Calgary Dragons on Draft Night....

It was a big night for the Dragons franchise as they set fire to the entire draft, picking up 3 great players and 2 of the best defenseman in the class!

Coming into S36 the Dragons needed a big draft to re-stock the prospect pool, especially on defense, boasting only last year's first rounder Chuck Goody Jr. The team needed to address a position of need and that's exactly what they did, stealing both Roman Augustus and Casey Creller at picks 10 and 15.

Augustus beyond thrilled he ended up in a Dragons sweater on draft night!

Pick 10: D - Roman Augustus: The Dragons worked hard to move up 2 spots in the 1st round, dealing pick 12 and 38 to Los Angeles in exchange for 10th overall. They hoped to get a shot at the #1 player on their draft board, Roman Augustus. Rumors had it that with such a deep draft the young stud defenseman out of St.Louis could fall to around that area. Dragons management knew they had to do whatever it took to get a shot at him. They also knew if they moved up and he was taken they had a better chance of locking up the #2 player on their board Casey Creller at 10. It was a win win no matter what happened. When it came time to pick, the Dragons snatched up Roman Augustus who could have easily gone in the first few picks of the draft. This is a player who management was very impressed with during scouting and expressed a deep interest in joining the Dragons on draft day. All signs point to this being a huge pick up for Calgary and they are very excited about what Augustus the player and TDZ the member can bring to the organization. TheDangaZone

Creller can't believe he lasted until pick 15 and still went to his #1 spot!

Pick 15: D - Casey Creller. Hands down the steal of the draft. Everyone knows Mook is a legend and his former player Tommy Creller was a 1st overall pick and 3-time cup winner. Being able to get a member like Mook at pick 15 is nothing short of highway robbery. The Dragons previously acquired this pick from Hamilton a few seasons back in the Michael Burch deal, they knew this may end up as a high 2nd, but it ended up being the 1st pick in the 2nd round of the deepest draft since S20. Great value and it showed by selecting Casey Creller, a player who also could have gone anywhere in the 1st round. Special thanks to Mook for not being too active leading up to the draft so he was able to fall a bit. We hoped he be there at 15, but never expected him to fall that far. We would have taken him at 12 if we didn't move up. He was always our guy, former Dragons cup champion, we could not be happier to bring him back to Calgary. The prospect of him playing on a pair with good friend Chuck Goody Jr is something that has Dragons fans buzzing. Mook

Cuddles excited to be part of the Dragons family!

Pick 26: W - Teddy Cuddles: With the draft still going strong in the late 2nd round, we were able to grab Teddy Cuddles out of St.Louis, a player we had ranked in our top 25, so it was a perfect fit. Our scouts in St.Louis had great things to say about this player's work ethic and overall attitude. We value those things highly in Calgary so it was an easy selection. The young power forward winger joined late as an SMJHL free agent signing, but has worked hard and is earning tpe at a nice pace. He brings a unique physical skillset to our prospect pool and is something every team needs. Power forwards are a bit rare in the SHL so we're excited to add that kind of player to the organization. We expect Cuddles to be one of the fastest post-draft risers and easily outplay his draft position. Another great pick for the Dragons. cpetrella

Pick 40: This pick was dealt to Portland during the draft for their S39 2nd rounder. Having already selected 3 players and being tight on cap, we chose to deal it for a future pick in a year where we should have some hometown favorites going back in the draft. While we still liked some players on the board, moving a late 3rd for a 2nd is never a bad move and we were happy to help another team out.

Overall it was a great night for the Dragons organization. Management, players and fans are all very happy with how things turned out. There's no question the Dragons vets are getting a bit long in the tooth, but we still remain a top team. It's important to start building for the future while maintaining the ability to be a cup contender. The Dragons are doing that and with 4 picks in the first 2 rounds of the S37 draft, along with three 3rd's, next season should be another important year for the future of this great organization.

Deepest draft since season 20, hmmmm. Apparently Esa never heard of seasons 25 or 31. Huh

One thing is for sure, he sure does know how to ignite expectations (and his farts).

This is true, I am an expert at lighting farts. Thanks for teaching me how, sorry you lost all your ball hair that one time. Wink

25 and 31 were both great drafts, no question.
