The playoffs are a super exciting time of the season. You know what makes them more exciting? Giving out a ton of TPE!
Here's how this will work: there are five tasks, each of which is worth up to 2 TPE for putting in a little effort, for a total of 10 possible TPE. You can complete them in any order and do as few or as many as you would like. ONLY S39 SMJHL DRAFTEES (S40 SHL DRAFTEES) CAN EARN TPE FOR CW TASKS Task #1 - How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less? Requirements: At least 200 words Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Top 5 goals, top 5 players, top 5 noteworthy people in the audience for one of the games, whatever you want. No word count, but if you just list 5 names, you won't get the full 2 tpe. Be a little creative. Task #3 - Either write an interview with your player about your team's playoff hopes (or if you're on an eliminated team, an interview about your team's season in review) OR create a program cover for one of the games in any playoff series. Requirements: Written option - At least 200 words. Graphic option - Logos of both teams in the matchup and at least one player render. Task #1 - How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less?
Tough to say really, when we look at the Detroit and Prince George series, Detroit managed to win only one game, which is a surprise when taking into consideration the fact that both teams managed to collect 54 points in the regular season. Perhaps for neutral fan, Prince George and Kelowna would have been a better series, Prince George had the most shots on average per game during regular season with 27.54 and Kelowna ranked fourth with 24.94, so both teams had the ability to create chances at least. Detroit in the other hand was third worst in shots on average with 23.36, not a big difference between Kelowna and shots don´t really tell the whole story - true, but against a team like Prince George, need to create changes to score and Kelowna could have been slightly more likely to score than Detroit - making the series last for longer. If Kelowna and Prince George play against each other in this fantasty write up, that of course leaves Detroit and Vancouver. Vancouver was quite mean in the first round, kicked Kelowna out with wins 4-0. Looking back to regular season again, Vancouver had 57 points, so only three more than Detroit, but Vancouver also let in second most goals in the whole league with 150, so if Detroit had bit of a problem creating chances at the same rate as some of the top teams in SMJHL, going against Vancouver and their bit more ´relaxed´ defense could mean Detroit has more space to make plays happen and that way the series has all the potential to even be a game seven series. (200+) Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Top 5 goals, top 5 players, top 5 noteworthy people in the audience for one of the games, whatever you want. No word count, but if you just list 5 names, you won't get the full 2 tpe. Be a little creative. Top- 5 ice girls in the finals. 1. Amy - Vancouver Whalers. The way she moves out there is just beautiful, makes it look so easy and if the one hand grip on the shovel is any indication, she has some fire in her. 2. Hector - Vancouver Whalers Guys can be ice girls as well, personally I did not enjoy the ´accidentally´ bumping into the goal camera footage in game two, showed bit too much - especially when you take into consideration his outfit that night. 3. Melissa - St.Louis Scarecrows I´m a sucker for redheads, I don´t know what it is, but I could watch her all day long. Luckily I can now, since I´m technically doing nothing for next few weeks. 4. Shaniqua - Vancouver Whalers Tried to hit one of the refs in game one, apparently she was not pleased on some of the calls and decided to show how she feels. Clearly a late hit, but kept her hands down and did not jump - overall a solid hit. 5. Rebecca - St.Lous Scarecrows If my information is correct, she has been a Scarecrows ice girl since 1956, that makes her the oldest active ice girl in the whole league! Shows that age is just a number, cleaned the ice nicely and even managed to do it faster than some of the younger girls! Task #3 - Either write an interview with your player about your team's playoff hopes (or if you're on an eliminated team, an interview about your team's season in review) OR create a program cover for one of the games in any playoff series. It´s me, Large-Bob and you are listening to Radio Tampere 104.5! I´m sitting here with Ensio Kalju from Halifax Raiders. He was nice enough to come in today despite being on his holiday at the moment. LB: So Ensio, how has the off-season been? EK: Not bad, been mostly just relaxing and taking it easy. LB: If we look back to regular season and year overall, not the best one for you guys, huh? EK: No - no it was not, but we are a young team and have taken massive steps forward when you for example compare the start of the season to end of the season. When next year starts, we will be ready to roll and take our place in the playoffs. LB: How have you improved or why you feel the team is better now? EK: There is no simple answer to that, but basically everything we do as a team and individually is on higher level, starts off from the mental side - most of the guys are now one year older and know what it takes to play at this level, that mental side alone almost guarantees us a better next year, then all the improvements on individual skill levels and how we use those skills as a team on top of that, so yea - we will have a good year. LB: To end this interview, who was the most annoying team to play against last year? EK: Not going to lie, I hated everybody and every team equally. Without going into details, some of these cities we visited were pretty rough and the so called fans of those teams did not help at all. LB: Thank you Ensio and good luck next season! EK: Thanks! (292) Task #4 - Create a 4 Star Cup Championship banner similar to the one the SHL uses at the top of the site. Sorry, I have 0 talent and creativity on anything graphics related :( ![]() Task #5 - Write a goals highlight play by play for one series winning game OR make an infographic featuring stats from a series winning game. Requirements: At least 200 words for written / at least 4 stats featured in at least 2 different ways for graphics (bar graphs, pie graphs, list of names, etc) Game seven in the round two - Prince George Firebirds vs St. Louis Scarecrows. St.Lous is leading 2-1 when we jump into second period and to around half way point. Seth Paige has the puck in the neutral zone and chooses the safe play and dumps the puck into the Firebirds end before heading off the ice for line change. Paddy Kane-Rielly skates to the corner and picks the puck up. He puts those famous wheels of his moving and tries to find open man, but he takes his time and sends poor pass up the ice, Lavelle from St.Louis reads the play really well and steals the puck, now we have a counter attack opportunity! Lavelle has the puck, passes it to Michael Fischer who dekes and dangles with the puck just enough time so Linqvist manages to get into the open ice, Fischer sends the puck to Lindqvist who does not waste any time in shooting the puck towards Firebirds net: The puck finds its way into the net! Scarecrows are now leading 3-1! The whole situation started from bad play by Kane-Rielly and in return excellent heads up play by Lavelle who read the minor panic in Riellys eyes when there was not any open passing lines for Rielly, Lavelle intercepted the forced pass and started a quick counter attack. Fischer showing solid offensive awarness by waiting second or two instead of forcing the pass and of course Lindqvist who shot right away and forced Tuck to try and make a desperation save. That 3-1 goal was the game winning goal, Firebirds managed to get close and scored 3-2 in the third, but that was not enough - St. Louis heads into the next round with 3-2 win in game seven. Task #1 - How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less?
Requirements: At least 200 words The first round match ups of the SMJHL were absolute blow outs. The two match ups in the first round (since two teams got a bye) had only 9 games between the two series. And these were not best of five, these were best of seven. The Kellowna Knights got swept by the Vancouver Whalers and the Detroit Falcons wound up with only one win against the Prince George Firebirds. Since neither of these match ups were remotely close it’s fun or interesting to think about whether there would be much changes if they were swapped. This analyst doesn’t think so. Neither the Falcons not Knights put up much of a fight in the play offs and if they were to go against the other teams. If Detroit faced Vancouver perhaps Vancouver would have lost a game (or even two) but Vancouver would have still advanced and gone on to face Colorado (who they wound up beating anyways. Vancouver has only lost a game so far in these play offs through the first two rounds so I don’t think they would have lost to Detroit. As far as Kellowna facing off against Prince George that also would not have gone any different. Kellowna could not must up a single win in their series, and maybe they would have won one against PGF but I doubt it. 226 Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Top 5 goals, top 5 players, top 5 noteworthy people in the audience for one of the games, whatever you want. No word count, but if you just list 5 names, you won't get the full 2 tpe. Be a little creative. The top 5 random celebrities in St. Louis for the finals!! Number 5 - Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, Better known as Akon! Who knew that the St. Louis Native loved Junior Hockey. Better get him a Scarecrow Jersey right now na na na. Number 4 - Joe Buck. Though he didn't announce the game, the play by play guy was seen in the crowd watching the game. Number 3 - Cornell Iral Haynes Jr. better known as Nelly! Seated next to Akon, the hip hop artist also for some reason watches the Scarecrows. Number 2 - Jayson Tatum. The Up and coming star for the Boston Celtics is a St. Louis Native and caught some Junior Hockey while he was visiting home. Number 1 - Sterling K Brown. The St. Louis Native and emmy winning actor said "This is Us" about the St. Louis Scarecrows cup victory. Task #3 - Either write an interview with your player about your team's playoff hopes (or if you're on an eliminated team, an interview about your team's season in review) or create a program cover for one of the games in any playoff series. Requirements: Written - At least 200 words. Graphics - Logos of both teams in the matchup and at least one player render. Interviewer: Sitting down with us today is Hallifax Raiders star right winger Iam Essellem for the SMJHL Championship week mandatory interview, how are you today? Essellemm: I’m OK. Just gave an interview, not sure why I’m contractually required to site for this one I: well sorry about that, but lets get right into it. We are here to talk about the season in review for the Hallifax Raiders. How did the season go, from a team stand point E: Obviously we were upset with how we did as a team. I wanted us to make the play offs but we were unable to. The team as a whole was a disappointment but I love this squad. The Raiders are an amazing organization and I’m confident that in S40 we’ll be able to make the playoffs and win I: what do you think was the reason you were unable to succeed? E: We were one of the youngest teams in the SMJHL. I think we played more rookies than any other team. I know that we will succeed next year, we’re gelling and we have the talent I: how about your own success how do you feel about that? E: I feel great. I led all rookies in goals, and I plan on leading the league in scoring next year. 219 Task #4 - Create a 4 Star Cup Championship banner similar to the one the SHL uses at the top of the site. Requirements: Must include a team logo and at least one player render. Requirements: At least 200 words for written / at least 4 stats featured in at least 2 different ways for graphics (bar graphs, pie graphs, list of names, etc) In the final game of the star cup we had a very close game. There were a near even amount of shots (19 to 17) and though the score line of 3 to 1 doesn’t full reflect it, it was a close one until the bitter bitter end. The last goal to secure it officially for the St. Louis Scarecrows was an empty netter by Paddy O Sullivan (off an assist by Jack Daniels) with only 33 seconds left. Before then it was a very tense game. Let’s talk about those other three goals. The first one was a hell of a shot Tony Snow in the first period. This put the eventual champions up one nothing Right away. The goal was only 89 seconds in the game. Then in the second period a goal with 2 and a half minutes left from Ostop Maximoff tied the game up. This left the third period. And in the third period Seth Paige had the puck and got it up to DeMaricus Smith. Smith then, with puck in toe, slid the puck over to Logan Jensen. Jensen then wound up for the shot and slotted right in the five hole past Julian O’Sullivan to win the game and the series. 208 ![]() Registered Posting Freak

Requirements: At least 200 words I feel that Kelowna snuck into the playoffs and really should have missed. None of the bottom three teams in the league would have likely been a challenge for PGF and Vancouver. I feel like the series would have been about the same if the match-ups were PGF/Kelowna and Vancouver/Detroit. Vancouver and PGF were very good teams throughout the entire season and I feel like they would have taken care of business in 4-5 games no matter their opponents. If we somehow saw a PGF/Vancouver series, well that would be way different. I think Prince George matches up pretty well with Vancouver. The scoring of the top line on PGF would have given Vancouver fits, especially when they can struggle to score at times, but I still think that Vancouver would have found a way to squeak into the 2nd round due to their extreme depth. I think Kelowna would have the talent, if they used it correctly, to move on into the 2nd round. They were very deep with some really nice pieces and I think a few roster changes might have done them some great benefit. But the two best teams came out of the first round and would in either situation. (207 Words) Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. While not as visible on ice, Arai spent the entirety of the playoffs not shaving her legs or armpits - and we won't ask about anything else. But we saw a little fuzz popping up on her upper lip as well and we got to give the girl props. She knows how to grow some hair. #4 - Karno Gronkjaer Karno might not be the highest scoring defender on the ice but his beautiful scandinavian beard definitely helps him score off the ice. Tightly groomed and blonde to boot. The SMJHL Gronk might have the sexiest beard in the game. #3 - Gary Grease Grease is over 7 feet tall and but you only need to be 5'7" to be eye level with the bottom of his beard. Grease doesn't only have a long glorious face beaver but it's also a wonderful shade of red. Love. It. #2 - Richard Physt Usually Physt rocks the handlebars but for this playoffs he let that glorious manfur grow all over his chin too. Physt might be the second hairiest player in the league and someone people often ask for a mustache ride. #1 - Kire Yelkrab Dubbed the caveman by the Colorado Mammoths squad. Yelkrab might not only have the best beard this playoffs but he might be the hairiest man to ever grace the league. Yelkrab's beard grew in in under 3 hours after he shaved for the first time in months. Nothing quite like a big filthy ratty beard to scare your opponents. We're here to show you the highlights from tonight's elimination game between the Prince George Firebirds and St Louis Scarecrows. The Firebirds had their back to the wall and the first period in this game was crazy. We started with some great action in the first period. "Michael Fischer takes the puck into the Firebird zone. He's looking for Tellofsen. Tellofsen grabs the puck from the boards. Oh here comes Lindqvist streaking in! Tellofsen hits him mid stride! Shot by Lindqvist! GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!" The Scarecrows decided to try to put some distance in this game seven later in the period. "Paddy O'Sullivan and Fredrich Koenig are playing hot potato with the puck. Oh a pass to Dude! Dude with a shot! SNIPES IT TOP SHELF! THE CROWS TAKE A 2-0 LEAD!" But Prince George wasn't going to go quietly. "Angelo Williams wheeling. He shoots it! Rebound to Lumberding...BETWEEN THE LEGS TO ANDREWS! Shot and GOALLLLLLLLLLL! Prince George is in this thing now!" The second period was tense until 11 minutes had just past and Joakim Lindqvist looked to put the game out of reach. "Lavelle LEVELS the PGF defender! He shovels it to Fischer. Fischer fakes the shot! He passes it to Lindqvist. THE LASER! THE GOALLLLLLLLL! 3-1 St Louis. They're going for the throat now!." The third only ratcheted up the intensity. When PGF tries to claw back into this game. "Where is the play from the big first line of PGF tonight? Oh Petrikov with a beaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuutiful pass to Manning! It's a footrace. Manning has the edge. Fakes the shot...NO HE TOOK THAT! IT'S IN THE NET! 3-2 ST LOUIS with 6 and a half minutes left!" The Firebirds were not able to level the game in the last few minutes but they put up a valiant effort. The St Louis Scarecrows will face the Vancouver Whalers in the finals in three days time. 1: I do not believe that there would have been a tremendous change in the playoff advancement of the SMJHL playoffs in round one, should the matchups have been different between the four franchises. In the first series, we had the Vancouver Whalers facing off against the Kelowna Knights; that series ended up as a clean sweep for the Whalers. The other series featured the Detroit Falcons against the SMJHL champions of last season, the Prince George Firebirds; the reigning champions ended up winning the series in five games. In regards to the former of the two series, the Whalers were the very best SMJHL team in the playoffs without a first round bye. Considering the fact that the Whalers were only ahead of the lowest seed in the playoffs by a total of four points (the Whalers had fifty-seven points in the regular season) and yet they utterly dominated the Knights, I’m not sure if there was a team within that tight group of teams that would’ve put up as strong as a fight. The only team that comes potentially to mind is the Firebirds, and that’s solely due to the fact that they have a championship proven quality side. In general, however, unless the Whalers faced the Firebirds in the first round, I don’t see much change in the teams who would ultimately advance.
Code: 225 words 2: The SMJHL Finals is always littered with an abundance of awesome celebrities in attendance, but this particular finals had some really awesome celebrities that have been sited within their VIP seats. We will now briefly cover the top five celebrities that made an appearance during the SMJHL Finals. First up is UFC President and part owner Dana White, who given his close relationship with Raiders player Conor McGregor, it’s not too surprising to see him in attendance. Next up is none other than Bruce Wayne, surrounded by hordes of attractive women after his money; who knew he was such a fan of SMJHL hockey? Third is NXT Superstar and future world champion, Adam Cole (BAYBAY) alongside the rest of his Undisputed Era, who were rooting for a bunch of physical action given their wrestling background. Fourth was rock band Nickleback, but unfortunately for them, their music absolutely sucks and they were booed out of the building once their faces were shown on the screen in the arena. Last but certainly not least was Deadpool, the murk with the mouth and just an overall awesome dude’ he was found eating a bunch of chimichangas and wearing a giant sombrero hat. Overall, a great mixture of interesting and fun celebrities (minus Nickelback) offered their presence in the finals. Code: 217 words 3: How would you quantify the success of the Raiders’ season this year? I’d say that we developed a lot better in the second half of the season which is great to see, as it shows that we absolutely have the talent to compete long-term, once our players get fully developed, they will be ripe to match the maturity of other players currently in the league. How would you evaluate the success of this season’s draft for the Raiders? I don’t see how it cannot be considered anything but an absolute homerun? FourFour did a tremendous job in getting some great value with his selections, especially when you look as to how the SHL Draft unfolded. I went 1st overall, and I was taken 2nd in the SMJHL Draft, Slm was drafted 9th overall in the SMJHL Draft but was drafted 3rd overall in the SHL Draft, and Ruutu was another top six selection in the SHL Draft as well. I’m also not factoring other actives that were drafted in the draft. What are your expectations for next season? To compete and make a run at the Four Star Cup, especially after the trade FourFour made to bring in Keenan. We will have many capped out prospects by the time the season rolls around, and I expect that to translate to many more victories than we had this past season. Task 1) Vancouver versus Kelowna was a mismatch on paper, but despite the sweep, the games were all close. This leads me to believe that Kelowna could have given Detroit a good run for their money. Kelowna actually won the season series against Detroit, and most of those games were close. So instead of losing in 4 games, I think the Knights would have won in a long, hard fought series against Detroit. That leads the other series to be Vancouver versus Prince George. Prince George won the series against Detroit in just 5 games, limiting the Falcons to just 3 goals in those 4 wins. This could mean they could handle the high flying Whalers offense. The season series between the two teams was a tight one, with Prince George winning the last game 3-1. Vancouver scored 19 goals in their four game sweep over Kelowna, so their offense was definitely on fire. I think PG would have made it tougher for Vancouver, pushing them to a game 7. However, the Whalers are just too skilled and would still advance. So if the matchups were different, both series would have been closer and longer, with Vancouver still moving on, but Kelowna would go from being swept to playing in the next round.
Task 2) Top 5 fan Bloopers: 1) In Vancouver, a man went to kiss his girl on kiss cam, but she kissed the other man next to her...ouch 2) In St.Louis, a man cheered after a goal, but knocked over his full beer. 3) In Vancouver, they were trying to do a wave, but one section was standing the entire time because they wanted free chips...bad timing. 4) In Vancouver, a man was walking back to his seat with a plate full of nachos, but tripped and fell and had the nacho cheese engulf his hair. Other than his dignity, he was alright. 5) In St.Louis, a little girl kept saying that each player was her favorite; not a true blooper, but pretty cute. Task 3) Shooter joined the Raiders mid-season, but couldn't help them get out of the basement and into the playoffs. We sat down with the scoring winger to ask about his team's season: Interview guy: Hello Shooter, thanks for taking the time to do this. Shooter McGavin: Hello, no problem. IG: So it was a rough season for Halifax, tell me what you saw? SM: Yeah it was a tough season. It just seemed like we couldn't get everyone going at the same time; we would get solid goaltending, but not score, then we would score a lot, but let in a bunch of goals. I guess that's part of being a young team. IG: You mention being a young team, does that allow for some optimism for next year's chances? SM: I think so. We are a hard working group of guys, and a lot of us should be entering our prime. I think you'll see a huge turnaround, and we'll be up on top of the standings next year. This year we scored the fewest amount of goals and allowed the most, but with the depth we have, and the core we can build around, we will definitely be one of the better teams...as long as we work hard. IG: Which returning player do you think will have a rebound year or will surprise the league? SM: I think Conor McGregor will take over for sure. I've seen his commitment to improving, and his training is crazy. He was extremely upset with last year's numbers (14 points), but I think you'll see him with a 20-20 (20 goals, 20 assists) season, as he is an all-around player with good play-making ability. IG: Finally, I'll ask about you and your expectation for next season. SM: Yeah, I was late to the game last year, and it definitely took me awhile to catch up to the rest of the league. That said, I'm pushing hard to make up for lost time and am expecting a much better year, especially since I got better down the stretch last season. I have a certain number I want to hit for goals, and it's above 20, but I also want to be a more reliable player in the d-zone, which is where I want to make my most improvement. Biggest thing is to just make the playoffs though. IG: Thanks shooter SM: Shoot ya later. Task #5 - Write a goals highlight play by play for one series winning game Requirements: At least 200 words for written / Game 4 in the Conference Semi-finals between Vancouver and Kelowna. Vancouver is up 3-0 in the series, and came back to force O.T. after trailing 5-2 in the game, and then magic happened to complete the comeback. "Poulin has the puck for Kelowna. He skates out of the zone...and passes the puck...it's intercepted by Picard! Jean-Luc Picard enters the zone and feeds Eri Arai. Arai drops the puck back to Stephens. He speeds in and loses the puck in the corner, but he's got along the boards. He goes down low to Tommy behind the net. He holds it, looking for an open man. Passes back to Stephens, back to Picard at the point. Picard finds Barlow behind the net again. Barlow passes it in front...Arai sneaks in and shoots!!!!!!!!!! Oh he just missed wide...Stephens retrieves the puck down low, the Whalers are dominating this shift! Stephens still with the puck behind the net...he tries a wraparound!!!... and....YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!! HE SCORES!!!!!!!!!!!! STEPHENS SCORES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE TUCKED IT IN UNDERNEATH BLACKFYRE'S PAD AND IN!!!!!!!!!!!!! HIS SECOND OF THE GAME HAS WON THE GAME AND THE SERIES FOR VANCOUVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A SHIFT, WHAT A GOAL, WHAT A COMEBACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This whole shift started with the turnover in the neutral zone, and once Vancouver entered the zone, they were the hungrier team and their skill shined through. The awareness of Arai to sneak in from the blue line for the first chance also played a big part, and you could tell the Knights were having issues setting up defensively. Then Stephens gets the puck, but he doesn't force a pass, instead he holds onto the puck and waits for something to get open. Nothing opens up and he just tries a wraparound...and I think he's as surprised as we are that it went in. What a night, but the fans here are devastated." ![]() Registered S18, S23, S27, S34, S37, S46 Challenge Cup Champion

Requirements: At least 200 words If the Kelown Knights had players from the Team Vancouver Whalers like Gabriel Wong, Tommy & Timmy Barlow, Joshua Woodcraft, Danny Mete, Karno Grönkjaer, Liam O'Callaghan, Ostap Maksimov and Julein O'Sullivan then I believe they had the chance to win the series and be very competive for Round 2 and the Four Star Cup Final. If an Team win the first four Games that means total domination and this sweep is always hard for the opponent. They must be strong and try all to make it better next season. The Vancouver Whalers also smashed the Colorado Mammoths after 5 games but then in the Finals it was very close! every game was close and in the end the St.Louis Scarecrows won the Four Star Cup. In my opinion to lose the final is way more harder than the first round of the playoffs. Because you are so close on this Cup and then you must see how others celebrate. Maybe the Kelowna Knigths will be more competive next season. Mostly in the SMJHL you has 2-3 really good season and then you are in a hole because its best if you contrate on 2-3 season. Then the percantage is higher to win a cup than always be an playoff team but never stacked. 213 words Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Jars must believe he can fly! Game 3 in finals a fan get a huge hit by an ref!!! An fan came on the ice and one of the refs thought ... dammit what he doing here! so he smashed him with an illegal hit! maybe the league will punish the ref for this illegal hit!!! After the second period we had the score one to one. In the first around seven minutes we don't saw a winner yet. Then some seconds later the St.Louis Scarecrows hero Logan Jensen marked the lead. DeMaricus Smyth and Seth Paige assisted him for this very important Goal. The Vancouver Whalers tried all after the lead for St.Louis. They took the goalie out of the net and they played with the empty net. All or nothing!!! But than the takeover. Jack Daniels passed to Paddy O'Sullivan and he made the Goal. Three to one was now the score and we had only thirtythree seconds at the clock. The St.Louis Scarecrows started a small party on the ice but the refs came to them and told them … „Guys you just have 33 seconds. After that you can make your party here in Vancouver.“ After this the coach reassured the team and they were focused on the Game. They brought the three to one lead over the time and finally started the party. Task #1 - How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less?
Requirements: At least 200 words The final three playoffs spots had 1 point separating them, so what would have happened if Kelowna had won a game against Detroit or Prince George that they had lost. Kelowna beating Prince George: For this one the opening round would change so instead of having an recap of the S38 finals, we get Kelowna and Detroit facing off against each other and Prince George facing off against Vancouver. In the Kelowna/Detroit match-up, it would probably be a close one, with Kelowna edging out Detroit in 7 games. For the Prince George/Vancouver match-up, it would probably be very close, with either team having a chance to win the series in 7 game, but I think you'd have to go with the home-team moving on. Next round you would most likely have St. Louis beating Kelowna and Vancouver beating Colorado again. So the finals wouldn't differ. Kelowna beating Detroit: For this recap of the S38 finals would not happen again, as the match-ups would be Vancouver/Detroit & Kelowna/Prince George. For the Kelowna/Prince George match-up, Prince George would move on, in 4/5 games, with the Firebirds completely dominating the Knights. As for the Vancouver/Detroit match-up, this would probably go to 7 games, with Vancouver most likely edging out the victory over Detroit. Now for the 2nd round, the match-ups would be the exact same as they happened in the current timeline. Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Top 5 goals, top 5 players, top 5 noteworthy people in the audience for one of the games, whatever you want. No word count, but if you just list 5 names, you won't get the full 2 tpe. Robert Phelps, related to Vancouver' current GM, Teddy Phelps, Robert Phelps has been seen cheering for his Whalers during the series. 2. Spitfire. How a pony got into the games, I don't know, but Vancouver Alum and current SMJHL commissioner, Spitfire was seen at all the games being partial in his rooting for the Whalers. 1. Wyatt Wolker, the future Hall of Famer, Wyatt Wolker was seen partaking in the festivities that take place during the SMJHL finals, dawning his former Whalers jersey. Richard Ficken: Hello ladies and gentleman, today I sit down with St. Louis Scarcrows' rookie winger, Jack Daniels. You and the Scarecrows are currently in the finals for the Four Star Cup in your rookie season, how does that feel? Jack Daniels: Pretty good, nice to experience the chance of winning in my first season, and it'll help out on my development. But I need to keep a level headed and not expect for a championship run every season. RF: Realistically, how do you see the finals playing out? JD: Glad you mentioned realistically, or else I'd say we'd win in 4 games, with each one being 10-0, with myself getting double hat tricks in 3 of the 4. But realistically, it's tough to say, I think we have a good enough team to win this, but don't think it'll be a sweep. Maybe 6 games, maybe 5, who knows. RF: Final question, the Scarecrows had a hard time against the Firebirds, how was the environment in the locker room like during that time? JD: It was tough, we knew we were the better team, but just couldn't finish out the series. Some of the players were getting frustrated but everyone kept a level head, and things got better when moved on. Liam O'Callaghan has the puck, and tries to move it up to Joshua Woodcroft, but DeMaricus Smyth is there to intercept the pass. He then tries to move the puck to Michael Fischer in the offensive zone, however Howie Dewitt thinks otherwise and picks it off. Facing pressure from Fischer, Dewitt sends the puck up to Gabriel Wong, but GOD McZehrl is there in the neutral zone, pick up the pass. The team's are playing hot potato with the puck, giving it to the other team like it's going to explode. McZehrl is able to drag the puck into the attacking zone. He keeps control of the puck, as the scarecrows are setting up. McZehrl sends the puck to Seth Paige, with it connecting, finally a player doesn't give the puck up. Paige now carries the puck, bellow the red line. He passes it behind himself to DeMaricus Smyth. Smyth puck handles the puck looking for an open player to send it to. Task #1 - How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less?
Considering that all players are capped in the SMJHL, I believe the teams there are all pretty evenly matched. Obviously, the more capped players you have, the better you should be but we all know how weird the sim engine is so I'm not sure if different matchups would've changed much. It's all about finding the right combinations with your lines (or should I say, the ones that gives you decent results the most often) and have a little luck. If there was a resim with the exact same teams and the same lines, I think the results could be different as well because of how much the engine relies on calculations that could go one way or the other. For the sake of the question, though, if we look at the stats, perhaps a matchup between the Kelowna Knights and the Detroit Falcons would've meant a different outcome for both teams, since their regular season matchup was pretty close with Kelowna winning 3 and Detroit 4. However, the Falcons scored more goals against Kelowna than the Knights did in their games against them so maybe it would have been even for both teams and that series would have gone further than the 4 and 5 games we got in the first round. How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less?
While I think that both round one series went the way people were expecting, it certainly is an interesting question of whether we would see the same teams in round two had the matchups been tweaked. I think that in some cases we would, or there would at least be the possibility of it. Playing the Prince George Firebirds round one was pretty much worst case scenario for the Detroit Falcons, who during the regular season could only muster one win against them in seven total games. They faired about equally well against their other two potential matchups, the Knights and the Whalers, winning about half of their games against each other. So I think had Detroit been matched up with anyone else in the first round, they definitely had a strong chance of making it to round two. I think the Knights would have struggled against any team, although their best chance would have lied in playing Detroit. They faired equally well against Prince George and Vancouver during the regular season, notching two wins against each. However, if they had to choose between the two they would definitely have stuck with playing Vancouver in the first round, as the Knight’s goal differential was minus fourteen versus the Firebirds, and only minus three versus the Whalers. I think that Prince George was the clear cream of the crop here, followed by Vancouver. While if the matchups were changed the teams that didn’t make the second round (Knights and Falcons) would have a much better chance of making it, I still think the two expected teams made it to the next round. While I’m not sure it would change who advanced, I do think that a matchup switch would’ve brought us some closer and more competitive hockey. 296 Words Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Top 5 goals, top 5 players, top 5 noteworthy people in the audience for one of the games, whatever you want. The Top Five Intermission Events of the Finals 0. Man Wrestles Bear - Game 2 First of all, we need to congratulate them for somehow getting this setup and taken down within the ten minutes allotted to them. This event made sure everyone stayed in the seats to watch the spectacle. While the bear eventually won out when the word “fidelio” was uttered, it was a sight to see, and I’m sure people will be talking about it for years to come. 0. Beyonce Wrestles Bear - Game 3 After St. Louis’ aforementioned event, Vancouver decided that it needed to up the ante. What is the only way to up the ante of someone wrestling a bear? Have Beyonce wrestle two bears. Surprisingly to nobody, Beyonce won, and secured her crown. Oh yeah, she also did this while singing. 0. Bear Wrestles Bear - Game 4 After the raging success of game three, Vancouver management decided that although they couldn’t step it up a notch any further after Beyonce, they should still run with it. So what did they do? Have a grizzly wrestle a black bear. Now because (as we know) bears can’t utter the safe word, instead it was decided that the safe word would be “rawr”. The match ended in about five seconds, as apparently the bears didn’t understand the english instructing them to only say the word when they were in trouble. Still a good matchup though. 0. Bear Wrestles Robot - Game 5 Still in Vancouver for this one (I think). The robot got destroyed, as it turns out they just tried to repurpose one of the Boston Dynamics ones that was only used to hold open doors. Such a shame. 0. Bear Wrestles Robot Bear - Game 6 St. Louis officially stole the show with this one. How they got such a high-tech bear robot in such short time is beyond me, but it was GD incredible. They not only won the series, but also my heart with this one. Task #3 - Either write an interview with your player about your team's playoff hopes (or if you're on an eliminated team, an interview about your team's season in review) OR create a program cover for one of the games in any playoff series. MM: Hello everybody, this is Mark Monsoon here coming to you live from Detroit. I am here today with Detroit Falcons left wing Reginald Rove, who is here to talk about his playoff hopes. Reginald, thanks for joining us. RR: Hey Mark, thanks for having me, pleasure to be here. MM: So for starters, what do you think Detroit’s chance in the playoffs this postseason is? RR: I think we have a good shot this season. We have a great group of guys, and we play hard every night on the ice. I think that could all result in some head turning games down the stretch. MM: What do you think your biggest weakness as a team at this point is? RR: We’ve definitely had a lot of trouble scoring the puck this season, and obviously coming into the postseason we need to rectify that if we want to have any chance. However, I think the guys are up to the challenge, and we’ll definitely be playing our hearts out. MM: Your first round matchup is with the Prince George Firebirds, what would you say about their team? RR: They are a really great team, and have pretty much dominated a lot of teams this season. I think the only way that we could beat them is by scoring early and often, and tightening up on defense. It will be an uphill battle for sure, but I think we are up to the task. They have so many scoring threats on their team that we have such a hard time defending them, but I know that with our chance at a championship on the line everyone will be willing to step it up and shut them down. MM: Well Reginald, thanks very much for joining us, and good luck to you and your team in the postseason. RR: Thanks very much, it was a pleasure to be here. Task #1 - If the match up for round one had been the Detroit Falcons vs the Halifax Raiders things may have gone differently for the Falcons. We dominated them in the regular season series 7-0 and outscored them 24-12. Taking on such a garbage team, the match up would have been heavily in our favor and would have surely resulted in a trip to the semi finals.
In a strange twist of fate, the Montreal Militia would be our match up in the semi finals. Another favorable match up for Detroit as we dominated the season series 5-2-1 outscoring the Militia slightly 23-20. It would have been another easy round victory over a garbage fire on ice team and sent Detroit on the path to the Finals to face some actual competition. With Detroit finally in the finals everything else wouldn't have mattered anyway. All the other teams in the league beat us in the regular season series. Detroit would have came up short winning the cup. It would have been a glorious run, maybe winning a game or two against the Whalers or someone. Task #1 - How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less?
Requirements: At least 200 words The first round postseason matchups I believe would have ended fairly similarly for all the teams involved even if the games had been switched. A Whalers versus Falcons matchup would have produced similar results when compared to the original matchup. The Vancouver Whaler’s offensive power was just too much to be stopped in the early rounds. Players like Gabriel Wong and Joshua Woodcroft were simply putting up too many points. While the Detroit Falcons on the other hand suffered from lack of overall scoring and poor special teams. I believe that the Vancouver Whalers would have taken this series in four short games. Similar to the first fictional matchup, a Kelowna Knights and Prince George Firebirds would have ended much the same. Prince George’s top line of Paddy Kane-Reilly, Kolja Sappanen, and Kyler Gill are just too much to be stopped and would have easily outmatched pretty much any line that the Knights would have put on the ice against them. However this series may have lasted longer as that the Kelowna Knights might have been able to put the puck in the net. Although I again predict a Firebirds win, I do believe that it would have ended in a four to three advantage for the Firebirds. It is hard to say what might have happened in the next round with the Mammoths and Scarecrows with reservse matchups, however the end result would still have proven interesting and continued the great SMJHL playoffs traditions. about 245 words Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Task #1 - How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less?
Requirements: At least 200 words Code: 241 words It is obvious from the way the Whalers crushed the Knights that there would have been no stopping the Whalers no matter who they were going to face in the first round. They came in with so much fire, so much energy and had so much effort that only the brave would have even won one game against them in the first round. When it comes to the Firebirds vs Falcons matchup, it is obvious that there is nothing that would have saved the Falcons from getting crushed by the Firebirds. While a 4-1 series win isn't quite as impressive as a 4-0 sweep, it is quite clear that the Falcons really never stood a chance after game 1. What would have most likely have been a game 7 triple OT heartstopper was never actually materialized as the Firebirds and Whalers did not face each other. The teams, from the looks of the first round matchups, were so evenly skilled and powerful that it surely would have taken OT in all 7 games to determine the winner. All in all, it definitely seems like the outcomes could have been different and way more exciting, as opposed to the straight up executions we witnessed. The conference finals will surely be more exciting and its going to be a very fun to be a hockey fan in the coming weeks as its only going to get tighter and tighter as the playoffs progress. O'Callaghan put up 13 points in 15 games as a defenseman and he would have been a consideration for MVP of the playoffs had his team won the cup! 3. Joakim Lindqvist Lindqvist only had 3 goals in the playoffs but he still managed to squeak in a game winning goal! Lindqvist also dominated on the dot with a 58.7% faceoff percentage! He only came second to Markus Meliodas, who had a staggering 65.77% faceoff percentage but Meliodas only played 5 games to Lindqvist's 13. 4. Tommy Tuck Tommy Tuck tried his best to get his team to gold, but it wasn't enough to have good goaltending to get the Firebirds to a cup. Tuck had a 0.918SV% and a 2.34 GAA, topping both charts among all goalies in the playoffs! 5. Task #1 -
While a 7 game series is a decent sample size and about as long as is feasible, I'm still of the opinion that just about anything can happen. In reality, we saw the Whalers sweep the Knights and the Firebirds take out the Falcons in 5 games. However, it's not like the winners were completely dominating each individual game of the series. Each of them only won by a single goal in 3 of their 4 wins; things easily could've gone in a different direction. Ultimately, I would expect the Firebirds and Whalers to advance still. However, if my Mammoths had been able to face the Firebirds, we certainly could've put up a fight for moving on to the finals. PGF certainly has a scary first line, but I think our depth would've knocked them out of the sky. Meanwhile, as the Scarecrows took down the Whalers in the finals, maybe they would've done the same in the semis. The more interesting scenario would occur if we allowed the Firebirds and Whalers to face off in round 1. If the Firebirds managed to take them down to then face the Mammoths in round 2, things could have turned out very differently for us. With how closely packed those seeds 3 through 6 were during the regular season, I don't think any of them were clearly more dominant than any other. So despite the actual dominating performances that happened, something as simple as changing matchups could have completely changed the remaining playoff rounds. Task #2 - Top 5 things done by St. Louis to prepare for defeating Vancouver 1. Read Moby Dick. St. Louis needed to learn how to defeat Whalers, and the tragic tale of captain Ahab was a good place to start 2. Watch most of Batman Begins. They learned from their villainous counterpart but turned it off early before he was defeated 3. Watch Free Willy. Learning how to help whales escape from captivity also seems like a useful skillset 4. Join the IWC. Wait whaling is illegal in most of the world? WTF Vancouver, you guys are sick. Anyways St. Louis is clearly a leading proponent of shutting down this most heinous of crimes within the international whaling commission. 5. Scare some crows. You know, just to get into the spirit of things. They probably played some hockey too but these all seemed more interesting. Task #3 Interviewer: Thanks for taking the time to sit down with us today Mr. Goat-Z. What are your hopes and dreams for the Mammoths during the playoffs? Goat-Z: First, my dad is Mr. Goat-Z; you can just call me Goat-Z. Second, after our incredible run during the season eventually culminating in a second place finish behind the scary Scarecrows, I would certainly expect to match up with them in the finals and give them a run for their money. Of course this didn't quite work out, as the Whalers had a whale of a time in advancing to the finals. I: Alright Goat-Z, and what did you expect out of yourself for an individual performance? GZ: My focus is on the team Interviewer, if that is your real name. However, after a surprisingly strong rookie campaign, I certainly hoped to perform well and contribute to the team as much as possible. Only scoring once in the series, during what turned out to be the final game, was a bit disappointing. I'll try to turn it into motivation to improve next season. I: Finally, now that Colorado has been kicked to the curb, how do you feel about that series with Vancouver? GZ: Obviously, I wish we could've pulled it off. On the other hand, I'm still really proud of this team. Other than that rough loss in game 3, we were within a single goal in the other 3 losses. If a little luck had gone our way with a puck finding the back of the net, we could've easily snuck another win in to extend the series. An extended series could only have helped us with our depth and teamwork, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Next season should see us back in the playoffs and stronger than ever, so I'll talk to you again in a year with some better results Mr. Interviewer! ![]() Registered Member
Task #1 - How would round 1 have gone down if the team matchups had been different? Which teams would be advancing to round 2? Would it have been more evenly matched? Less?
The first round of the SMJHL playoffs lasted a whopping 9 games between the two series. The Vancouver Whalers beat the Kelowna Knights in 4 games. The Prince George Firebirds toppled the Detroit Falcons in 5. They finished on a 4 game winning streak after dropping the first game. Surprisingly, apart from game two in both series (5-1 Whalers, 3-0 Firebirds), and game 1 between the Falcons and Firebirds (3-1 Falcons), all the games were decided by a single goal. I take this to mean that the teams were closer in skill level than the series outcomes show. If the match-ups had been reversed, with the Whalers playing the Falcons and the Firebirds taking on the Knights, I truly believe anything could have happened. All it takes to change the outcome of a hockey game, or a playoff series or even an entire season is the right bounce and momentum, or on the reverse token, the wrong bounce and/or injury. Most likely however the results would have been the same. The Firebirds lost to the eventual champions in the following round in a 7 game series, and the Whalers made quick work of an extremely strong mammoths team in the following round. Task #2 - Make a top 5 list for the finals. Top 5 goals, top 5 players, top 5 noteworthy people in the audience for one of the games, whatever you want. No word count, but if you just list 5 names, you won't get the full 2 tpe. Be a little creative. Top 5 worst fans of the SMJHL playoffs: 5. The Wazzu popcorn guy has moved to Canada! Recently spotted at the Kelowna Knights game, popcorn guy was still just as drunk, and still pouring popcorn everywhere. Some things never change. 4. The fan that took "Firebirds" a little too seriously and lit the team mascot torch on fire. Thankfully we've been told he will make a full recovery. 3. Kim Jong Un sporting an Eri Arai jersey at game 3 of the Vancouver Whalers first round series. Ouch. 2. The Scarecrow fan that came dressed as Scarecrow from Batman Begins. Turns out he was more in character than anyone thought as he tried to set off a gas canister in his section. Thank you to the fine members of St. Louis security and the men and women in blue who put a stop to his delusional plan. 1. The Vancouver Whalers fan with the homemade thong that said "Whale tails for Whalers". A 400 lb. male in a thong is something nobody should ever have to witness. (Coincidentally, this individual was also wearing an Arai jersey, or more accurately a quilt of Arai jerseys) Task #3 - Either write an interview with your player about your team's playoff hopes (or if you're on an eliminated team, an interview about your team's season in review) OR create a program cover for one of the games in any playoff series. Requirements: Written option - At least 200 words. Graphic option - Logos of both teams in the matchup and at least one player render. “Hello, I’m Irepor Ton Crap and we are back again with Colorado Mammoths rookie Blaine McElroy. Or I guess now that the season is over, you aren’t really a rookie anymore are you?†Blaine: “I guess technically I’m not. At least not in the SMJHL, but I am hoping to get drafted in the upcoming SHL draft which would make me a rookie of sorts in whatever organization drafts me. And still, I’ve only played one season in the SMJHL. There is so much more to learn and some really talented and experienced players on my team to learn from.†Irepor: “How would you rate your first season with the Mammoths? Are you happy with how your team did and with your individual performance?†Blaine: “I think this season was a great one. Obviously we wanted to win it all, and we are all disappointed about that, but we still had one heck of a season. We captured a first round bye going into the playoffs. As for my own individual performance, I thought there was room for me to do more, and I didn’t get it done. Heading into this offseason I am really going to focus on my development as a player. I think I can be a huge asset to the team next season, and potentially play a large role on one of the top two D pairs as well as the power play.†Task #4 - Create a 4 Star Cup Championship banner similar to the one the SHL uses at the top of the site. Requirements: Must include a team logo and at least one player render. ![]() Task #5 - Write a goals highlight play by play for one series winning game OR make an infographic featuring stats from a series winning game. Requirements: At least 200 words for written / at least 4 stats featured in at least 2 different ways for graphics (bar graphs, pie graphs, list of names, etc) Tonight on Sports center, we are going to go in depth on Game 5 of the SMJHL Playoffs first round series between the Prince George Firebirds and the Detroit Falcons. Prince George lead the series entering tonight 3 games to 1. The first period of action saw some spectacular saves from our goalies, as well as a power play for each team, but no scoring. Let’s jump midway through the second and go straight to the play-by-play. “The Firebirds are on the power play here and are really hoping they can win this offensive zone faceoff. Kane-Reilly wins the faceoff cleanly back to Petrikov for Prince George and the Firebirds go to work. Petrikov passes to Gill, over to Seppänen, back to Kane-Reilly. Kane-Reilly loses control of the puck…but it’s picked up by Gill and the Firebirds retain possession. Gill passes to Petrikov and…..PETRIKOV SCORES!! It’s a 1 goal lead for the Firebirds just past 14 minutes into the second period.†“The Firebirds really seem to be in control of this game, despite only having a one goal lead. We have just passed the 17 minute mark in the second period. Niklas Mueller retrieves a loose puck in the neutral zone and is turning up ice. He tries to pass it but it’s intercepted by Jukka in the neutral zone. Jukka throws a pass to St. Raegan and the Scarecrows enter the zone in force. St. Raegan passes to Kolesnikovs who hits Victorsson on the back door….GOAL! Victorsson had a wide open net and that knots this game up at 1 apiece.†“Our game is still tied at 1 halfway through the third period. The Falcons are desperately trying to stay alive in this series. The next goal could decide their fate. Jukka dumps the puck into the Falcons’ zone and the Falcons get a change. Nylander picks up the puck for the Firebirds and makes the long pass to Gill in the neutral zone. Gill forwards it to Lokitonov who dumps the puck into the corner. The Firebirds get a change. The puck is retrieved by Primeau and the Falcons are looking to move up ice. Primeau makes the long pass to Huligans but it’s interecepted! Firebirds have the puck and…the Falcons have intercepted the pass and….the Firebirds have it back. What a display of poor passing by these two teams. Mueller with the puck now, passes to Christiansen. Christiansen skates the puck into the neutral zone….still carrying the puck into the offensive zone, he’s cut to the middle, he splits the D….HE SCORES!!! It’s a 2 – 1 lead for the Firebirds. If the Falcons can’t make a comeback their season will be over!†Unfortunately for the Falcons, there was no comeback to be made and the Firebirds advance to the second round! |
