But there wasnt enough push back by the falcons key offensive players to get it done. Falcons top unit of Harper Wright, Noro Wozy and Yuriy Starkonov couldn't find the back of the net. Something that will have to change moving forward for Detroit to win.

The 3rd wheel of that Kelowna top line is rookie Mike Izzy who carried over his hot 2nd half play with a memorable 1st playoff game by scoring the winning goal, handing out 3 hits and ending as game ones 1st star player. Izzy scored 6 goals and 9 assists over the final 16 games of the season to solidify him as part of Kelownas future, and if he can emerge as a viable 3rd threat on that Knights top unit, this could be a difficult series for Detroit.

So that does it here at the Jet Blue Airways Arena where Kelowna captures the series opener and takes back home field advantage with a 3-2 win over Detroit.

Task #4 - Come up with a playoff slogan for your team and a hashtag for three players on the team.

Playoff Slogan below:

Mike Izzy = #IzzyApproved
John Langabeer = #ItsBeerTime
Fedor Shirobokov = #gettingFedorEveryday

Task #5 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Top 5 goals, top 5 players, top 5 noteworthy people in the audience for one of the games, whatever you want. No word count, but if you just list 5 names, you won't get the full 2 tpe. Be a little creative.

The top 5 reasons why this Detroit/St. Louis championship series is worth watching

1. Star Power - This 4 cup finale is saturated with SHJHL star power. Players that are worth the price of addmission. From Noro Wozy, Yuriy Starkonov, Harper Wright, Roddy Hawkins and Jacob Trocket on Detroit to the bravado that a Crossfit Jesus, Viktor Vorkämpfer, Matthew Auston, Louis Garrett and Jimmy Wagner bring to the show. This is must see TV!

2. The underdogs - Our championship series is not without an underdog to root for.. as we talking about Detroit goalie Stephan Harris... a mid season pick up given to detroit for free.. Harris has surprised the SHL universe with a captivating playoff run!

3. Rookies Draft status - Alot is on the line for a group of draft prospects looking to impress an SHL team on the leagues biggest stage! From top 5 consecius Louie Garrett looking to prove hes worth the heavy price tag to players like Kett Chupp, Chuck Goody Jr, Maurizio Arrivabene , Ryan Richter and Chris Smulander looking to increase awarness of their draft status.. these are critical moments for these young players ...a reason to keep an close eye on.

4. Verbal conflicts - This is not the calmest 2 teams to ever venture on a championship stage. as we recall St. Louis goalie Jimmy Wagner torched the firebirds after there series via the media. This could be a series that gets played both through the SIM and through the 24 hour news cycle. stay tuned.

5. Both teams are deserving - Maybe the most important reason to watch this series is that both teams are deserving of being in this season 4 cup champion. These 2 teams have combined for 61 wins this season. Making this a series very much up in the air which is always a viewers delight!

Task 1

Alright, so this fan collectable was given away at Game 1 in the series between the St. Louis Scarecrows and Prince George Firebirds. It’s a bobblehead featuring Scarecrows goalie, Jimmy Wagner. But as many of you probably already know, Wagner has a nickname and it’s a nickname that he is very proud of at that… The Wall. So what makes this bobblehead interesting is that it has the body of a goalie, but the hands and bobblehead have been replaced with little slabs of wall. Nothing is getting past this bobblehead just like nothing gets past Jimmy Wagner (except for the two goals that he let in that game).

Task 2

So, the breakout player that I am writing about is a rookie who I don’t think gets nearly enough attention. It’s Kelowna Knights forward, Mike Izzy. Izzy on finished with 19 points in 50 games for the Knights in the regular season, but we learned this year that playoff Mike Izzy is a completely different beast. In Game 1 between the Kelowna Knights and Detroit Falcons, Mike Izzy played a great game and really made a statement that he was going to be a force to be reckoned with in the post-season. He laid out three massive hits in this game and ended up scoring what would be the game winner in the second period. The Knights would end up losing to the eventual Four Star Cup finalists in six games, but as aforementioned, Izzy’s presence was felt in all six games. He ended up finishing the series with two goals and four assists and I personally believe that that caught the eye of a lot of scouts in the SHL. Through this playoff performance, Mike Izzy has all but cemented himself as a future leader for the Kelowna Knights and I look forward to seeing what he can bring next season. #IzzyApproved

Task 3
Alright, it’s time for a recap of Game 7 of the semi-final matchup between the Prince George Firebirds and the St. Louis Scarecrows. The Firebirds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the series, but the Scarecrows roared back with 3 straight wins. Prince George would manage to win an elimination Game 6 to force this final game. The Scarecrows would have an unfortunate break just seconds into the game when Matthew Auston would go to the box for roughing with 7 ticks of the clock gone. The Scarecrows would kill the penalty but that wouldn’t stop the Firebirds from getting on the board first with a goal from Jay Beagle Jr. The Scarecrows wouldn’t be deterred from being down early, however. Just over a minute later, Charles Walker would tie up the game with his 4th goal of the playoffs and Dubois would put them up just seconds after Walker’s goal. The 2nd period is when things really blew up though. Crossfit Jesus would open up the scoring with less than a minute off of the clock to put the Scarecrows up 3-1. The Firebirds wouldn’t go down fighting though. Around halfway through the period, Chris York would score his 4th of the playoff and bring Prince George back within 1. Unhappy with that, the St. Louis 2nd line would go to work. First, we got a goal from the rookie, Louie Garrett, to put the Scarecrows back up by 2. Viktor Vorkämpfer would then score within seconds after that to put St. Louis up by the score of 5-2. In the 3rd period, the lone goal would be scored by Nick Celej of the Firebirds, but that wouldn’t be enough for the comeback and the Scarecrows would advance to the Four Star Cup Finals to take on the Detroit Falcons.

Let’s take a look at some of the stats that contributed to a Scarecrows win in this Game 7. The most glaring stat from this game was that Prince George got called on 9 penalties. Yes, you heard that correctly, 9 penalties. The only good thing for the Firebirds regarding that was that they killed off all 9 against a very talented Scarecrows power play unit. Secondly, the Scarecrows outshot the Firebirds 43-17. This score of this game was actually much closer than how it felt. The Scarecrows just dominated possession of this game, Prince George just managed to capitalize on its few opportunities. Thirdly, despite have possession for most of the game, St. Louis was still the more physical team. The Scarecrows out hit the Firebirds 15-12. Lastly, a huge contributed factor to St. Louis’ possession in the game was their faceoffs. They won 52 faceoffs to Prince George’s 34.

Task 4
This year's slogan for the Scarecrows championship run is "Protect the Field" referencing our (usually) dominant home ice performances. Three hashtags for players on our team include: Louie Garrett #LouieLouie Jimmy Wagner #TheWall and Crossfit Jesus #CaptainCrossfit

Task 5
Alright, let’s take a look at some celebrities who have already purchased their tickets to the finals between the St. Louis Scarecrows and Detroit Falcons. These aren’t listed in an order of how famous or popular they necessarily are. Just alternating between STL and DET fans.

5. Jenna Fischer – That’s right. The star from The Office grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and has been a long-time season ticket holder for the Scarecrows. She finds it difficult to be at games with her very busy acting career, but she wouldn’t miss the finals for anything.

4. Insane Clown Posse – Eminem said that he was too good to support the Detroit Falcons. He’s probably right. The Falcons had to reach out to the clearly inferior ICP to come to their games.

3. Jon Hamm – Similarly to Jenna Fischer, the star of Mad Men grew up in St. Louis and has been a big supporter of the Scarecrows over the years. We caught up with Hamm to get a quote about the series. “After the Crows disappointed season last year, it’s awesome to see them in the finals. I will absolutely be there”.

2. Tim Allen – Allen loves all things Detroit, especially all of that quality cocaine up there. Supporting the Falcons would probably lead me to do drugs too.

1. Randy Orton – Even though the professional wrestler grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, he currently resides in Missouri and has been a massive supporter of the Scarecrows. The 6’5 behemoth can usually be seen sitting on the glass at Scarecrows home games. “I just love the game, I try to catch them live whenever I can. They are absolutely going to win the cup this year”.

Task #1:
Talking about giveaway items for the Vancouver Whalers’ fans, people will think about the tradition for the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL - where they would give out towels and let people wave them, to show support for the team. As many of you know, Vancouver Whalers, on the other hand, is a team composed of junior hockey players, and so therefore we thought of a towel of another kind, that is, the giveaway paper towels. That’s right, you have not heard it wrong, it is the paper towel you use after you’ve finished your business in the toilet. The paper towel is just of regular size, but with our current roster, players’ signature, as well as numerous logos and memorable scenes from the Vancouver Whalers printed on it. Whether to keep it as a souvenir, or actually use it, it’s up to you to decide!

Task #2:
One of the breakout players in this season’s playoffs, has to be Roddy Hawkins from the Detroit Falcons. Hawkins, despite being a send downs as well as one of the older players on the team, he is definitely stepping up his game, both offensively and defensively. First, let us look at his stats from the regular season. Hawkins, despite being a defenseman, has put up a monstrous 42 points performance. Of those 42 points, it consists of 9 goals and 33 assists. On the defensive side, Hawkins has put up a plus/minus of +6. For hits, he has put up 132. He has certainly improved a lot. He is also the top 5 player on the Detroit Falcons.

With those statistics coming into the playoffs, one can expect Hawkin to have an impact on Falcons’ playoff performance. In the first game facing the Knights, even though the Knights have a one goal advantage in the first bit of the second period, Hawkins is the one who turned it around. After trailing for one goal, Hawkins immediately brings home two goals. What he did shocked the entire arena. As a result, Detroit gained back their momentum and fought back hard to score three more goals, to bring home the first win of the first playoff round, after trailing 2-0 to Kelowna. Hawkins came up big in the third game to avoid the sweep by Kelowna, if Kelowna won game three, with a 3-0 advantage, Detroit’s chance of winning the series becomes infinitely small. Hawkins is the key person in bringing home the victory from first round. In that game, Hawkins scored two points, coming solely from the two goals he scored, as well as a plus/minus of -2.

Task #3:
Hello everyone, welcome, tonight we will talk about game three between Detroit and Kelowna, the important, or I what I would I call the important turning point of the series. Since Kelowna has a 2-0 series advantage before the game, hence Kelowna is really looking to stomp Detroit’s powerplay, which is known to be very strong through the entire SMJHL, to build a 3-0 series lead. One of the ways to achieve this is to score more goals early into the game, to produce pressure for the Falcons. And Kelowna did just that. At 1:26, yes, 1:26 Langabeer from Kelowna immediately nets one for the team, this is an important breakout for the Knights. However, at 16:46, Wright of the Falcons shot one right under the crossbar to even out the game. Even with two PPs, Kelowna couldn’t score again in the first.

In the second period, it is where things get interesting, once again Kelowna scored early, Izzy scored at 0:38. However, things are still balanced between Kelowna and Detroit. But soon the balance will not be there, Kelowna has committed three penalties in a row. Facing one of the strongest PP units in the league, they did not stand a chance. Detroit was able to score three consecutive goals to put the game in their hands. As a result, Kelowna has a disastrous penalty, a 20.00% one, only 1 on 5 attempts. The Knights went on to score two more goals from Andrezjeck and Lebeau, but Detroit’s Wozy scored one more on the powerplay before that, and so Detroit came out on top by one goal. Detroit went to on win three more games in a row, and this game is certainly the key of them achieving such great feat.

Ok ladies and gentlemen, today we are here to take a look at the members of the Vancouver Whalers cheering team. As we all know, Whalers missed the playoffs once again, it's no longer a joke, rather, it's becoming a fact. As such, Vancouver developed a cheering team, consists of current team members, in order to cheer for the rest of the playoffs teams (or we can call it VWCT). So, who's the best cheering leader out of them all?

5. Shoyu Kikkoman - This man is worthy to be on the VWCT because of his name, Shoyu. This guy, I'm telling you, is one hell of a beauty. Who will bring a full jug of soy sauce and 50 plates of sushi to the arena cheering for some hockey teams? He's defying logic and traditions, and is on the top 5 cheering leader list for sure.

4. Sophia Bennett - This lady here is amazing as well. Perhaps other girls who go to a hockey match will cheer out loud, chanting team slogan etc. But Sophia's way of cheering is the other way around. She will carefully analyze gameplays, jot notes, and watch games tightly to figure out the final winner of the game. A must have on VWCT, the eye of illuminati.

3. Spitfire - This guy goes to the match wearing a pony t-shirt with the "spitfire" written below the pony. Nothing more needs to be said.

2. Angelo Odjick - as you might have known, Odjick likes to fight. If the team VWCT cheering is losing, he will straight up go down to the ice and drop them gloves. So VWCT really works out in the end, as it directly makes teams to win the match. Wink

1. Robert Phelps - the key of success of VWCT. A.K.A the soul leader of the entire group, the team unite because of this young gentleman. He's like Bruce WIllis in Armageddon.

Task#2

The Breakout player in the first round of the playoff series between Colorado Mammoths and Prince George Firebirds was Zanarkand Abes the diminutive five foot nine inch Japanese sniper that Prince George picked up on April 30th in a trade with the Halifax Raiders.
Abes a S33 selection of Texas in the SHL was immediately placed on the left wing of line one with Center Fredrick Boone and the two gelled immediately and created a serious match up problem for the Mammoths as the series wore on.
Abes energy and puck handling was difficult to contain for the Colorado defense and he scored three goals and added three assists in the opening round and was the first star of the game in both game five and the decisive Firebirds victory in game six with a goal and an assist in each those assists being on the game winning goals. That's why I'm calling Zanarkand Abes the 'Breakout Player' of this opening round series.

TASK 1:
For the Vancouver Whalers' first game of the play-offs, of which I'm sure we will have many some day believe me. Every fan in attendance will recieve a certified Vancouver Whalers Whale Tail Foam Flapper©. Each time your Whalers score you can flap your Whale Tail Foam Flapper© with pride!
Just remember to flap with care, be considerate of others around you. The Vancouver Whalers Hockey Association does not take any responsibility for injures which may occur while using your Whale Tail Foam Flapper©, including but not limited to: Foam rash, Flapper being used as a projectile in any way, small children consuming foam flapper. Any and all parties using the terms "Whale", "Tail", "Foam", or "Flapper" will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

TASK 2:
#8 Thomas Toothsome the rookie offensive defense man from Germany on the Prince George Firebirds is one to look out for in these play-offs. After completing a very solid season with 8 goals and 18 assists, Thomas and the Firebirds kicked off their series against the Colorado Mammoths with a 3-2 defeat. It was late in the first period of this game however that Thomas picked up an assist off of a relentless push on net leading inevitably to a beautiful goal by Dani Forsberg. Fast forward to game 4, another loss for Prince George but an incredible Penalty killing display of 6 for 6. To cap this off he made a brilliant goal via Caelan Fearghal across the net. That leaves us with the famous pivotal game 5 win. With pressure in this series mounting, Prince George sustained 5 penalties. The Mammoths however just couldn’t seem to make anything happen as the Firebird’s penalty kill machine was put into high gear yet again.
With game 5 in the bag and momentum on their side Prince George defeated Colorado 3-2 in overtime of game 6. Mr. Toothsome has picked up one more goal in round 2 against the St Louis Scarecrows, plus many more world class defensive plays. Thomas is a great well-rounded player who is not afraid to sacrifice his body to a few shots to get the job done, for this reason he is a break out defender and we hope to see much more of him in these playoffs and beyond.

TASK 3:
Round 2 of the play-offs saw the 2nd seed Montreal Militia take on the Detroit Falcons coming off of their game 6 victory over the Kelowna Knights. Through out the regular season Montreal have played a dominating role beating Detroit 6 of the 8 times these two teams have faced each other. Now, in the intensity which is play-off hockey, Detroit will get a crack at exacting revenge.
Game one.. After 10 minutes of feeling each other out, Detroit drew first blood thanks to a ringing slap shot from Detroit’s blue liner Otto Lahti. After twenty minutes we saw Montreal fight back with a quick goal off of a rebound by Luisa Koller, followed a minute later by another Detroit goal produced by the always dangerous Noro Wozy. Second period started with a Montreal face off win and an onslaught of shots blocked by Stephen Harris, the break out star of Detroit’s play-off run. Frustration started showing at eleven minutes in accumulating in a fight between the Militia’s Ted McDonald and the Falcon’s Yurily Starkonov. Tempers boiled over resulting in a game misconduct and ejection of Ted McDonald. In the third period Montreal turned the heat up resulting in a goal at Elias Lindstrom. With less than twenty seconds left in regulation time Detroit won a face off in the Montreal zone and the puck got scooped up by Roddy Hawkins but goes wide. Matthew Rossi is there to pick it up and wheel around the net. And with 15 seconds left in the third makes Detroit’s 3rd and game winning goal. This was an extremely intense game to watch and reflects how the rest of the series went.

TASK 5:
For my top five list I decided to do top 5 fan bases

5. Halifax
If there's one thing Halifax is good for it's having an arena packed with half lit east coasters chanting undefined slogans and chirps. It would be an immense shame to not include any east coast teams onto this list.

4. Kelowna
Regardless of their first round elimination this year, Kelowna plays a tight ship and has always had a great arena atmosphere for families. If you're looking to have a greater rate than 5 beers per period (5bpp) you'll want to look elsewhere.

3. Detroit
Everybody remembers the nostalgia with this older arena and it is evident though out the wide-age range of the crowd. This doesn't stop everyone having a good old time getting pissed together, young and old, male and female, gay and straight, this is a model partying fan base and with Detroit doing so well in the play-offs this year it only gives these wild fans even more to drink about.

2. Colorado
The Mammoths have an incredible fan base. Definitely more toned down than Halifax and Detroit however their arena is situated right in the heart of a partying district which means top notch entertainment all night.

1. Vancouver
Completely unbiased home town pick. Vancouver has the perfect mix of everything that makes a fan base good, top notch, just brilliant stuff, that is all.

Task #1:
First 3000 fans threw the doors receive a Vancouver Whalers Koozie (Limited Addition).
(Terrible with this stuff so be easy on me Tongue )

Task #2 -
The breakout player in the first round of playoffs in my opinion is Kelowna Knights forward Mike Izzy. Entering the playoffs his name started to be heard more around the league. He had a pretty good first season with the Knights scoring 10 goals and collecting 9 assists with a total of 19 points in his rookie season. The first game of the series is when I think Izzy caught a lot of attention around the league and I am sure it caught the attention of a lot of SHL GMS and scouts. In Game one Izzy scored his first goal of the series in the second period @ 3:47 adding to Kelowna’s 3-0 lead which eventually ended up being the game winning goal, he had 2 shots and 3 hits and ended up being the first star of the game. Unfortunately for Mike Izzy and the Knights they didn’t end up making it past this round making it to game 6. Izzy finished the series with 2 goals and 4 assists and a total of 6 points making himself very valuable for his team. Lately word around the league has been that Mike Izzy is going to be drafted in the first round.
Word Count -204

Task #3 -
Vancouver Whalers vs Prince George Firebirds
The Whalers started out strong in the first period firing 7 shots on net but didn’t manage to get one past the Firebirds net minder. However, Chris York ended up capitalizing on the power play and putting one past Cechove 3 minutes into the first period. In the second period it was a little closer, Sophia Bennett netting her 6th goal of the season and ended the goose egg for the Whalers 5 minutes into the period tying the game. The period ended tied 1-1 headed into the third period. I wish I was in the dressing room between periods to see what both coaches had to say because they both teams came out guns blazing. The Firebirds drew first blood 20 seconds into the period… not how the Whalers wanted to start the period but that didn’t get them down at all. Phelps took the game into his own hands tying the game once again at 2-2. With the tempers flaring and a win on the line Manziel & Light Jr decided to drop the mitts to spark a reaction out of their teams. Light Jr came out with the win over Manziel sending the Whalers into overtime with that extra jump in their step. It didn’t take long for this one as Spitfire netting his fifth of the season only 1 minute into overtime. The downfall for the Firebirds was giving the Whalers 5 attempts on the power play although they didn’t capitalize on any of them, they gained a lot of momentum to help them capture the win.

Task One: Item Giveaway

At the first game of the round one Colorado/Prince George series, everyone in the stadium was graced with a Colorado Mammoths playoff towel to be whipped around in joy during the games. The towel, a bright white, is donned with the Mammoths logo and a black text along the tops and bottoms reading "Colorado Mammoths, SMJHL Playoffs S34." Ten lucky fans, based entirely on random selections of seats, were given a second playoff towel that differed slightly. The black text read only "Playoffs S34," and surrounding the familiar logo were the signatures of the entire team. Ten fans received these on what would go on to be a 3-2 win for the Mammoths. Unfortunately, I could've sworn I saw one of the towels going for a decent profit on eBay...

Task Two: Player Highlight

<div align="center">[Image: edmonton-oilers-goaltender-cam-talbot-33...630&crop=1]</div>

<div align="center">ARTOM ZHUMBAYEV</div>

"If you want to talk about someone who played his heart out during the first round of the SMJHL playoffs, then let's take a minute to talk about Artom Zhumbayev. This kid--this rookie--had a great regular season, sure, but watching this kid play during the playoffs was an entirely different matter. THe netmidner walked away with a .896% save percentage, sure, but he also walked away with a 2.37 GAA and it could've been a lot worse for him and his team if he didn't play the way he did. In the early games, Zhumbayev faced a lot of high quality shots that, against another goalie, might've gone in, who knows. But Artom's positioning and his almost always accurate vision stopped a lot of great shots from turning into goals. In the later games, he was facing less shots and still letting in 2 or 3 here, which certainly didn't help his overall save percentage, but again, if we're talking about a guy that played with a load of heart and a lot of skill, I think you look at Zhumbayev as that guy. He's that team's playoff MVP in my eyes, no question. I don't know how you don't give it to the kid."

Task Three: Post-Game Analysis

Kelowna @ Detroit, Game Two

There were a lot of high-scoring games in the Kelowna/Detroit series, but no game was more exciting than the 1-0 blanking that Kelowna delivered to Detroit in the second game of their series. While this victory would ultimately be for nought, Kelowna's fighting spirit and the impressive defensive capabilities of both teams during this game made it my personal favourite in the series.

Despite the score, Detroit dominated this game in the stats department, winning almost twice the number of faceoffs, blocking more shots, and taking just one less shot than Kelowna throughout the whole game. The final shot count was 18-17 for Kelowna, and looking at those numbers tells a good portion of the story. Both teams managed to keep dangerous chances to a minimum as they kept their opposition from getting any good shots on net. Unfortunately for Detroit, Kelowna only needed a little bit of space to put one in the back of the net. Werenski's first goal of the playoffs could not have been more opportune, as it put her team ahead by one, giving Kelowna a shot at going up 2-0 in the series. Credit also needs to be given to Kelowna goalie Sebastien Thompson who stopped all 17 shots he faced to blank the Detroit Falcons in game two. Kelowna would go up 2-0 in the series and Detroit would be facing a tough scenario, being down 2-0 going into enemy territory.

Of course, the Falcons would go on to win the Four-Star Cup this season, so perhaps this was the game that lit the fire underneath them...

Task Four: Playoff Slogan/Hashtags

The Mammoths (unofficial) playoff slogan for the S34 SMJHL Playoffs was...

"The Big Freeze Cometh"

Finn Larsson/Finn Krüger: #Finn2Finn
Zinaida Titova: #LongLiveTheQueen
Rambo: #WelcomeToTheJungle

Vancouver had a rough and streaky season, we were almost the bottom seed for the playoffs until our last big losing streak hit. I recall part way of the season, the marketing team was passing around some ideas of things they were going to do for a playoff run, but they might be held off for next season.

Task #1
First thing that I recall was these plastic little harpoons with "Vancouver Whalers" written down the side. They were blue and green, team colours, and the arrow part had a little red on the top of it which I recall was under a bit of debate among management if that would be kid friendly enough. They were actually a lot of fun, they handed them around to us in the locker room and they shot little plastic harpoons with spring action. We had a number of harpoon battles in the locker room, and occasionally would all turn and shoot them at the Captain together to surprise him.

Task #2
So, obviously we didn’t make the playoffs, but due to a recent change in the league rules we did have a series between us and the Halifax Raiders for the first overall draft pick next season. We swept them, but that was no surprise since right before the trade deadline they traded off most of their biggest talent for more picks next season. The Vancouver Whalers fans had a hay-day with the series, but I can tell you from the perspective inside the locker room, we felt pretty bad for the rookies on the Halifax Raiders roster. Easily the biggest impact in that series was our team Captain, Spitfire. He pulled off a hat-trick in the second game, here on home ice, and that really set the tone for the rest of the series. He ended the series with 5 goals and 5 points and really stole the show for the Vancouver crowd. The last game we played in that series, I think the coaching staff told them to focus on him since they were all over him that entire night. Even though we eventually won that game, he ended that game with -1 and no points, which was obviously disappointing for him. Overall, that trick really pumped us up and is in my view the reason we swept the series.

Task #3
We swept the Halifax Raiders, which I think most people thought would be a given. But, in the 4th game of the series, Jordin FourFour Jr. really came alive for them and fought hard to keep them in the series. He ended the night with a save percentage of 0.838 on 37 shots, that’s no weak performance. The Raiders made game 4 memorable, and a much more exciting game than the previous three in the series. Who knows how the series would have ended had they played that way every game, but it was tough after they traded most of their top players right before the trade deadline. On the Whalers side, we certainly gave up a lot more shots than usual for the rest of the series.

After Spitfire’s explosive hat-trick in game 2, it seemed that FourFour Jr. was able to shut him down this game. During this game, the win was on the backs of a number of players. Firstly, Shirou, he was MVP last season, but this season he’d been missing practice and while he played well, just seemed to have cooled off. Not this game, Shirou setup 4, count them, 1, 2, 3, 4 amazing goals this game. We’re hoping to see more of that from him next season. Second, was rookie defender Hoid Wit, who signed with us after the draft as a free agent. I heard not a lot of teams had even considered contracting him, but Kaiser took a chance and it really paid off. He got a goal and two assists over this game, and really shut down the Raiders on defense, stellar performance. Third, not last since she got the first star, was Sophia Bennett. 3 goals and 1 assist, the last of the goals the game winning goal in overtime. Bennett has been a star power player all season long, and clinching this series with that amazing shot in overtime was just the icing on the cake.

Task #4
Because our series was for first overall draft pick, the unofficial slogan in the locker room was: Harpoon a pick! But our slogan we would have used for an actual playoff run was “I bleed green.” I saw a few hashtag suggestions, my favorites were #OnFireSpitfire, #Magar4President, and my personal favorite #AngeloOfDeath.

Task #5
We've had a fun year here in Vancouver, and have developed a regular fan base who we love and love us. Some of our season ticket holders might surprise you. Here are the top 5 season ticket holders who come to all of our games and we see in the stands:
  • 5: Pamela Anderson - Most well known for her role on the TV series Baywatch and her sex tape with Tommy Lee. She's often seen wearing a Phelps jersey.
  • 4: Michael Bublé - Well known jazz singer and all-around nice guy. Often comes by the locker room to congradulate us, he sang for us once, but I think he was mostly singing to Bennett.
  • 3: Tommy Chong - Everyone knows Tommy, actor, comedian, pot-head. Pretty chill dude, he's hung out with a few of the guys, but I don't want to name any names. A couple of them starting showing up late to practice once they started hanging with him.
  • 2: Colin Mochrie - Actor, comedian, improv guy, hilariously funny. He's always in the stands, always comes by to shake our hands after games, even if we lost. His jokes helped us get through some of our losses and get back on track. Great guy and great fan.
  • 1: Ashleigh Ball - You might not know her to see her, but you'd recognise the voice once you speak to her. She's a voice actor, most well known for MLP roles such as Rainbow Dash. She's usually in the stands, wearing her Spitfire jersey. I wonder if she's more a fan of the character or our captain, either way she's a great fan.
