The SHL Playoff race
#1

The playoff race in the SHL continues to be a closely contested fight. The East has no run away team. Between first and 4th the standings can change drastically with about 10 games left. The West seems like more of a two team race.
THE EAST
Hamilton has 10 games left this season, 3 are against a conference playoff team. 2 more games are against Western Conference playoff teams. That’s 5 games against teams that will not, or have a high chance of not being a playoff team. Those are games they should win and get an extra 10 points.

New England are in a different situation. They have 5 playoff teams as well but 3 of those are against conference playoff teams. The other 2 playoff teams are the two top teams in the west. Those games will be intense games, hard fought and draining. they are also the next two games on their schedule. 2 more are against West Kendall, a team with the same number of points as them. New England also have Manhattan who ar also in a playoff fight trying to catch up to the pack. Being only 4 points back of the last playoff spot, this may be a fight New England may not want.

West Kendall have 4 playoff teams left on their Schedule. Besides the two games against New England, West Kendal also have Edmonton (playoff team in the west), and Minnesota, who is holding the last spot in the east.

The defending Champs have a hard road ahead. Minnesota has two games against Hamilton who is first in the east. They also have West Kendall. However the real test is the two games against Manhattan, a team four points back for the last playoff spot.

With Manhattan sitting in 5th and four points back of Minnesota, there is a chance the defending champs miss the dance this season. Toronto sit 8 points back with 9 games to go. A long shot to make the playoffs, there is still an outside chance, a small outside chance.

THE WEST
The West has become a two team race. A two team race with the participants being anything but amicable. The Texas / Winnipeg rivalry took a new level this week when both teams took to the media and fired shots at each other. However at the moment Winnipeg sit 3 points back with a game in hand.

Texas started the season 1-3 before their 10 game winning streak and 15 wins in 16 games leading them to first overall, which is where they have sat for almost the whole season. The final 8 games see them go up against six playoff teams. Calgary three times, New England once and two of the last three games against their current death rivals, Winnipeg.

Winnipeg has 9 games to go and sit three points back of first overall. They have 5 games against playoff teams and only 1 of those against an eastern playoff team. They also have two against Calgary and two against Texas, Including the last of the season which may decide who wins first overall.

Calgary sit comfortably in 3rd with a 5point lead over 4th place. the down side is only three of their remaining 10 are non playoff teams. Calgary has Winnipeg twice, Texas three times and plays 4th place Edmonton once .

Edmonton sits in fourth but have Los Angeles snipping at their heels. Both have 9 games left and are separated by two points.
The Edmonton advantage is they have 3 playoff teams left on their schedule. Three games against Seattle and three against San Francisco.

Los Angeles sit two points back of the final spot. This will probably go down to the wire. San Francisco are 5 points back and still have a decent shot but they will have to leap two teams to get in and that may be to much to over come.

Honorable mention.

East
Manhattan sit four points back. 5 playoff team games left on their schedule. It may be a dog fight to get in to the playoffs but if they can stay point for point with Minnesota and beat them in their two games, we may witness an amazing feat.

WEST
Los Angeles sit just 2 points back of fourth in the West. They have five games left against non playoff or bubble teams and will be in the fight probably until the last game of the season.

Would be embarrassing if we end up giving that last spot up in the home stretch, especially as defending cup champs.
