S7 Epic Draft Class
#1

With the recent retiring and recreating of many SHL Veterans, this years S7 NWJHL Draft could be one to remember. This year's Draft is filled with talent, and lets take a closer look at some of the headliners this year:

D - Alexander Katchalov
Agent: NathanAD (Nathan D'Angelo)
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 200 lbs
Shoots: Right
Nationality: Ukrainian

Katchalov will easily be one of the most prized defenseman in this years NWJHL Draft. Katchalov's game is a distinctive blend between good defensive play and solid offensive play. Despite Katchalov's small frame, he is still able to throw his body around on a consistent basis, and is able to chip pucks away from oncoming attackers. Katchalov is also a good passer, which could make him a valuable asset as a quarterback on a powerplay.

NHL Comparison: Kimmo Timonen

D - Richard Metcalf-Kearns
Agent: Lazyeye (Richard Metcalf)
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 215 lbs
Shoots: Right
Nationality: Spanish

Metcalf-Kearns much like his predecessor in this article will be a highly valued defenseman coming in to this Draft. Despite Metcalf-Kearns' big, 6'5" 215 lb frame, he is not known for throwing punishing hits in his own zone, instead, he uses his big frame to win puck battles in the corners and dominate in and around the crease. Metcalf-Kearns is also a superb passer, and is known for making great outlet passes out of his own zone.

NHL Comparison: Adam Larsson

LW - Antero Salmelainen
Agent: Parise9 (Brandon Holmes)
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 215 lbs
Shoots: Left
Nationality: Finnish

Salmelainen is one of the more valued forwards in this Draft. Salmelainen is an all around offensive threat, as he has a wicked shot and is a great passer. Salmelainen also has great hands and can hang on to the puck in traffic. One other area where Salmelainen excels is his speed, as he is a great skater. The Finnish winger does struggle in his own defensive zone, however. He could be a liability out there if put in a defensive situation. Still though, this forward should pack enough punch to outweigh his defensive inability.

NHL Comparison: Thomas Vanek

C - Teemu Kimiciek
Agent: hillsyftw1 (Luke Valentine)
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 210 lbs
Shoots: Right
Nationality: Finnish

Kimiciek will be another player in this draft that will be prized for his offensive play. Kimiciek is more noted for his goal-scoring ability than his playmaking abilities. Kimiciek has a great shot, much like his fellow countryman Salmelainen, and has great hands as well which will make it very difficult to get him off of the puck. Kimiciek is also a good skater, so his speed is something that should be noted about his game. Kimiciek is also a player that is weak in his own zone, however. Kimiciek is another player that will be a liability for some coaches in the wrong situation, but he has enough firepower to score more goals than he causes.

NHL Comparison: Steven Stamkos

C - Augustus Anthony
Agent: Seth (Seth Plaut)
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 235 lbs
Shoots: Right
Nationality: Italian

Anthony is another center whose game is highlighted by his offensive ability. Anthony is an excellent passer, which will make him a highly valued #1 center to place next to a scoring winger. One other area where Anthony excels is his skating ability. Anthony uses his tremendous skating ability to get around defenders to create scoring opportunities. Anthony is also a prize for his abilities in the faceoff dot, which seems to have become a lost art. Anthony is also another forward who is weak in his own end, so beware to whichever team decides to draft him.

NHL Comparison: Nicklas Backstrom

C - Sam Slade
Agent: Heater (Dravius Thayden)
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 195 lbs
Shoots: Right
Nationality: Canadian

Slade is another player prized for his stellar offensive play. Slade has a rocket for a shot which could make him become a scoring machine. Slade also has very good hands and can get around defenders with slick dekes. Slade should also be noted for his quickness on his skates. All of these things should make Slade a force to be reckoned with in the offensive zone, but in his own zone is where Slade struggles the most. Despite defensive ineptness, Slade should be a valued forward because of his strong offensive play.

NHL Comparison: Jeff Carter

RW - Marek Jurco
Agent: hockey98 (Tomas Jurco)
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 193 lbs
Shoots: Left
Nationality: Czech

Jurco's game can be summed up as a solid Two-way presence. Jurco has the ability to put the puck in the net on a regular basis. Not only that, Jurco will definitely be one of the best skaters in this year's NWJHL Draft. Jurco tends to try to break past defenders using his speed rather than deking. Jurco is a good offensive player for sure, but he is also quite good in his own defensive zone, which will make him a very valuable player for a team's Penalty Kill. Jurco is a player that has the potential to challenge for the Brandon Holmes Trophy for Top Defensive Forward this coming season, which is something that will draw many teams to him.

NHL Comparison: Mike Richards

All of these players are great candidates for the 1st Overall Pick, but who will emerge as that coveted #1 will be something that can only be told through time. The S7 NWJHL Draft will be an interesting Draft to see for sure.

Like the article, perhaps you could include the NWJHL re-creates that should be among the SHL Veterans for 1st round honors?

Just an idea to expand on your article and give me and others more exposure Smile
