SHL Elite Eight Week 1

Week 1 Power Rankings

For many of us (or at least myself) the power rankings tab on the sim was just another interesting thing to look at, but didn’t really mean a heck of a lot. It changes significantly with each sim as goal differential is weighed heavily upon and, only looking at the last 10 games played, the win/loss can swing dramatically as well. In any event I thought it would be fun to do an SHL Elite 8, similar to the NHL Super 16 that is published weekly on nhl.com. For those unfamiliar with the power rankings, the sim awards 3 points for a win, 1 point for an overtime loss, 1 point for a shootout lose and 1 point per positive goal differential. This time around I literally just took the rankings shown here and added some fluff. Next time around I may try to go outside the 10 game window or put less weight in to goal differential.</div>

1. West Kendall Platoon Platoon
Power score: 36
Previous week rank: n/a.
Hit: 8-2 in their last 10 and +13, they’ve totally rebounded from a dreadful pre-season and now lead the league after 13 games played.
Miss: Not much. Long time Platoon defender Klaus Wagner has been lackluster with only 2 points, but honestly the rest of the bunch more than make up for it.

2. Texas Renegades Renegades
Power score: 30
Previous week rank: n/a.
Hit: Also 8-2 in their last 10 they’ve surprised a lot of folks as they currently sit #1 in the west. They’re western conference leading 49 goals for is a big reason why.
Miss: With 48 goals against through 13 games they have the 2nd worst goals against in the league and the worst in the west.

3. Hamilton Steelhawks Steelhawks
Power score: 27
Previous week rank: n/a.
Hit: 6-2-2 in their last 10 and a healthy +8 goal differential things look pretty swell for Hamilton. Draft darlings Odjick and Phelps have been fantastic through the first 12 games, with 16 and 15 points respectively as they lead the Steelhawks.
Miss: Not much. 2 of those losses were at the hand of the Buffalo Stampede, a team which has struggled to start the season, but with 4 more games against the eastern opponent it’s hard to say if it’s a trend.

4. Winnipeg Jets Jets
Power score: 25
Previous week rank: n/a.
Hit: They kicked off their last 10 games with a 5 game win streak, capped off by a convincing 7-1 win against the Seattle Riot.
Miss: They proceeded to lose 4 straight until their most recent win against the Panthers. Out of character for the talented Winnipeg club, even with the small sample size.

5. Manhattan Rage Rage
Power score: 21
Previous week rank: n/a.
Hit: 5-2-3 in their last 10 and hovering just above positive with a +3 goal differential, the Rage have hung around so far this season. A big reason why is their special teams as they currently possess the #1 powerplay and #5 penalty kill league wide.
Miss: Top scorer Luke Atmey is shooting at a lowly 3.85% so far this season. His passing game has kept him in elite territory, but he’ll need to start putting the puck in the net if Manhattan hopes to improve on their current -6 goal differential.

6. Minnesota Chiefs Chiefs
Power score: 21
Previous week rank: n/a.
Hit: Going in to next sim the Chiefs have the #1 faceoff win percentage in the league. They also have the #2 powerplay as they’ve converted on over 42% of their opportunities.
Miss: With 4 shootout losses in their last 10 games the Chiefs have run in to a bit of bad luck. Fortunately they still scrap out a pity point to keep them at #2 in the eastern conference standings.

7. Edmonton Blizzard Blizzard
Power score: 20
Previous week rank: n/a.
Hit: With a goal differential of +15 they boast the best differential in the west by a significant margin. Next closest is Calgary with +3. Toss in a league leading fewest goals against the Blizzard seem to have it figured out defensively.
Miss: Despite outscoring their opponents the Blizzard struggle to win the close games having lost 4 of their last 10 in regulation by 1 goal.

8. Calgary Dragons Dragons
Power score: 17
Previous week rank: n/a.
Hit: Calgary has held their opponents to just over 27 shots a game, the best in the league so far this season. As a result they’ve kept their opponents off the scoreboard, allowing only 31 goals against, #2 in the west and league wide.
Miss: After a fantastic pre-season, the Dragons offense has struggled to score as their 34 goals for is the worst amongst teams in a playoff seed and #11 overall in the league.

Fell out of the Elite 8 this week: n/a.

Missed the Elite 8 this week: New England Wolfpack, San Francisco Pride, Los Angeles Panthers, Toronto North Stars, Buffalo Stampede and the Seattle Riot.
