S20 Redraft Based on Player Statlines
#1

Abstract
15 seasons after the S20 SHL Entry Draft. Using the Player Lookup tool on Bojo Machine, I decided to see how the careers of the players from this draft have panned out. Most players ended moving quite a bit in this ranking, with the class Hall of Famer making the biggest splash. Further research can be done to include individual awards, and other metrics.

Introduction
With S35 just around the corner, that means it's been 15 seasons since the S20 SHL Entry Draft. For those who weren't around, it was one of the biggest draft classes of its time, and still ranks among one of the biggest in SHL history. Since then, players have gone on to be members of Head Office, SHL and SMJHL GM's, and even features a Hall of Famer.

How have the players fared since draft day? Using certain stats, I was able to give each player a score, based solely on their stat line. I was going to include awards, but the thought of going through all them was less than appealing.

Methods
To designate the player score, these stats were given the following coefficients:

Skater
Games Played 0.1
Goals 0.55
Assists 0.55
Hits 0.4
Shots Blocked 0.4

Goalies
Games Played 0.1
Wins 0.6
Shutouts 1
Saves 0.1
Points 0.2

When added up, both the player and goalie coefficients add up to 2, which makes it fair in my mind. Also, I placed a higher value on being a good two-way skater, as that signifies a more complete player, to me. I acknowledge the fact that not all players are built to be two-way skaters, so I decided to give the offensive numbers slightly more weight.

In regards to the redraft, I sorted the player scores highest to lowest, and assumed each team would take the best player available. Additionally, the 16 players who didn't end up making it to the SHL have been omitted.

Discussion
After assessing all of the players in this draft class, I noticed only two players who didn't move from their original position in the draft, Mark Longford and Shinji Kudryashov. The biggest riser in this draft was, the only player who has made it to the SHL Hall of Fame, none other than Jakob Tanner (37 spots). The biggest dropper was Le Scucker (36 spots), once a well-known player in the Kelowna Knights locker room.

An interesting find was that Nick Carlzner, who had made it clear he wanted to go to Texas, ended up in the 52nd spot, which was held by Texas. In other words, had Minnesota not drafted him, the debacle which ensued could have been avoided altogether. Also, I found it interesting that Brian O'Rourke and Kari Kekkonen switched spots from 40th and 39th to 39th and 40th, respectively. Ten players were selected +/- 1 spot from which they are currently ranked.

When I was retrieving the information for this article, I encountered an issue trying to recover Elyk's information, which may have improved his rank.

Further research can be done in regards to how players have done, as a whole, by each of their respective teams. Additionally, this study can be worked on, by adding personal awards and Challenge Cups won by each player.

I disagree with any methodology based entirely on individual stats, because it's going to be weighted towards players on shallow teams rather that stronger teams with deeper lines, but overall well thought out article.

First time I've ever seen references on a SHL article

Gotta say that the ranking methodology is biased towards defenseman (Toki at 12th?), but still an interesting take on a redraft. Interesting how I end up at 4th, which is where I would have been drafted if kit didn't exist.

LOL I like how you tried to make a jab at me, but I only had 15 points that season in junior. If you think that's good then.....maybe we need to have a talk about what "good" is Tongue For example, your players, are not.

Points in SMJHL does not a good member make

You had all the makings of a humble, smart, positively contributing member, but you squandered that for some reason

Ya, there were some things I tried to fix. I tried to find a balance between offensive and defensive stats, and this was decent. There are some weird results in it, but I think overall it was pretty fair.

Also LOL at the references Tongue I just wrote a really long research paper on fish behaviour and thought it'd be funny to make an article in that form.
